The Rose Brooch

You slowly lift your gaze to meet his and the moment your eyes lock with his, everything around you seems to fade into silence. A pair of deep sapphire-blue eyes holds yours so effortlessly that you forget to breathe. The gentle evening breeze stirs his soft golden hair, while the warm glow of the lanterns paints his strikingly handsome face in golden light. For a fleeting moment, he looks less like an ordinary man and more like someone stepped out of an ancient tale. You find yourself completely lost in his gaze, unable to look away, as though an invisible thread has bound your souls together. Your heart begins to race wildly against your chest, and you cannot understand why this complete stranger feels so familiar. Then, suddenly, Bella's voice cuts through the silence. "Juli!" You blink in surprise, your trance instantly broken. Realising that you are still standing in the stranger's arms, your cheeks flush with embarrassment. You hurriedly step away, lowering your eyes as a wave of shyness washes over you. "Th-Thank you..." you whisper. The young man says nothing. Instead, he continues looking at you with quiet amusement, a faint, irresistible smile lingering upon his lips, as though your flustered innocence has captivated him. Unable to bear his gaze any longer, you quickly turn away and hurry after Bella. You continue wandering through the lively marketplace beside Bella, your curious eyes drinking in every wonderful sight before you. Beautiful wooden toys, tiny carved horses, painted dolls, and miniature castles fill the stalls, while delighted children laugh and play nearby, their innocent joy bringing an unexpected smile to your lips. A little farther ahead, another merchant proudly displays glittering gemstones, precious jewels, and corals of every imaginable colour, each one shimmering beneath the warm glow of countless lanterns. Your footsteps come to an abrupt halt as your gaze settles upon a collection of magnificent corals. Their brilliant crimson glow instantly reminds you of the Red Coral your mother took from you only moments ago. A faint sadness fills your heart, and your eyes slowly become moist. Without taking your eyes off the display, you softly whisper, "Bella... I want that coral." Bella follows your gaze before letting out a helpless sigh. "I believe you've forgotten something," "Tonight, you are not the Princess of Jejus. Those are royal corals. They are far too precious and expensive. Only nobles and members of the royal family can afford them... and I certainly do not possess that much gold." You remain silent for a moment before forcing a small smile. "It is all right," you reply quietly. "I was merely looking." You begin walking once more. Then, quite unexpectedly, your eyes fall upon a tiny stall tucked away beside the jeweller's shop. Resting upon a velvet cloth is a simple rose-shaped brooch. Unlike the sparkling jewels surrounding it, it is neither precious nor extravagant, yet something about its delicate craftsmanship captures your heart at once. Almost without thinking, you stop before the stall, gently lift the little rose brooch into your hands, and admire it with quiet fascination, unable to understand why such an ordinary trinket feels so special to you. You turn towards the shopkeeper and speak softly, “Excuse me, Miss… could you please give this to us? We have no money.” The shopkeeper looks you up and down with a strange, doubtful gaze, as though she cannot comprehend why you dare to ask her for something without a single coin in your possession. She folds her arms and replies coldly, “No, child. Why should I give it to thee? I neither know thee nor have I any reason to suffer a loss for thy sake.” You swallow your embarrassment and plead once more, “Please, Miss. I shall send the pounds to you later. I promise.” Yet the woman’s expression only grows harsher. “How many times must I tell you? If you hast no money to pay, then leave this place! Why do you come here when you cannot even afford to buy what you want?” Her cruel words make you lower your gaze, and for a moment you know not what to say. Suddenly, before the shopkeeper, a small pouch falls upon the ground with a soft thud. You stare at it in surprise, then slowly look beside you, only to discover a strange man standing there. He appears calm and composed amidst the commotion of the marketplace, He speaks to the shopkeeper, “Take this as the price of the brooch, and let it serve as you lesson. Henceforth, before you speakest so harshly to another, remember this: whatever their status may be, they are still a human being.” The shopkeeper immediately lowers her eyes, her pride seemingly humbled by his words. After a brief silence, she turns towards you and says, “Forgive me. You must take it.” A bright smile immediately touches your face, and with childlike happiness, you take the brooch into your hands, holding it carefully as though it is something precious. You then turn towards the stranger, your eyes filled with gratitude, and say innocently, “Thank you… thank you so very much. You are truly very kind.” The man regards you quietly before answering, “You are very sweet.” His words make you pause, and without quite understanding why, you find yourself looking into his eyes. You then remember the pouch of pounds and immediately speak, “We shall return you pounds very soon. We promise.” He gently shakes his head and says, “There is no need for that. You have received this, and that alone is enough.” You look at him with curiosity, unable to understand why a stranger would be so generous towards you. “By the way… who are you?” He gives a faint smile and replies, “My name is Romeo. I work here.” You nod politely, your expression still warm with gratitude. “It is very nice to meet you, Romeo. We shall take our leave now.” You turn around, preparing to depart, but after taking only a few steps, you suddenly stop. Something feels terribly wrong. You look around and realise that Bella is nowhere beside you. Your brows draw together in confusion as you call softly, “Bella?” You glance to one side, then the other, searching between the stalls and among the hurried crowd, but there is no sign of Bella anywhere. Your heart begins to pound as you wonder where she could have gone. Before you can search any further, a loud, commanding voice suddenly echoes through the marketplace. “Make way! His majesty is coming!” Within moments, the peaceful marketplace turns into complete chaos. People begin rushing in every direction, hurriedly gathering their belongings and disappearing into the narrow streets. “Hurry! His majesty is coming!” Your hands and feet begin to tremble. You instinctively start running with the crowd, clutching the brooch tightly against your chest as you struggle to keep your balance. You take another hurried step when suddenly your foot strikes a brass vessel lying on the ground. A sharp pain shoots through your foot. You stumble and gasp, nearly falling to the ground. Looking down, you see blood beginning to stain your foot. Tears instantly fill your eyes, and your lips tremble as you try to hold them back. You try to move forward through the chaos of the marketplace and the constant pushing of the crowd. People are rushing in every direction, desperately trying to clear the path for the royal procession. Your injured foot hurts so badly that every step feels almost impossible, yet you continue trying to find Bella. Suddenly, someone grabs your hand from within the crowd and pulls you towards him. Before you can even understand what is happening, you find yourself inside a small shop. You look up in surprise and see Romeo standing before you. He speaks softly, “Stay here. The royal procession is about to pass through. It is not safe to go outside right now.” Tears fill your eyes as you say anxiously, “My friend Bella… I don't know where she has gone. I can't find her anywhere.” Romeo reassures you, “You will find her. Don't worry.” With that, he kneels down in front of you and carefully takes your hand, guiding you towards a nearby chair. You look at him in confusion, “What are you doing?” Romeo doesn't answer. Instead, he gently lifts your injured foot into his hands and supports it so he can examine the wound properly. A little blood is still coming from your foot. He looks at the injury with concern and carefully touches it to see how badly it is hurt. The moment his fingers apply a little pressure, a soft gasp of pain escapes your lips. Romeo immediately looks up at you and asks, “Does it hurt badly?” You remain silent for a few moments before slowly looking at him and asking, “Why are you helping me so much?” At your question, Romeo simply looks at you for a few moments. You continue gazing into his eyes, unable to look away. To Be Continue...
