Chapter 2 Dr. X

1209 Words
"Mr. Harrison, Mrs. Harrison left the villa with her luggage." Almost as soon as Angela left, Gavin Mcintyre, Bradley's right-hand man, informed him. At that time, Bradley was in the VIP ward of the hospital. Bradley stood by the window, looking at the sky that had just begun to brighten, and couldn't help but frown. He thought, 'What time was it that she left? Did she stay up all night? Or couldn't she wait to leave?' And in the divorce agreement, Bradley had said that the villa was left to Angela. Bradley frowned in annoyance. He took out a cigarette and a lighter from his trouser pocket, ready to light one to suppress the inexplicable emotions in his heart. Remembering that this was a hospital, he forcefully suppressed the thought. He replied to Gavin, "Alright." He nodded in response to Gavin, and then he spoke again, "Any news on Dr. X?" "Yes..." Gavin hesitated, feeling a bit guilty because the information he had was probably going to make it hard for him to leave this room alive. "Well, spit it out!" Bradley's expression was colder now. Gavin nervously replied, "Dr. X... said she's too busy right now and we'll have to wait three months..." "Who the hell does she think she is?" Bradley's voice was ice-cold. "If you have to, tie her up and drag her back here!" For the next few hours, Gavin pulled every string he could, used every contact he had, but still couldn't find a trace of this elusive miracle worker. But it wasn't really his fault. Dr. X, a genius in cardiothoracic surgery, was so mysterious that even when she did make public appearances, no one had ever seen her face. On top of that, she'd been retired for four years. For three months, no one could track her down... As Gavin lowered his head, already hearing the word "useless" for the umpteenth time, he noticed someone walking toward the room. It was Angela, following the hospital director. Before the director could say anything, Bradley's dark voice cut through the air: "What are you doing here?" The director replied, "This is Dr. X, the one Mr. Harrison's been looking for." Bradley stared at Angela as she walked closer. His haunting gaze seemed like it could devour everything in its path. He gritted his teeth and muttered her name: "Angela." The same shock was evident on Gavin's face and even Jessica, lying in the bed, seemed stunned. Angela, hearing her name, simply glanced at him briefly before turning her attention away. With a look of disbelief, she asked the director, "Are you saying the person who needs surgery is her?" She threw a disdainful glance at Jessica, who looked like she could barely breathe, and then at Bradley, who seemed utterly impatient. Bradley instinctively walked over to the bed. "If you've got a problem, take it out on me. Why are you staring at her like that?" Angela didn't seem in the least bit fazed by his urgency; she just looked at him expressionlessly. Seeing her so indifferent to him, a subtle anger began to rise in Bradley. He grabbed her arm. "I didn't know when a low-level hospital aide suddenly became a top-tier cardiothoracic surgeon!" Angela finally met his gaze. Three months had passed, and now she could face him without any emotion. "Mr. Harrison, there are many things you don't know." "And if she's my patient, then it's fine," she added coolly. "What do you mean by that?" "I've made myself clear, Mr. Harrison. I'm sure you can understand." Bradley's anger flared, and he almost said something harsh, but Jessica, weakly lying on the bed, spoke up. "If she doesn't want to, don't force it... Other doctors are fine too..." "But your condition can't wait." Angela, watching her former lover act so intimately with another woman, couldn't help but sneer. How could she have been so blind to fall for someone like him? "She's right. You should find someone else." At that moment, Angela was almost unrecognizable compared to the gentle, compliant woman she had been three months ago. Bradley's anger boiled over. He stood up sharply. "As a doctor, your first duty is to save lives, not pick and choose your patients. This isn't how a doctor should behave!" Jessica suffered from congenital heart disease. She had undergone a heart transplant a few years ago. Originally, it was thought that everything was fine, but in fact, after the surgery, Jessica's complications were very serious and she needed another surgery. However, the difficulty of the second surgery was very high, and there were only a few people in the world who could do it. Dr. X overseas could have helped, so four years ago, Jessica secretly went abroad seeking treatment without telling Bradley. However, for some unknown reason, Dr. X suddenly retired, and no one had been able to find her since. Later, Jessica missed Bradley so much that she felt that if she couldn't live, she didn't want to die in a place without Bradley. So, four years later, she came back. And Bradley, knowing everything, directly divorced Angela. Of course, this was all Jessica's one-sided story. As for whether there were any other hidden reasons, only Jessica herself knew. In order to save Jessica, Bradley spared no expense in money and manpower to find Dr. X's whereabouts. Finally, they received news two months ago that Dr. X was going to come out of retirement. However, until today, no matter how tempting the conditions Bradley offered, Dr. X was unwilling to come for treatment. She said she had decided to make a comeback, but she would give herself three months of relaxation first. Bradley thought, 'What kind of dogmatism is this? Could a life afford to wait?' Angela held herself with an air of superiority. "Mr. Harrison, perhaps you don't understand. With my standing in the medical field, I can refuse any surgery I don't want to do." Bradley couldn't let someone talk to him like that. He immediately snapped back with his usual arrogant attitude. "Let's make a deal. If you agree to treat her, I'll sign the divorce papers without any trouble..." "Stop right there," Angela cut him off, clearly uninterested in his words. "Mr. Harrison, you're overestimating yourself. In my eyes, you're really nothing." "This illness, only I can treat it." Angela glanced at Jessica's condition, her mind already made up. "Looking at her like this... after her next episode, Mr. Harrison, you might want to head to the funeral home and make a cremation appointment." Bradley bristled at her mocking tone. He looked up at the director. "Is what she's saying true?" The director nodded. "It's true." Angela glanced at her watch. "If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving now." Bradley stared coldly at her retreating figure, her words echoing in his mind. He felt a sudden wave of helplessness and let his arms fall to his sides. The room fell silent, the atmosphere heavy with tension. The director watched him, shaking his head in sympathy. It had been so hard to find a doctor, but now she refused to take the case. "Mr. Harrison, you'll need to come up with another plan. I'll be stepping out now."
