The CEO's Trap
Louella Hart had learned early that power was never given. It was taken. Built. Defended.
At twenty-nine, she stood on the forty-second floor of Hart Global's headquarters. Outside, the city skyline gleamed through the storm. In her hand was a merger proposal that could either save her mother’s legacy... or hand it over to corporate vultures.
She read the final page again:
Cole Industries. Full strategic merger. Joint leadership transition. Louella set the papers down with controlled precision. She looked at the room full of board members waiting for her to break.
"Let me be clear," her voice cut through the room like a blade. "Hart Global is not begging for a savior. We are negotiating from strength. Anyone in this room who forgets that won't be here by tomorrow."
No one dared to move. Good.
Her assistant stepped in quietly. "Mr. Cole has arrived."
Louella didn't blink. "Already?"
"He demanded the early meeting."
Of course he did. Kenneth Cole—the heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire. Beautiful, ruthless, and always one step ahead.
"Send him in."
Kenneth walked into the room like he owned the entire building. Dark suit, open collar, eyes unreadable.
"Louella Hart," he said, stopping just short of her space. "You’re even harder to reach than your reputation suggested."
"And you're earlier than yours suggested," she replied without backing down.
A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips. "I like to set the pace."
For two straight hours, the boardroom was a war zone. Valuations, stock options, voting rights—Louella fought for every single inch. Kenneth matched her sentence for sentence, totally calm, totally lethal.
When the exhausted board members finally emptied out, only the two of them remained.
Louella gathered her files, ready to walk out, when Kenneth’s voice stopped her dead in her tracks.
"Your CFO is stealing from you."
Louella froze. Slowly, she turned back. "What did you say?"
"Three off-the-books wire transfers," Kenneth said, his tone entirely serious now. "Someone inside Hart Global is moving money. They’re trying to cripple you from the inside so you’ll accept a desperate deal."
Louella stepped closer, her eyes flashing. "And you’re telling me this out of generosity?"
"Out of strategy," Kenneth whispered, leaning down slightly so his eyes met hers. "I don't partner with people who let themselves get blindsided."
"I don't get blindsided," she snapped. "And if anyone is playing me, they’ll pay for it."
Kenneth lowered his gaze to her lips for a fraction of a second, then looked back into her eyes. "That... is exactly what I wanted to hear."
He closed his briefcase and turned toward the door. With his hand on the handle, he paused.
"Louella?"
She looked up.
"This merger... if we do this, it won't stay strictly business for long."
Louella's pulse spiked, sharp and unwanted. "Are you warning me, Kenneth... or threatening me?"
Kenneth’s eyes darkened.
"Both."
