New Faces, New Beginnings

516 Words
The classroom buzzed with excitement as students settled into their seats. The sound of laughter, chairs scraping the floor, and pages flipping filled the air. Maya couldn’t stop thinking about the boy who had fallen at the school gate. “I hope he’s okay,” she whispered. Just then, their class teacher, Mrs. Adams, walked into the room. “Good morning, class.” “Good morning, ma’am!” the students replied in unison. Mrs. Adams smiled before writing two words on the board. FINAL YEAR “This is your last year in this school. Some of you will become doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, writers, and entrepreneurs. But before that happens, I want you to learn something even more important than Mathematics or English.” The class became unusually quiet. She turned around and said, “The friends you make and the values you build here will stay with you long after your report cards are forgotten.” At that moment, there was a knock on the classroom door. “Come in.” The door slowly opened. Standing there was the same boy Maya had helped that morning. His neatly combed black hair and nervous smile made it obvious he wasn’t comfortable being the center of attention. “Class,” Mrs. Adams announced, “this is our new student.” “My name is Daniel Brooks,” he said softly. “My father was transferred here because of his job. I hope we can all get along.” Some students welcomed him warmly. Others simply stared. A few whispered among themselves. “He’s the boy who fell this morning.” “What an embarrassing first day.” Daniel lowered his head, pretending not to hear. Mrs. Adams looked around the room. “There’s only one empty seat.” Everyone followed her gaze. The empty seat was… …right beside Ethan. Ethan sighed quietly. He preferred studying alone. Making friends was the last thing on his mind. Daniel walked over and sat beside him. “Hi,” Daniel said with a smile. Ethan barely looked up. “Hi.” An awkward silence followed. During lunch break, Maya approached Daniel with two sandwiches. “I thought you might be hungry.” Daniel laughed. “So you’re the girl who saved me from becoming the school’s biggest joke.” Maya smiled. “I only picked up your books.” “No,” Daniel replied. “You saved my confidence.” Before Maya could answer, three senior students walked into the cafeteria. Their leader pointed at Daniel. “So… you’re the new kid?” The room fell silent. Every student turned to watch. Daniel slowly stood up. “Yes.” The senior smiled—but it wasn’t a friendly smile. “Let’s see if you survive your first week here.” Without another word, they walked away. Daniel tried to laugh it off. “I’m sure they were joking.” But Maya wasn’t so sure. Across the cafeteria, Ethan watched quietly. For the first time that day… He had a feeling that this school year was going to be unlike any other.
