Chapter 1: Two Shadows in the Light
The pristine, ivy-covered arches of St. Jude’s Academy felt like a joke to Leo Vane. To the rest of the student body, the private academy was an elite gateway to Ivy League universities and trust-fund inheritances. To Leo, it was merely an alibi.
Adjusting the cuff of his crisp white uniform shirt, Leo leaned against the marble hallway lockers, his sharp jawline set, dark eyes calmly scanning the bustling corridor. Underneath his tailored blazer, a fresh purple bruise painted his ribs—a parting gift from a rival enforcer who had made the mistake of stepping into Vane Syndicate territory at three in the morning.
"Watch it," a voice sharp enough to slice glass broke his train of thought.
Leo tilted his head. A girl stood before him, balancing a stack of heavy AP Calculus textbooks in one arm and a leather planner in the other. Her dark hair was tied back in a neat ponytail, but her hazel eyes held an unmistakable, lethal bite.
Elena Vance.
She was the school’s top-ranked scholar, the valedictorian candidate, and—unbeknownst to anyone in this hallway—the daughter of Chief Marcus Vance, the man who had spent the last five years trying to put Leo’s father behind bars.
"My bad, scholar," Leo murmured, his lips curving into a low, teasing smirk as he took a slow step back, giving her space. "Didn't realize the hallway belonged to the honor roll."
Elena’s eyes narrowed as she appraised him. She didn't flinch. In fact, her gaze lingered just a fraction of a second too long on the way his shirt pulled against his shoulders. "It doesn't. But basic spatial awareness is usually taught in middle school, Vane. Try keeping up."
"Is that a challenge, Vance?" Leo leaned closer, lowering his voice until it was a smooth, gravelly whisper that sent a sudden, traitorous spark down Elena's spine. "Because I'm pretty good at catching up when I want to."
Elena held her ground, her chest rising and falling as she locked eyes with him. The air between them instantly charged with raw, undeniable friction—a dangerous blend of mutual suspicion and intoxicating attraction.
"Don't waste your breath," Elena replied coldly, stepping past him, though her heart pounded against her ribs.
Twelve Hours Later — 2:15 AM
The rain pelted the industrial docks on the south side of the city. The high school student was gone; in his place stood the heir to the Vane empire. Clad in a tactical black jacket, a dark mask concealing the lower half of his face, Leo crouched behind a shipping container, a suppressed semi-automatic resting steadily in his grip.
"Shipment is secured, boss," his lieutenant whispered over the comms. "We move on your mark."
Before Leo could give the order, a sharp thwack echoed through the night. The lieutenant dropped, struck by a high-caliber round from an unseen sniper.
"Ambush!" Leo growled, rolling into cover as heavy gunfire ripped through the rain-slicked pavement.
Sparks flew off the iron shipping containers. Leo popped up, returning fire with lethal precision, taking down two advancing attackers before diving behind an overturned forklift. Blood hit the concrete, the scent of gunpowder thick in the damp air.
Across the yard, perched high on the steel gantry of a crane overlooking the docks, another figure moved through the shadows.
Elena adjusted the night-vision scope of her tactical binoculars. She wore lightweight body armor under her rain jacket, a police scanner hummed softly in her earpiece. She had tracked illegal radio chatter on her father’s secure band, sneaking out of her bedroom window to verify the drop herself.
Click.
Through her lens, she caught sight of the masked operative below—his moves impossibly fast, precise, and ruthless. He moved like a shadow, disarming an attacker, slamming him into the steel hull of a truck, and taking control of the line of fire.
Suddenly, a hidden gunman on a high ledge aimed directly at the back of the masked operative's head.
Elena’s instincts kicked in instantly. Reaching into her belt, she drew her tactical stun grenade, pulled the pin, and hurled it off the crane deck with perfect trajectory.
BANG!
A blinding flash of light and a deafening roar disoriented the ambushers. Leo whipped around, using the split-second distraction to eliminate the remaining threat on the ledge. As the smoke cleared, Leo snapped his head upward toward the crane.
Through the pouring rain and heavy shadows, his eyes met hers.
He couldn't see her face behind her dark visor, and she couldn't see his behind his mask. But for three agonizing seconds, as rain washed over the iron docks, both held their breath, feeling an eerie, electric jolt of recognition pull between them in the dark.
Then, the siren wails of approaching police cruisers shattered the silence.
Without a word, both vanished into the night.
