Chapter 1 - New Girl
(Kailee's POV)
Walking down the halls of a new school is never new to me. About every year and half two if I’m lucky, my family moves from place to place. I’ve learned to deal with making new friends, basically a new life. After a while I decided to stop getting to know people because I will only hurt them in the end.
I’m now in my senior year of high school. Honestly I’m not even nervous, more like anticipation of what’s going to happen.
Of course I’m running late on the first day. Not only did I sleep through my many alarms I had jumped in for a quick shower. Long story short, I am not a morning person whatsoever. I walked out in a leather jacket, royal blue crop top, denim raven black ripped jeans, and my favorite leather combat boot heels. Braided the back of my chocolate brown hair then tied it up in a high ponytail.
Felt like all the red lights were out to get me. I literally stopped in front of every single one. I pulled into the student parking lot of Parchment High ten minutes after leaving my house. I then backed my sunset orange jeep wrangler in a perfect corner space. Putting the car in park, I started grabbing my backpack from the passenger seat before heading into the building.
The hallways of all the other schools I’ve been to always consisted of students running, punching, slamming, and yelling all around where you dared to look or even hear. I was expected to find all that chaos today as I walked down them. To my surprise I didn’t find anything to compare. It was almost like this school was on sleeping pills or something. All I found were the occasional rough house over something moronic, but nothing near like my last couple of schools.
As I was wandering around the school trying to find my locker I collided into someone when I rounded a corner. I caught myself before I fell flat on my ass. Just when I heard a small crash, that’s when I noticed a book. I instantly picked up the book to give it back to the person I bumped into. The person I bumped into is a male around 5’8. His body is lean with a little bit of muscle to his biceps. He has medium length dusty black hair with cyan blue tips tied up in a messy man bun. Looks like he trimmed his beard this morning with how short it looks. Before I could have the chance to apologize it seemed like I was beaten to the punch.
“Crap, sorry I wasn't looking where I was going, are you okay?” the man uttered his apology. His tone was very sweet and apologetic.
“Yes I am, thanks for asking. No need to apologize, it is me who should be sorry,” I responded, my voice sounding a little nervous but calm at the same time.
“Oh here is your book that you dropped,” he gently removed the book from my hand while nodding his thanks. I was about to walk away when he introduced himself.
He uneasily laughed out, “I’m Reece, nice to meet you.” Reece then extended out his big-knuckled hand. I saw he was nervous to introduce himself, and a bit hesitant.
For a shy guy he had a good grip. “Hello Reece. The names Kailee, Kailee Chandler.” You could tell that there was awkwardness around us. “Nice meeting you as well,” I swiftly added.
“Wait, you're Kailee Chandler the new girl?” Reece asked with astonishment.
I confusedly shook my head yes, “Yes that I am. Why do you ask?”
“I just remembered that I’m your guide for the next few days,” he gently stated. “Didn’t mean to alarm you.”
“No worries Reece.” He made a simple, yet polite grin. Looking around I finally located my locker.
“Can I put my things in my locker before giving me the grand tour?”
“Yeah, of course.” Reece replied.
Taking a few steps to my rusty maroon locker I spotted that the lock was a thumb print. He must have seen the puzzled look on my face.
“Haha, that was the same look I had as well,” he softly chuckled.
After hearing him explain the reason behind such high tech of a lock my curiosity peaked. I’ve been inside this school for less than thirty minutes and was already impressed. I’m never impressed, honestly it’s kinda hard to impress me.
Putting the necessary things away, we happened to make small talk. Once I shut the locker door I was now ready for the school tour. The two of us continued making small talk while he was showing me around. Reece seemed easy to talk to, also quite interesting.
We were almost done with the tour when a tall hispanic man around 6’1 approached us. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Reece tense up. I was about to ask him if everything was alright only for him to stop me with a side eye. Looking back in the direction of the man who was now nowhere to be seen. Confusion hit my face as I glanced down empty halls.
Reece continued walking with me even though the tour ended. He insisted on walking with me until the bell rang. A part of me was still curious about earlier. Just then I heard a piercing cold voice of a male. The voice was calling my name, yet wherever I glanced I didn’t see anybody but Reece.
“Umm... Reece, did you hear that?” I asked.
“Hear what?” he answered with his left eyebrow c****d.
“Nevermind. I- I must be hearing things,” I accidentally stuterd.
Great the first day and I’m already a basket case.
Reece walked off to Art History after asking for my phone number. I then got a text reading: Hey. You'll be great, don't worry.
Before heading into Dance I texted him back with: Thanks for the encouragement.
Few hours went by since walking into dance. I now am sitting in Algebra-1A. Learning the choreography for dance was surprisingly not complicated. In fact the instructor said I may have been the finest dancer there. I for sure got a couple loathsome glances, mostly from girls on the Varsity Cheer team.
Once the bell rang I was already halfway out the door when I spotted Reece. He wasn't alone though. There was a guy similar from earlier in the day towering at 6'0. Although they didn't seem that friendly towards Reece. What I saw next made my anger rise.
