Chapter 20 How could he have let her go? He hadn’t had a choice. He’d begged, laid his heart out, and yet here he was, alone, as he lifted his hand to the bartender and gestured for another beer. He took in the glass behind the bar and the empty stools beside him as he remembered the hurt on Chris’s face. She’d always been there for him, and he’d never understood how deep her fear of being hurt went. “Charge to your room?” the bartender said as he slid another pale ale in front of him. “Yup, keep them coming.” Jake lifted the bottle and took a swallow, glancing at some suits at a table nearby and a few women at another.
