PROLOGUE
Madeline was scared to leave the car, she stepped out of the car slowly, cautiously, it was almost as though she was just.....anxious. It had been so long since she was in such a setting; tons of people her age hanging out in pairs and groups. It seemed intriguing in a way. Perhaps it was because she had been secluded from the rest of the world for so long that was why she found it so.
She stepped out of the car fully and absentmindedly shut the door behind her. Her palms were clammy and she had a lone drop of sweat sliding down the back of her neck slowly. She dragged in a deep breath before adjusting the strap of her backpack on her shoulder.
You can do this, Madeline.....
With that thought in mind, she began advancing towards the regal entrance of the main campus. And had she not been too anxious she would have noticed that most eyes were now focused on her, she would have noticed that she had made the perfect entrance for the start of a new session. She would have noticed that she gave off that filthy rich girl vibe.
If she hadn't been so anxious she would have noticed that not a single piece of clothing she had on wasn't branded, from her jacket to the top, down to her trousers and her shoes, even her backpack was branded. And the sleek black car that had dropped her off, it was something to talk about.
She walked with as much confidence as she could muster, and she prayed with everything she was that her legs didn't wobble awkwardly as she walked.
"Whoa...."
"Check out that chick...."
".....definitely a fresher"
"Va-va-voom....."
"Look at that jacket....."
"f**k yes.....".
Of course, Madeline was way too engrossed in her thoughts to hear the remarks people made as she walked past them. She wasn't exactly sure about the way to where she was headed but she was sure she'd find a freshman like herself going that way to tag along with, that way, her first day wouldn't be as agonizing as she suspected it would be.
God.....she felt like breaking into a full out run for absolutely no reason at all, and she was more than aware of the fact that Alvise wasn't here with her, and he wouldn't be here to make her feel better. She had stepped out of her comfort zone and she had to deal with that.
"Hey".
She turned around abruptly on hearing someone's voice from behind her. A dark haired girl with the bluest of eyes and the brightest of smiles stood there. She waved at her subtly.
Pulling on a smile, she returned her wave.
"Hey". She replied trying her best to not sound awkward.
"I'm Roxanne, but you can call me Roxy". She said to her. Giggling softly she added. "No one calls me that though, everyone calls me Annie"
Madeline chuckled awkwardly.
"Do I call you Annie or Roxy?". She asked her.
She shrugged.
"Which do you prefer?". She asked her.
Madeline thought it through for a second, she truly had no preference, and she had only just met her so she didn't even know what name suited her better. Annie struck her as the good-girl kinda girl while Roxy struck her as the opposite, and she couldn't quite tell whether or not she was the good-girl or not so good girl.
......and she was overthinking.
"I really don't know". She said at last.
Roxanne chuckled.
"Just call me Roxy then". She said.
And Madeline nodded.
"I saw you walking alone, you seemed kinda lost so i thought I'd approach you, you know, cliche beginning of a typical college year story". Roxanne said.
Madeline chuckled while nodding.
"I'm Madeline". She said. "Nice to meet you, Roxy".
Roxanne grinned.
"Any nicknames, maybe Maddie, Mads, Della". She asked her.
Madeline shook her head. People called her Maddie from time to time but she didn't exactly go by it.
"Just Madeline". She said.
She was suddenly afraid of not seeming cool and all.
"Well that's fine. I bet your parents wanted to preserve the meaning of your name that's why they didn't give you a nickname". Roxanne said smiling.
And Madeline had to force herself to not flinch at the mention of her parents.
"I...guess So". She replied quietly.
"You're not much of a talkative, are you?".
And she shook her head once more.
"That's fine too, I'm talkative enough for the both of us". Roxanne said. "Come".
Madeline's smile returned and she followed her newly found friend gingerly.
~~
Madeline jitteriness knew no bounds as they all settled down when the professor stepped in; an elderly man who was dressed regally in a black suit. His footsteps echoed in the quiet lecture hall as he made his way to the middle of the podium, and on getting there he faced the class and a small smile curved his lips.
"Welcome to Greyman's College". He said in an eloquent English accent.
And the bunch of freshers couldn't help but cheer loudly. Madeline found herself chuckling as she clapped along with the others, she couldn't believe that she had made it this far, couldn't believe that she was actually here seated among all these people, she was here, and she was a better person.
"I go by the name of Ernest Eastwood, Professor Eastwood is fine. And I'll be taking you ENG 101, a course that helps you develop your expository and persuasive writing skills". The professor begun his introduction when their cheers died down.
And Madeline watched and listened to him attentively as though her life depended on it. With her pen in hand and book flat on the desk, she waited for the slightest opportunity to take down notes. She knew she seemed like an overly enthusiastic nerd but she just couldn't bring herself to care.
"He must have been really handsome when he was younger, he still is in every honesty". Roxanne said from beside her.
And she smiled and nodded without saying anything. She was too enrapt in what was being said to care about the fact that their elderly professor could have been handsome when he was younger.
Raxanne chuckled on noticing how focused she was, and because was easily influenced by people, she also opened her book and diverted all her attention to the professor.
~~
"It was great!". Madeline answered the question she had been waiting for him to ask.
And Alvise chuckled lightly. Her enthusiasm amazed him.
"That's good to know". He said. "I'm glad you enjoyed your first day".
She was literally grinning from ear to ear, her eyes had never seemed brighter and her voice had never seemed louder.
"I hadn't expected it to go so well". She said.
He wasn't surprised, it was Madeline after all, she never expected anything to go smoothly. He was glad things were beginning to change for her though.
"Tell me all about it". He said to her.
She nodded enthusiastically.
"I started out nervous and anxious, but then i met this girl, Roxy, she was so nice to me, and i felt better around her". She said.
Alvise smiled and nodded.
"And then we found our way to the first lecture venue, The professor was so brief and concise, I loved his lecture!". She continued. "And then we moved to the next venue after the class was over, the next professor wasn't as concise as Professor Eastwood but i enjoyed the lecture nonetheless".
He nodded once more. She barely noticed that she was doing most of the talking and so she carried on.
"And when it was time for lunch we stopped by and had some snacks before proceeding to our next class. I was so excited i could hardly finish my snacks".
She had him there, he had to say something now.
"You hardly finished your snacks?". He asked her.
And she nodded absentmindedly.
"And then....".
"You didn't have breakfast, Madeline". He interrupted softly.
Her gaze flickered around guiltily.
"I...i just wasn't hungry. I am now though, I'll have dinner". She said.
And all he could do was let out a resigned breath.
"And what happened next?". He prompted.
Her smile returned immediately and her eyes lit up once more.
"Oh yeah, and when we got to the next class everyone seemed so nice and accommodating, they all wanted to talk to me". She continued.
And a smile curved his lips again, the most genuine smile he had smiled so far. He was glad that she was finally seeing the kind side of people. He was glad she was so very happy about where she found herself in life at the moment.
"And they were so easy to talk to. At first, i thought I'd be awkward and out of place". She was saying.
"And why would you think that?". He asked her.
She shrugged.
"You know...". She said quietly, her enthusiasm dimmed considerably.
He shook his head.
"You don't ever have to feel that way, Madeline, never". He said to her, "Do you understand?".
She nodded and her smile returned.
"You know what the best part was?". She asked him and he shook his head.
"Tell me". He said.
"Knowing I'd come back to tell you all about my day". She said. "I tried so hard to memorize everything so I wouldn't miss anything while telling you about it"
He felt warmth spread through his chest and for a moment all he did was stare at her. He couldn't understand how it was that he fell harder and harder for her every single time. And when he didn't respond immediately, she said:
"What?".
He shook his head.
"I just want to hug you right now, so very much". He said.
And she felt her cheeks heat up. She stood up and made her say around the table, and the very second she got to him, he took her hand and pulled her against himself so she settled on his laps, and then he wrapped his arms around her for a hug, a tight and cozy hug which lasted for a couple of seconds. He rubbed her back over and over while lovingly planting light kisses on her shoulder.
"I love you". He said to her. "Always".
