THE SISTER I BROUGHT HOME

Evelyn Hart has always believed that loyalty is one of the greatest gifts a person can give.

She built her life from nothing, a successful pastry business, a beautiful home, and a marriage to Nathan Cole, the man she believed was the love of her life.

When her closest friend, Sienna Blake, loses everything and has nowhere to turn, Evelyn doesn't hesitate to open her home to her. She gives Sienna a place to stay, a job in her company, and the kind of trust most people would never receive.

Evelyn thinks she is saving her best friend.

She doesn't know she is bringing the person who will destroy her life through her front door.

Slowly, everything begins to change.

Money disappears from Evelyn's company. Important documents go missing. Nathan becomes distant. Sienna becomes increasingly involved in Evelyn's marriage and business, while always maintaining the innocent image of the grateful friend Evelyn believes her to be.

Then Evelyn discovers the truth.

Her husband has been secretly involved with Sienna.

Heartbroken and humiliated, Evelyn decides to uncover how long the betrayal has been going on. But what she discovers is far more disturbing than an affair.

Someone has been deliberately destroying her business.

Someone has been manipulating her marriage.

And someone has been hiding the truth about a tragedy from Evelyn's past.

Just when Evelyn believes she has lost everything, she crosses paths with Adrian Blackwood.

Adrian is everything Evelyn doesn't expect, a powerful businessman with a guarded heart, a sharp mind, and a reputation for never getting involved in other people's problems.

Yet for reasons Evelyn cannot understand, Adrian chooses to help her.

He offers her a chance to rebuild her business. He protects her when the people she trusted turn against her. And when everyone else tells her that she is imagining things, Adrian is the one person who believes her.

But Evelyn refuses to trust him.

After all, the last man she trusted destroyed her.

As Adrian helps Evelyn investigate the people behind her downfall, an unexpected bond begins to form between them.

What begins as an uneasy alliance slowly becomes friendship.

Friendship becomes trust.

And trust eventually becomes a love neither of them expected.

But Adrian has a secret of his own.

He knows something about Evelyn's past.

Something connected to the night Evelyn lost her first child.

Something he has been keeping from her.

Then Evelyn receives an anonymous message:

“You think Sienna is the reason you lost your child. Ask Nathan what really happened that night.”

Suddenly, Evelyn realizes that the betrayal didn't begin when Sienna entered her home.

It began years ago.

As Evelyn uncovers one secret after another, she discovers that the people she called family may have been working together to destroy her and that the man who has become her greatest source of strength may be holding the key to the darkest secret of all.

Evelyn must choose between the painful truth and the comfortable lies she has believed for years.

And Adrian must decide whether protecting the woman he has fallen in love with is worth exposing a secret that could destroy them both.

Because sometimes, the person who saves you from your darkest season is the very person who was destined to change your life forever.

And sometimes…

the greatest love story begins after betrayal.

The Life She Thought She Knew
Evelyn Hart had always been grateful for the life she had built. It wasn’t perfect, but it was good. She had a business she loved, a comfortable home in a quiet town, and a husband she had been married to for seven years. There had been difficult seasons, as there were in every marriage, but Evelyn had never seriously questioned their future together. She believed that whatever challenges came their way, they would eventually find their way through them. Most mornings began at Hart & Honey, the little pastry shop she had started in her home kitchen. She loved the smell of fresh bread and vanilla filling the shop before the doors opened, and she enjoyed watching familiar customers walk in and ask for the same things they ordered every week. Some came for her cakes, others for her pastries, but many simply came because they had grown accustomed to the warmth of the little shop and the woman behind the counter who always remembered their names. It was hard work, but it was hers. Nathan had supported her from the beginning. When she had first started taking orders from their kitchen, he had been the one reminding her not to give up whenever business was slow. “You’re going to make this work,” he had told her. She had believed him. In those early days, Evelyn had never imagined that the business would grow into something people in town knew and trusted. She had also never imagined that the man who had encouraged her to believe in herself would one day become a stranger to her. The changes had started slowly. Nathan began coming home later than usual. He spent more time on his phone and seemed distracted whenever Evelyn tried to talk to him about his day. Sometimes, she would sit across from him at dinner and realize that he was barely listening to anything she was saying. At first, she blamed his workload. His property development company had been growing, and there were always new projects demanding his attention. Meetings ran late, clients called at odd hours, and there always seemed to be another problem waiting for him to solve. Evelyn understood that. She didn’t want to be the wife who complained about every late night or demanded attention when her husband was trying to build his company. So whenever Nathan came home late, she told herself it was work. Whenever he became distant, she assumed he was tired. Whenever he turned his phone away from her, she convinced herself that there was nothing to worry about. Then there was Sienna. Sienna Blake had been Evelyn’s closest friend since university. They had shared almost everything over the years, from embarrassing stories and university memories to family problems and personal struggles. Evelyn had always thought of Sienna as the sister she never had. So when Sienna suddenly lost her job and had nowhere to stay, Evelyn didn’t think twice before offering her a place in their home. “You can stay with us,” she had said. Nathan had looked at her for a moment before nodding. “Of course.” Sienna had promised it would only be for a few weeks. Four months later, she was still there. Evelyn didn’t mind. Sienna helped around the house and sometimes assisted at the bakery when things became busy. Having her around had even made Evelyn feel less guilty about the long hours she spent working. There was always someone at home when Evelyn returned late, and Sienna had become part of their daily routine so naturally that Evelyn stopped thinking about the fact that her friend had originally planned to stay for only a few weeks. Still, something had changed. There were moments when Evelyn walked into a room and the conversation stopped. Sienna had become unusually quiet around Nathan, and Nathan seemed to avoid looking at Evelyn whenever the three of them were together. She noticed it, but she didn’t question it. She trusted them. On Thursday evening, Evelyn decided to surprise Nathan. She finished at the bakery earlier than expected and stopped at the market on her way home. She bought a bottle of wine, some ingredients for dinner, and a box of Nathan’s favourite chocolates. As she drove home, she smiled to herself. Maybe they needed an evening together. Maybe Nathan was simply stressed, and she had been worrying unnecessarily. They had been married for seven years, and she knew better than anyone that marriage could go through quiet periods without meaning that something was wrong. The thought comforted her. The house was quiet when she arrived. “Nathan?” she called as she closed the front door. There was no answer. She carried the shopping bags into the kitchen and set them on the counter. She was about to start preparing dinner when she heard a voice from upstairs. Sienna. Evelyn frowned and glanced at the clock. It was almost seven. She wiped her hands on a towel and walked towards the stairs. As she climbed, she heard Sienna laugh. There was something strange about the sound. It wasn’t the laugh Evelyn knew from years of friendship. It was softer, almost nervous, as though Sienna was trying not to be heard. Evelyn reached the hallway and noticed that Nathan’s study door was partly closed. She could hear them talking. She couldn’t make out every word, but then she heard Nathan say Sienna’s name. Evelyn stopped. Her first thought was that perhaps they were discussing something she didn’t know about. Maybe Sienna had a problem and had gone to Nathan for advice. It wouldn’t have been unusual. Nathan had always been kind to her because she was Evelyn’s friend. She almost turned around. Then Sienna spoke. “I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this.” Evelyn’s heart began to beat faster. Nathan answered quietly. “You knew what this was when you came here.” Evelyn stood completely still. What was he talking about? She moved closer to the door. “I love you,” Sienna whispered. Evelyn felt the colour leave her face. For a moment, she wondered if she had heard correctly. She remained where she was, barely breathing as she waited for Nathan to respond. There was a pause. Then Nathan said, “I love you too.” The shopping bag slipped from Evelyn’s hand, and she pushed the door open. Nathan and Sienna both turned towards her. For a moment, nobody moved. Evelyn stared at them, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Sienna was standing close to Nathan, her hand still resting against his chest. The position they were standing in made everything she had heard suddenly impossible to misunderstand. Nathan looked terrified. Sienna began to cry. “Evelyn…” She couldn’t speak. Her eyes moved from Sienna to Nathan and then back again. She noticed the way they were looking at each other, the familiarity in their expressions, and the fear in Nathan’s eyes. It wasn’t something that had just happened. It was familiar, too familiar. “How long?” Evelyn finally asked. Nathan took a step towards her. “Evelyn, please let me explain.” She stepped back. “How long have you been having an affair with my husband?” Sienna covered her mouth as tears ran down her face. Nathan said nothing, and in that silence Evelyn understood more than any explanation could have told her. This wasn’t a mistake, nor was it one terrible night. It had been happening behind her back while she opened her home and trusted them both. Every late night, every interrupted conversation, every strange look between them suddenly seemed to have a meaning she had been too trusting to see. She looked at Sienna, the woman she had called her sister, and then at Nathan, the man she had built her life around. Neither of them could give her an answer, but she already knew the truth. Her marriage had been falling apart long before she discovered it. She had simply been the last person to know. End Of Chapter One
