Beyond The Palace
You're POV
( Juliet )
The golden rays of the setting sun slowly fade into the evening sky as the first stars begin to appear. The entire Kingdom of Jejus glows beneath thousands of lanterns and colorful decorations.
Outside the palace, preparations for the annual royal festival are in full swing. The sound of beating drums, enchanting music, and the joyful laughter of the people drifts through the air, reaching even the palace walls. But, you are not a part of that happiness.
You stand alone on the highest balcony of the palace. The cool evening breeze gently caresses your long golden hair as your tear-filled eyes remain fixed upon the endless sky. Bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun and flickering torches, the palace's white marble walls look no less than a paradise.
Another tear quietly rolls down your cheek, Yet you make no attempt to wipe it away. To everyone else, this palace is a symbol of wealth, glory, and magnificence. Its golden corridors, countless servants, glittering chandeliers, and endless luxuries make it seem like the most beautiful place in the world.
But to you, it is nothing more than a gilded cage. A prison where every breath feels suffocating.
You are the Princess of the Kingdom of Jejus, yet you have been deprived of happiness all your life. Since the day you were born, your cruel parents have kept you confined within these palace walls. You have never been allowed to step outside. You have never walked through the kingdom's streets, wandered its bustling marketplaces, or witnessed its grand festivals.
The world beyond the palace. Exists only in the stories you have heard and the dreams you secretly cherish.
You take a slow, deep breath, rest your hands upon the marble railing, and quietly gaze at the brightly illuminated kingdom in the distance. Only one question echoes within your heart.
Just then, The sound of approaching footsteps reaches your ears.
You quickly wipe away your tears and turn around.
Standing behind you is your mother... Queen Genelia.
There is no warmth in her eyes, no trace of a mother's affection—only cold authority.
You immediately lower your head.
"Mother... what brings you here at this hour?"
She stops before you, her icy gaze fixed upon your face.
"Why?"
"Do I need anyone's permission to walk through my own palace?"
You lower your head even further.
"N-No, Mother... that isn't what I meant."
A brief silence follows before she extends her hand toward you.
"Give me your Red Coral."
Your eyes widen in surprise.
Instinctively, your hand reaches for the glowing red stone hanging around your neck.
"But Mother... this Red Coral was..."
She cuts you off before you can finish.
"Didn't you hear what I said? I want it now. I do not like waiting."
Her commanding voice leaves no room for argument.
With trembling hands, you remove the Red Coral from your neck.
For a few moments, you simply stare at it resting in your palm.
For some reason, it feels as though the stone doesn't want to leave you.
Yet, without another word, you place it into your mother's hand.
Queen Genelia turns to leave without a single word of gratitude.
Your lips tremble.
"M... Mother..."
She stops, but she doesn't turn around. Gathering every bit of courage you have, you speak softly.
"May... may I attend tonight's royal festival? Just this once. I've never been beyond the palace walls... I want to see what the outside world looks like."
Her answer comes instantly.
"No."
Your heart sinks.
"But Mother..."
She finally turns to face you.
"How many times must I repeat myself?" she says, her voice as cold as ever. "Your life is confined within these four walls. This palace is your world... and it will always remain your world. You will never be permitted to leave it."
Your eyes fill with tears once again.
"But... what crime have I committed?" you whisper.
For a brief moment, Queen Genelia simply stares at you.
Then, without answering your question, she says,
"Do not waste my time."
With that, she walks away, taking the Red Coral with her, leaving you alone beneath the moonlight once again.
You continue gazing beyond the palace balcony, your heart aching as the distant laughter and music of the annual royal festival echo through the night.
The world beyond the palace walls feels so close, yet impossibly out of reach. Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps reaches your ears once again.
You quickly turn around and find your dearest friend, Bella, standing behind you with a cheerful smile.
"Bella... what are you doing here?" you ask in surprise.
She grins mischievously. "I've come to take you with me. Tonight, we are going to the royal festival together."
Your eyes widen in disbelief. "No, Bella. You know my parents. If they discover we've left the palace, they'll have us both executed."
Bella dismisses your fears with a wave of her hand. "Nothing will happen. We'll return before the festival ends. No one will even know we were gone."
Hope flickers inside your heart as you whisper, "Truly?" Bella smiles warmly. "Of course, my sweetheart."
Unable to contain your excitement, you eagerly grab her hand. "Then come, let's go!"
But before you can take another step, Bella quickly pulls you back and laughs. "You silly girl! Are you truly planning to leave dressed like this? The moment people see you, they'll know you're the princess."
She reaches behind her back and reveals a bundle of plain servant's clothes. "I brought these for you. Change into them quickly. Tonight, you're not Princess Juliet... you're just an ordinary servant."
Your face lights up with excitement as you take the clothes from her hands. "Thank you, Bella. You're the best friend I could ever ask for."
Bella says, "Save your thanks for later. Now hurry... our adventure is waiting."
A few moments later, you slip into the simple servant's clothes Bella has brought for you. She carefully hides your long golden hair beneath a plain scarf and drapes a light veil over your face before smiling proudly.
"Now no one shall recognise Princess Juliet." Your heart pounds with excitement as you follow her through a hidden passage behind the palace.
After walking through the narrow stone corridor, you quietly step outside the palace walls for the very first time.
The sight before you steals your breath away. The annual royal festival glows beneath thousands of golden lanterns, while music, laughter, and the cheerful sound of drums fill the night air.
Merchants display beautiful silks, sparkling jewels, handcrafted ornaments, fragrant flowers, and delicious sweets from distant kingdoms.
Children run happily through the crowded streets, laughing as they play games, while noble ladies admire colourful fabrics and brave knights patrol the marketplace.
Skilled dancers perform gracefully, fire performers amaze the crowd, musicians play enchanting melodies, and storytellers captivate curious listeners.
Your eyes wander everywhere in wonder, unable to decide what to admire first. The world beyond the palace is far more beautiful than anything you had ever imagined.
A joyful smile appears beneath your veil as you hurriedly walk beside Bella, eager to see every corner of the festival. Suddenly, your foot catches against a hidden root near a bush.
A frightened gasp escapes your lips as your body loses balance. Instinctively, you squeeze your eyes shut, expecting to hit the ground but the impact never comes.
Instead, a strong pair of arms catches you before you can fall. For a brief moment, time itself seems to stand still.
Slowly, you open your eyes and find yourself staring into a pair of deep sapphire-blue eyes. You cannot look away, as though the entire world around you has disappeared, leaving only those mesmerizing eyes before you.
