-Aliauna’s POV-
2 months later
Sitting in my dark cell, I listen to the screams. All I can hear are screams! I don't even feel the burning from the silver around my wrists and ankles anymore; I feel nothing. I'm empty. I just want to die!
'Don't think like that! We will get out of here!' My wolf yells at me.
I want to believe her, but I've been here for weeks and no one has come. Just then, I hear his evil laugh.
"Little wolf, time to play," he looks at me like I'm his prey.
For the next what seems like forever, he did horrible things and left me bleeding and covered in bruises.
Suddenly, I'm standing beside my best friend as she slits her throat. Kayleigh drops to the ground and I watch in horror as the life drains from her eyes. Mateo is now in front of me.
"It's all your fault! You got her killed!" Mateo disappears just for Kaiden to appear.
His evil laughter filled the air once more. "It's all your fault. You should have come with me, and maybe she would still be alive." Kaiden tries to grab me and I scream "NOOO!".
I launch up in my bed, screaming. Looking around, I realize it was just a dream. The door swings open, revealing a distraught-looking Tyler.
"Ali! Are you ok?" He asks, coming to sit beside me.
"Sorry for waking you, I'm fine," I realize he doesn't seem convinced, so I smile, "Tyler, really I'm ok."
"Just... get some sleep, ok?"
I nod my head, and he leaves.
Not that I'm gonna get much sleep.
-
I wake up as the light is shining through my sage green curtains. After last night's nightmares, I fell back asleep just to toss and turn for the rest of the night.
I get out of bed and go into my washroom. After I do my business there, I go to pick out clothes for the day. While trying to figure out what to wear, I think maybe today can be a good day when I remember what today is.
Dammit! f**k me! Why can’t I have one good day?!
Today is Kayleigh’s funeral.
After I take a few minutes to compose myself, and just put on some sweatpants and leave my tank top on for now. I’ll get dressed later.
I go downstairs and into the kitchen, where Eric is making breakfast. Hearing me walk in, he turns to me and smiles before turning back to what he was doing. Sitting down, I pull out my phone and look through my photos, remembering all the good times.
One photo is of my whole team and I standing in front of a brick building all geared up. It was after our first big bust, there were about 30 rogues that started a drug ring. We killed or subdued all of them before backup arrived. It was a big night for all of us.
Another was of me and Kayleigh in our swimsuits at the beach. Mateo was in the background, in the middle of falling into the water. I decided on a day off, our team deserved a beach day. Kayleigh and I were trying to take a selfie when Tyler chased Mateo and Mateo tripped right when I clicked the button.
I looked through a couple more photos when I heard Tyler’s voice.
“You eating?” He asks.
“Um, ya, I guess,” I say, putting down my phone. I look around and see that we were just missing Mateo.
Eric sets down everyone’s plates and sits down. “Let’s eat!”
-
There's half an hour until the funeral, and I’m standing in front of my mirror, in my black blouse and black leggings, deep in thought.
‘Asuna, I don’t know if I can do this.’ I say to my wolf.
‘Aliauna, take a few breaths, you're gonna be ok.’ she tells me.
I do as told, and it calms me a bit. Taking another look in the mirror, I look at all my scars. My body is riddled with them. It took me a while to let people see them. I lift my shirt a bit, showing my most recent one. A puncture would scar. From the day I lost my best friend. In the fray, I didn’t realize I was wounded and ended up passing out from blood loss.
A knock at my door brings me out of my thoughts. Spinning around, I pull down my shirt and face Mateo. It looks like he had been crying.
“Come here,” I say to Mateo and open my arms. He walks over, and I wrap my arms around him. “I don’t know if I can do this either.”
Mateo pulls away and seems annoyed. “We should get going.”
We walk downstairs and meet the rest of the guys. Mateo and Eric walk out the door, and I stop. Tyler goes to follow when he looks back at me and realizes I’m not following.
“You ok?” He asks.
“I will be. Just give me a minute,” I tell him.
He nods.
Once I compose myself, Tyler and I walk out to Tyler’s truck and get in. Tyler's in the driver's seat, I’m in the passenger, and Eric and Mateo sit in the back.
-
Half an hour later, we pull up to the moon and sun church where the funeral takes place. Tyler parks the truck and gets out. Eric and Mateo follow. I take a few minutes, but I get out of the truck.
We make our way toward the entrance, and I freeze.
Mateo looks back at me and lashes out, “I’m sick of your s**t! She was MY god-damn mate! You don’t see me freezing up all the time and making this all about me! Get your s**t together.”
“Mateo! What the hell?! Kayleigh was her best friend! And she’s not making it all about herself!” Tyler yells at him.
“You stay out of this!” Mateo points at Tyler, then me, “and you! You're gonna stop freezing up and get your ass inside the god-damn church and pay your respects to MY f*****g mate!”
“I-I’m sorry.” I stutter.
Mateo turns away and storms into the church. Eric quickly follows him, and Tyler goes to console me when I stop him.
“No. He’s right. She was HIS mate.” I push past and walk into the church.
There aren’t many people inside the church, just a few agents, a few councilmen and… her family.
Her mother stood with her two older brothers in the front pews. Kayleigh’s brothers Kevin and Mac are 20 and 22, their father was murdered when Kayleigh was 10.
I was about to walk over when I saw Mateo go over to them. Looking around, I realize no one wanted me there. I’m the reason she died. I go over to the casket and look at my friend
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. I should have never got you or the team involved with Kaiden. It’s all my fault. I promise you, I will get your revenge!” I whisper before walking out of the church.
-Mateo’s POV-
“And you! You're gonna stop freezing up and get your ass in the god-damn church and pay your respects to MY f*****g mate!” I yell at Aliauna.
“I-I’m sorry,” she stutters, and I walk away with Eric hot on my tail.
‘What the hell was that? You know, Aliauna and Kayleigh were like sisters!’ My snow leopard growls at me and I block him out.
I walk into the church and quickly evade Eric by going into a small room off to the side. Sliding down one of the walls, I put my head in my hands and take a few breaths.
“I miss you so much, my little flower,” I whisper.
Getting up, I walk out of the room and spot my mate's family. Walking over to them, her mother spots me.
“Oh Mateo, you poor thing!” Kristin wraps her arms around me while sniffing. I let Kristin's small frame hold me for a couple of minutes. When she lets go, I look at Kayleigh's brothers.
“Kevin, Mac, nice to see you. Just an awful reason to be here.” My voice cracks.
They both nod their heads.
“There’s something I want to tell you three,” I say.
“What is it, dear?” Kristin asks.
“I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect her! I did my very best, but it wasn’t good enough. I never deserved her. She was too good for me. So I’m sorry.” I say, and a stray tear escapes. Wiping it away quickly, I look at Kristin. She has a small smile on her face.
“It’s not your fault, Mateo. Never blame yourself. When you and Kayleigh found each other, Kayleigh couldn’t shut up about how perfect you were.” She chuckles.
The voice of the head councilman interrupts us. “Everyone, please say your goodbyes, then we will move outside to the lake.”
We don’t do normal funerals. When a child of the moon or sun dies, we send them back. Once all the friends and family of the deceased say their goodbyes, the body is wrapped in white cloth and put in either the boat of the moon, which is made of silver or the boat of the sun, which is made of gold. After that, the boat is pushed out into the lake and either the mate or a close family member shoots an arrow that is on fire at the boat. The body burns, which releases the soul, and they can finally go home to the moon or sun. This tradition applies to all supernatural except some vampire clans, who say that their people who die are weak and don’t deserve to ascend home to the moon.
“Mateo, would you like to go first?” Mac asks me.
“No, you guys can go,” I tell them.
I watch them, and when they come back, I walk up to the casket.
At first, I don’t know what to say, but it soon comes to me. “My beautiful mate, I’ve loved you since the day we met, even tho we were young you meant so much to me, and you still do. I miss you every day. I miss your laughter, your smile, and your beautiful pools of dark chocolate. You were a wild cat, alright. You were smart, kind, and kick ass. I loved it, and I still do. The bravest thing you ever did was take your life to save others. After the first couple of days, I didn’t want to forgive you, but I realized you did it to protect the people you love. I’m so sorry we didn’t have more time together. I’ll talk things over with Aliauna, just give me some time. Goodbye for now. See you in the moon's garden.” I get up and look at my mate's beautiful face one more time before walking outside.
The lake is beautiful; the water is clear as day, and the sun shines on it creating sparkles. In the middle of the small lake is an island with a single willow tree that just adds to the beauty.
Soon, all the people file out of the church and stand around the lake. The boat of the moon is already sitting in the water, ready for my mate's body. Once everyone has a spot, the councilmen bring out a long form wrapped in white clothes. My mate. The councilmen set her in the boat and turn to the crowd.
“We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Kayleigh MountainPeak, a strong, brave, independent woman who proudly served the council as an agent. Sadly, her life was cut short, and she only lived to be 18, but today we help the Moon Goddess welcome her home!” The head councilman says.
-Aliauna’s POV-
After I ran out of the church, I found a maple tree close by that I was sitting in now. I could see all that was happening at the lak. I heard everything the councilmen said. I watched as they pushed the boat out into the lake.
And now I’m sitting here while Mateo is handed the bow and arrow. He dips the arrow into the fire, then draws back. Once he is lined up, Mateo releases the arrow, and I watch as it sails through the air. The arrow hits its target. The flames quickly engulfed the boat and my best friend's body.
I let out a sigh. She’s finally free, she’s home in the moon's garden.
-
About 45 minutes passed by, and the people cleared out. I stayed in the tree the whole time, just watching the boat that once held my best friend, my father, my mother and my whole pack.
I could see my team, they were walking together toward the parking lot. I felt a buzz in my pocket. Grabbing out my phone, I see a text message from Tyler.
Tyler: where are you?
Me: go home without me
Tyler: Ali, c’mon just come back, and we can all go home
Me: Tyler, I said go home! That’s an order!
Tyler: ok, I’ll see you later. Just don’t stay out too late.
I put my phone away and watched as Tyler and the team drove away. When I think everyone is gone, I hope down from my perch in the tree. I walk over to the church and turn towards the road. Before I can continue towards the road, a voice stops me.
“Aliauna?”
Turning, I see the head councilmen.
“Head councilmen, nice to see you,” I say.
“Oh, Ali, you know you can call me Samuel… I didn’t see you at the lake.” Samuel says.
“Um, I wasn’t at the lake. I was in that tree.” I point to the big maple tree.
Samuel looked confused.
“I realize no one wanted me there. I’m the reason she’s dead.” I tell him.
“Aliauna Azelia (A-zee-lia) Malloy! Don’t you ever blame yourself! Ever! You know, they all wanted to help you get justice for what Kaiden did. It’s not your fault. Now, go home to your team and get a good night's sleep.”
I nod my head and continue to the road. Samuel was a friend of my family, and when my father died he took me into the council, he's also a werewolf. Hiding behind some trees, I take off my clothes, shift, grab my clothes in my mouth, and start running through the trees along the side of the road.
I’m only 17, but I come from a family of special wolves that can shift and find their mate at 15. These special wolves also have a special power. Mine being Mind, I can move and grab things with my mind. The best part of my power is I can project memories into people's heads, so to speak.
A snapping sound brought me out of my thoughts. Coming to a complete stop, I spin around, barring my teeth. A little bunny hops out of the bush and I sigh.
‘Did the little bunny scare you?’ Asuna asks mockingly.
‘Shut up!’ I say.
I continue; the wind flowing through my white, silky fur. The dirt under my paws feels amazing! I just love being outside.
My joyful feeling soon fades when I come up to my so-called home. It’s about four o’clock and I don’t feel like dealing with people.
The house is a large cabin-style with two floors and a basement. It’s surrounded by trees and forest life. There are six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen/dining room, a living room, and a game room. In the basement, there are cells, an area with couches, and a gym.
I decide to not shift back. Walking up to the door, I use my nose to push it open.
“Aliauna?” I hear Tyler’s voice before he comes around the corner. “Asuna?” He asks.
I shake my head, telling him I’m still in control, then walk up the stairs and to my room. When I’m in my safe place, I shift back and put on my pj's. I jump onto my bed, curl up in a ball, and fall asleep almost instantly.
