Chapter1
The Verdict within the Verdict
“ I saw her come this way,” Katherine heard a male say as she stayed put in her hiding place, trying her best not to make a sound.
She dared to peek around the corner and notice her pursuers peering at where she was hiding, itfour of them in total.
Scared of being discovered, she flattened herself against the wall again, her heart thumping wildly within her chest.
Let me help you, her wolf…Stacy urged within Katherine's head, desperate to help her but Katherine shook her vehemently, fear overriding every other emotion.
“Shh…I can smell her, she's close,” another voice remarked, followed shortly by the sound of him sniffing the air.
Oh s**t! Katherine thought, her eyes widening in panic.
She had momentarily forgotten that the olfactory sense of her kind was heightened above other species and right now she was easy target, thanks to the jasmine perfume she always wore.
Footsteps approached where she hid, their owners trying their best to mask the sound of their shoes against the tarmac but one other area her gifted in was sharp hearing.
C'mon, Kat, Stacy pleaded with her. Switch with me…they will soon be upon us.
Still, she was reluctant to relinquish control of her body to her wolf essence. The last time she had done so, her wolf had gone berserk and massacred her father's birds.
They were close now. She could smell their sweat and the sickly wet scent of male lycans. Her ears could pick up the sound their heart beating in their chest.
The footsteps stopped approaching.
Curious to know what was happening but not courageous to risk a look again, she looked at the the shadows of her pursuers, on the ground beside her, the panic building up within her. Any moment now, they would round the corner and that would be the end of her.
Frantically, she looked around, her eyes searching for a way out but there was none. She had chosen the worst place for a hiding spot and for the umpteenth time she cursed Ace Darkwood for putting her in this situation.
She heard them speaking in muffled tone but still they didn't approach, at least she could tell they were still standing still by looking at their shadows.
Frustrated, she strained her ears to hear what they were saying to each other but the loud thumping of her heart made if almost impossible to focus.
Kat, please! Stacy pleaded still.
“Over here, over here…she's this way.” A familiar female voice suddenly screamed from the entrance of the alley.
Seles.
Katherine was confused. What was Seles trying to do? How could Seles betray her like this?
She could also sense the confusion drifting from the men. They had their prey cornered already so how could she have gotten behind them and out of the alley?
“Quick…she's getting away,” Seles shouted again, her voice carried by the wind.
Then Katherine understood.
Seles wasn't betraying her, she was trying to help her, drawing the lycans attention away from Katherine real location.
The four cursed soundly and vaulted back the way they had come, hurrying towards Seles voice and shouting at her not to lose Katherine.
Soon, the sound of their running footsteps faded away, leaving Katherine alone in the alley.
She relaxed against the alley wall, breathing out a sigh of relief. To think she had been so close to letting Stacy take over.
She waited a bit in the dark alley, cautious incase Ace stooges came back into the alley.
After verifying that she was truly alone, she raced back out the alley praying inwardly she won’t be caught by one of her assailants.
She paused a bit on the sidewalk and drew the hood down over her face and began walking briskly towards in the direction of the city's gate with her head huge low.
All round her, electronic billboards displayed her face, proclaiming her exile in bold neon prints.
The order was exile not kill her so why were Ace stooges trying to kill her?
“Katherine….” A whispered voice called out to her.
Katherine's head snapped up, immediately alert and ready to bolt. She tried to identify who had called out to her but saw her assailants heading towards her, sniffing the air with their nose as they did so.
Alarmed and filled with fright, she pulled the hoodie lower still and continued walking briskly towards the gates, sometimes jogging.
She looked up at the gates, glad to finally be close to it but her relief was shortlived as she spotted two of her pursuers there perched on all fours, nostrils flaring and their wolf eyes peeking out of their human faces.
She turned around sharply to return the way she had come but halted when she saw the other two still coming from that direction. Obviously, they had split themselves to cover more ground.
Confused and not sure what to do next, she began to shiver in fright, feeling hopeless and already mourning for the rest of her life that she would never get to live.
Even when the men at the gate began bounding towards her, transforming to massive massive wolves as they ran, Katherine was still unable to act, rooted to the spot by her fear while her wolf tried desperately to come out to the forefront snd protect them both.
Accepting this as the end of the road for her, she dropped down to her knees and sat on her haunches, shutting her eyes tight and waiting for the fangs and claws to tear into her.
The other two finally took notice of her and also transformed to their wolves and pounced towards her ready to have their pound of flesh also.
Still, Katherine remained motionless, accepting death as her fate.
All her life, she had never had to do anything for herself. She always had people to do her bidding, afterall she was the Alpha King only child.
Yes, she had been taught how to fight but never for once did she figure she would have to use what she had been taught to save herself.
Kat, please, let me help, her wolf begged. Let me save us both.
Deciding she had already lost everything and didn't have anything else to lose, she agreed to switch places with Stacy, her consciousness slipping into a shell at the back of her mind and leaving Stacy in charge.
The change was instantaneous, the swift sudden and smooth and not a moment too soon.
Stacy rolled out of the way as the four wolves collided in a tangle of furs, fangs and clans.
Enraged, they regrouped and began circling her, snarling and growling, their murderous intent and bloodlust seeping out.
We can't win this, Stace, Katherine reasoned, already giving up hope. Let's just run away.
But her wolf was having a blast. It's been a really long while since she was given control like this and Katherine wanted her to turn tail and run like a scared dog. Never.
She was going to see that they both came out of this unscathed.
She howled and hurled herself at the bunch, snapping here with her fangs here, tearing off flesh and fur with claws there but still she was totally outnumbered and even she was holding her own against them, she could see that they were reasoned when it came to combat.
She separated herself from and began to back away while they advanced, trying to figure out a way to turn this to her favor but there really was nothing she could.
Kat, I think we gonna run, she told Katherine.
Told you so didn't I? Katherine chided her.
She feigned a move to the left and ran instead away from the gates when they tried countering her fake move.
She raced, the wind wiping her fur as she did. It was heaven! This was the first time she had been allowed to operate independently and she was loving every minute of it even though Katherine was right now quaking with fear inside on their shared body.
“Katherine…” she heard someone whisper Katherine's name as ran, a female voice. She strained her ears to pick up the location of the sound and her eyes searching without breaking her stride.
“Katherine quick, over here…” she heard the voice again but this time in her head. The person had spoken telepathically to her through the pack link.
Seles.
Stacy could feel the relief Katherine was feeling at the moment and she was curious. They were being pursued and yet Katherine had time to feel relieved.
You know her? she asked Katherine, her powerful paws slapping the tarmac as continued running.
She turned her massive head to look behind and saw her attackers were still in hot pursuit.
Yes, that's Seles, my childhood friend, Katherine replied her. She helped me escape those men before.
A slender petty girl about Katherine's age came into view ahead, indicating they follow her with a jerk of her head before sprinting off down an alleyway.
Well, if Katherine trusted her, then that means she was okay. Stacy changed direction and followed her down the alley, leaping over a car in shadows.
Noticing the wolves had run pass the alleyway, she paused, her body heaving as she panted. Seles strode over to her, a bundle of clothes clutched in her grasp which she threw at Stacy’s paws.
“Switch with Katherine now, I need to speak with her,” Seles demanded, folding her arms over her breast and leaning against the wall.
Something about her bugged Stacy, made her wary of Seles.
She bent her head low to growled softly, focusing her glowing golden green eyes on Seles but didn't show the slightest hint of fear.
Stand down, Stace…she's okay. Trust me on this, Katherine reassured her wolf.
Choosing to trust Katherine, Stacy relaxed her stance even though the wariness she felt for Seles still remained.
Gradually, she shifted back giving controls once more to Katherine. She wanted to still stay out but she needed to rest so her wounds would heal.
Soon, Katherine stood completely naked before Seles who indicated the clothes she had thrown in the ground earlier.
Katherine hurriedly dressed, frightened eyes looking around to check if anyone was closing in. Done dressing, she rushed to Seles and flung her arms her, sobbing as she nestled her face against the side of Seles neck who held her and patted her back like a baby.
“What's going on Seles?” She enquired as soon she got herself under control.
There was a brief silence and Katherine felt a strange emotion she couldn't identify coming from Seles.
She raised her head to stare quizzically at her childhood friend.
“Will tell you, first let's get out of here…they will come back when they realise they have lost you,” Seles finally replied.
She led Katherine through the alley, through a series of turns and twists. It was like a labyrinth and Katherine head swarm with trying to take note of the way they took.
“Where we headed?” She asked Seles.
Seles didn't reply but kept on moving. The strange feeling Katherine had picked up from Seles was still there.
“Seles…answer me please.”
“We are heading to the gates…this another way to it,” she responded, still moving.
Suspicion began growing in Katherine's mind but she quelled it. There was no way Seles would harm her, she had even helped her the first time.
Finally, they exited from the alley and true to her words they were before the huge gates. Seles had really taken a different route to it and they had arrived at the side of it.
“Well…I guess this is where we part ways, Katherine. This the best I can do for you.”
Seles turned around and faced her, her eyes teary as she looked at Katherine.
Emotions bubbled up in Katherine. Seles had come to her father's mansion with her mother to work as a maid and immediately they had clicked, forging a bond between themselves that no one could step between.
“Are you sure you not going to end up in trouble because you helped me?” Katherine asked her, concerned for her friend.
Seles smiled sadly and stretched out her hands outwards.
Katherine ran to her and hugged her tight, reluctant to let go.
Then she felt something sharp against her stomach.
“I can't get in trouble because I'm doing this to you, my best friend.” Seles whispered against her ear.
Katherine felt a pain in her stomach and she pushed Seles roughly away, trying to use her hands to stem the flow of blood gushing out.
With a look of disbelief, she raised her eyes from her torn gut to Seles face. Gone was the sad smile she had displayed earlier. A sinister smile stood in it's place.
Katherine gaze in pure disbelief at her best friend with the blood flowing out, the notes of betrayal playing in her head.
“Why?”
