CHAPTER 1: The Boy Who Could Sew
The final bell rang.
Students poured out of the classroom like water escaping a broken dam, filling the hallway with laughter, footsteps, and the scraping of chairs.
Ren Takamori remained seated.
He waited.
Not because he had somewhere to go.
He simply preferred the classroom after everyone had left.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
No questions.
No unnecessary conversations.
Just him and the soft afternoon sunlight slipping through the windows.
Ren opened his school bag and carefully pulled out a small sewing kit.
Inside were needles, thread, measuring tape, scissors, and several pieces of carefully folded fabric.
He glanced toward the classroom door.
Empty.
Good.
He placed a piece of cloth on his desk.
His fingers moved naturally.
Thread through the needle.
A small knot.
Then another.
Stitch.
Pull.
Stitch.
Pull.
To most people, it was nothing more than sewing.
To Ren, it was different.
It was the one thing he understood.
Ever since he was little, his grandfather had taught him how to make traditional dolls. Their clothing had to be precise. Every fold, every stitch, every tiny detail mattered.
Ren had learned to love it.
But he had also learned something else.
People laughed at boys who liked sewing.
So he kept it secret.
"Still here?"
Ren froze.
A girl's voice.
He quickly covered the fabric with his notebook.
Standing at the classroom entrance was Mika Hanazawa.
She was one of the most noticeable students in school.
Long dark hair.
Bright eyes.
A confident smile.
And somehow, she always seemed to have enough energy for three people.
Ren looked away.
"Yeah."
Mika stepped into the classroom.
"You've been staying late almost every day."
"I'm studying."
She looked at the covered notebook.
"Studying?"
"Yes."
"With a sewing needle?"
Ren's heart stopped.
He slowly looked down.
The needle was still in his hand.
"..."
Mika blinked.
Ren blinked.
The silence became painful.
Then Mika smiled.
"You're sewing!"
Ren immediately shoved everything into his bag.
"You saw nothing."
"I definitely saw something."
"You didn't."
"I did."
"You didn't."
"I really did."
Ren sighed.
There was no escaping this.
Mika pulled a chair closer and sat beside him.
"What are you making?"
"Nothing."
"That's a very suspicious-looking nothing."
"It's for my family's work."
"Oh."
Her expression suddenly changed.
"Wait."
She leaned closer.
"Can you actually sew clothes?"
Ren hesitated.
"A little."
"A little?"
Mika laughed.
"You're acting like you accidentally learned how to perform surgery."
Ren didn't answer.
She stared at him for a few seconds.
Then her eyes lit up.
"Could you make a costume?"
Ren looked at her.
"A costume?"
"Yeah!"
Mika pulled out her phone and showed him a picture.
A character wearing an elaborate fantasy dress appeared on the screen.
"I'm going to a cosplay event next month."
Ren stared at the costume.
The design was complicated.
Very complicated.
But his fingers immediately began calculating the pattern in his head.
The measurements.
The fabric.
The stitching.
The structure.
He didn't even realize he was staring until Mika waved a hand in front of his face.
"Hello?"
Ren blinked.
"Sorry."
"You like it, don't you?"
"No."
"You totally do."
"I was just looking at the design."
"Which means you like it."
Ren looked away.
Mika smiled.
"So..."
She leaned forward.
"Will you make it for me?"
Ren's eyes widened.
"Me?"
"You're the only person I know who can sew."
"I've never made cosplay clothing before."
"But you can learn."
"That's not how it works."
"Please?"
Ren looked at her.
Mika's expression had completely changed.
The energetic girl who normally joked about everything was suddenly serious.
She really wanted this.
Ren looked at the picture again.
Then at the fabric inside his bag.
Something inside him shifted.
For years, he'd hidden the thing he loved because he was afraid people would laugh.
Now someone was asking him to use that very skill.
Maybe...
Maybe there was nothing embarrassing about it after all.
Ren took a breath.
"Okay."
Mika's eyes widened.
"Really?!"
"I'll try."
She jumped from her chair.
"YES!"
Ren nearly fell backward.
"Keep your voice down!"
"Sorry!"
Mika laughed.
Then she held out her hand.
"I'm Mika."
Ren stared at her hand.
They had been classmates for months.
He knew her name.
But somehow, it felt like they were meeting for the first time.
He slowly shook her hand.
"Ren."
Mika smiled.
"I know."
For some reason, that made his heart beat faster.
Neither of them noticed the sunlight fading outside the window.
Neither of them knew that a simple costume would become the beginning of something much bigger.
And neither of them was prepared for the feelings that would eventually be stitched between them.
