Xavier:
I eyed the man in the center of the path. His jaw was clenched and his lips twisted into a sneer. I could feel negative intentions radiating from him.
“What is our plan of action, Alpha Xavier,” Riley asked, not taking his eyes off of the man before us.
“See how willing he is to cooperate with us before starting a fight. Violence is our last option.”
Riley pulled the microphone from the center console that was connected to the speaker mounted on the top of the van. “Step aside, so we can pass peacefully.”
The man gave us a mischievous look. “You have something of mine. Now give it back.” The man took a step forward.
“Stay right there. What is it that you want?”
“The kid in your possession. I Have business with him.”
I could hear Zarik gasp. “Alpha Xavier, that’s one of the Sivika’s men.” His voice was a soft whisper, but there was no mistaking his words.
“How certain are you?”
“The patch on his arm. That’s the crest of their clan.”
I focused in on the green piece of fabric stitches to the sleeve of his jacket. There was a gold snake in the shape of an S. Two arrows crossed behind the snake with half a sun on each side.
“Why would they want you, Zarik?”
“No one can steal from them and get away with it. They’ve hunted people for less than that.”
I nodded. This man was just there lap dog, following orders. The sooner I got rid of him, the sooner we could continue our journey. He appeared to be alone. It wouldn’t take much.
The man on the path let out an annoyed groan. “If you don’t hand him over, then I’m taking him!”
“What do we do now, Alpha Xavier,” Riley asked.
“Nothing. I can handle this alone.” I opened the door and went to slide out when someone grabbed my hand. I turned to find Alpha’s green eyes filled with worry.
“I will go with you.” The concern in her eyes gave me a warm feeling inside my chest. She was always pushing me away, now she looked like she didn’t want to see me go. I wanted to lean in to give her a reassuring kiss, but I’m sure I’d receive a slap in the face.
I put on the cocky grin she seemed to roll her eyes at often. “I can handle a single rogue on my own.” I turned to leave, then paused to say, “Everyone stay here, unless ordered otherwise.”
I didn’t want anyone becoming collateral damage. Rouges could be savage. They wouldn’t hesitate to use someone else against me. They fought dirty any chance they got. Rogues loved a low blow. You never saw it coming, and by the time you did, it would be to late.
I gave Alpha’s hand a quick squeeze before exiting the vehicle and closed the door.
I could handle any rogue, even several at once. There was no fear within me, but Alpha’s touch and concern seemed to give me a deeper sense of courage than I’ve ever had before.
I eyed the rogue up and down. He had taken a defensive pose, expecting me to attack.
“Hand the kid over, and I won’t hurt that little red-head. I could snap her pretty neck like a twig,” he warned, with a sadistic chuckle.
I was tempted to turn and see the annoyed expression on Alpha’s face, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. One hint of weakness and he’d pounce like a feral beast.
“If you want him, then you’ll have to go through me.”
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” He leaped at me before he finished his sentence.
I dodged his attack with little effort. He was fast, but no one could compare to my speed.
He composed himself and bolted towards me again. His fist flew in all directions, but I countered every one.
He growled at his lack of success and attempted to swipe my feet from under me with a smooth kick. I jumped and gave him a kick in the center of his chest. It sent him flying back and he landed on the ground with a thud.
I leaned over him and took hold of his throat, just tight enough to hold him down, but loose enough so he could speak.“Where is the Sivika’s Den?”
Before he answered a scream rang out from behind me. I looked to find three other rogues attacking the van. Luckily it was armored and the glass was bulletproof.
I gave him a hard punch to knock him out before taking care of the other rogues. I pulled one off from the top of the van. His fist flew at me, but missed. His speed seemed to be more impressive than the other guy, but lacked strength.
I could see the other two heading towards us. I lead them further away from the van.
The two came at me full force. One threw a kick. I grabbed his foot and threw him into the other.
I was propelled forward by a kick in the back. I elbowed him in the rib and he backed off.
The two scrambled off of the ground and headed towards me again. I could see two more running in our direction from the forest. I was surrounded.
What the f*ck? Where did all of these rogues come from? Then it dawned on me. The first man was a decoy. I was so focused on fighting him that I hadn’t heard the other rogues approaching.
I could see the first man had regained consciousness. The man I had elbowed recovered and was joining the rest of them. I was surrounded. It was time to change into my wolf form.
I had just transformed when a loud growl echoed throughout the forest. We all looked up to see a flash of red hair and blazing green eyes hurling towards us.
Alpha:
I knew Xavier was gong to be pissed that I disregarded his command, but I couldn’t stand back and watch. He was surrounded by six wolves. I was already nervous when it was just one.
I knew he could handle himself, but a part of me was scared that he could be hurt, or worse, killed. I never felt scared of anything, but the idea of not seeing him again left an unsettling feeling in my stomach.
Despite our rocky start, I could feel my heart being pulled towards Xavier. My wolf would never forgive me if I let our mate be killed in front of our eyes.
The second I saw the last two rogues come out of the forest I couldn’t stop myself from taking charge. I unbuckled my seat and headed straight for the sunroof.
“What do you think you’re doing, Alpha,” Strauss asked with widened eyes. “It’s too dangerous for you. Xavier fights rogues all the time. He can handle himself.”
I gave him a determined smirk. “So can I.” I gave him a wink. “Don’t wait up.”
“Alpha!” He yelled, trying to stop me, but I had already unlocked the sunroof and slipped out.
I jumped from the roof and landing just before the hoard of rogues that surrounded Xavier.
I didn’t hesitate to jump on the closest one to me. I stuck my thumbs in his eyes till he yelled in pain. I dropped him to the ground and gave him a couple of kicks to the stomach, causing him to spit blood. I twisted his neck till it snapped.
One of the rogues attacked me from behind, wrapping his arms around me. I stomped on his foot and elbowed him in the stomach, before flipping him to the ground. He was the man that was demanding that we give Zarik over. I was looking forward to ending him, but another man grabbed my foot before I could finish him off
I was being dragged across the ground. I glanced around and spotted a rock the size of a softball. I threw it as hard as I could at his head. It hit dead center, causing him to fall to the ground with blood oozing from his cranium.
I glanced around to see how many rogues were left. I noticed Xavier hadn’t move from his spot between the rogues. All eyes were on me. “Are you going to help or just stand there?”
My words seemed to snap Xavier out of it and he bit into the leg of the man on his right. A large piece of flesh was ripped from him, causing him to fall to the ground and scream hysterically. Xavier put an end to that by ripping his throat out with his claws.
Two of the remaining rogues shifted to their wolves. One attacked Xavier, while the other focused on me.
We circled one another until he lunged towards me. I dodged him and grabbed his tail before he could turn around. I pulled it hard till he yelped and flung him into a tree. The tree snapped in half, falling down onto him.
Now that he was securely in place I mounted him and wrapped my arms around his throat till his breathing ceased.
I looked over to see that Xavier was finishing tearing the other wolf into pieces.
“You’re tougher than you look, Sweetheart.” It was the same man who thought I was an easy target. He was about to regret his words.
I didn’t hesitate to punched him in the mouth, causing a crunch. He looked surprised by my force and gripped his broken jaw. I took the opportunity to knee him in the groin. He fell to the ground with a thud. “I bet your pretty neck snaps like a twig.” I gave him a deranged smile with eyes full of crazy before twisting his neck till it cracked, causing the look of horror on his face to slump motionless.
I looked around at the lifeless bodies surrounding me. I didn’t know who the Sivika Clan was or how the kid was tied into them, but it seemed Zarik must know something that the Sivika’s didn’t want leaking out. They willingly let their own men get slaughtered and it was obvious that they would kill anyone in their path to get to Zarik
I could hear rustling. I looked to find Xavier in his human form and completely naked. I was mesmerized by the bulging muscles that covered his abdomen, but I didn’t dare look any lower. The mate bond would have me aching with need if I did. Just the thought sent a warm feel through my center, then Xavier’s words doused the heat building inside me. “Alpha! What the f*ck do you think you were doing?”
I was taken aback. I just rescued him and he had the nerve to speak to me like this? I snapped my eyes up to match his glare. “Saving your ass!”
He lowered his brows and snarled. “I don’t need your help.”
“Oh, that’s right. You were completely surrounded by half a dozen rogues, itching for a fight,” I said sarcastically. “But, you’re right. You had everything under control.” I placed my hands on my hips and glowered at him.
“I told everyone to stay in the car!”
“I’m an Alpha. It’s my duty to protect those that are in my care.”
“I am the head Alpha here. These are my men from my pack. I don’t need your help. As a Luna it’s your job to sit and support me, not blaze through like a f*cking cannonball! Act like a damn lady for once!”
I huffed. “I’m not a helpless princess that needs a man to fight her battles. When I see trouble I run towards it. It’s in my blood! I was born for this!”
“You were born to be my Luna!”
I was speechless. Did he not see how easily I handled those rogues? Did he only see me as his Luna? Was that the only benefit he thought I offered to him?
I dropped my intense gaze and gave him a blank expression, raising my chin high. “If you think that’s all I was born to be, then you don’t understand me or my worth.”
I turned and headed to the car. I opened the door. “Scoot over!” Strauss didn’t hesitate to move to the center seat.
I gave Xavier a dirty look before climbing in and slamming the door.
I could hear the frustrated grinding of his teeth, but I didn’t care. He was a man blinded by his own ego. Until he puts that aside and sees me as an equal, we can never be mates.
Riley handed Xavier a t-shirt and shorts. After dressing, he cleared the broken tree from the path and placed the bodies in the woods, but not before ripping the arm patch off of one of the men’s jackets.
We continued our journey with everyone on high alert. The air was intense, not because of the tension between Xavier and I, but now that we knew the dangers lurking. We had to be more careful.
