The drive to the mansion was quiet mainly because Alvise was in no mood to talk at the moment, and also because Madeline was too occupied thinking about her time spent with the others. Had she not been distracted, she would have noticed that Alvise was rather quiet and perhaps even irritated. Yes, she had apologized and he had agreed to let the matter go, but it didn’t change the fact that he had been upset earlier.
He had been worried sick about her when he called her phone and had received no response from her, more than a thousand thoughts had crossed his mind all at once. He couldn’t help but wonder if she was alright, he couldn’t help but fear the worst; what if her illness had suddenly kicked in and she had broken down? What if she had gotten lost? She was after all, unfamiliar with the town. What if she had been kidnapped? it was logical, perhaps someone wanted to get back at him by going through her instead. He had thought about everything all at once.
He had even gone as far as sending some men to scout the area, he had known that he was probably overthinking the whole thing but he very well couldn’t help himself, it was Madeline that was concerned here after all. And when she finally called him back saying she was out hanging with her friends and had lost track of time, he wanted to admonish her but couldn’t because she apologized immediately, and she seemed to have had some fun, she seemed relaxed, he very well couldn’t ruin that for her. But of course, it didn’t mean that his mood was still at its best.
“What are you thinking?”. He asked just to get rid of the almost annoying silence.
Madeline snapped out of her thoughts on hearing his voice. she inclined her head to face him as a smile spread across her lips.
“Nothing much, just thinking about the others”. She told him.
His brow arched ever so slightly.
“You had a good time then?. He said and she nodded.
“I did, surprisingly”. She said. “And the twins aren’t as bad as I thought they’d be”.
She had initially though Alison and Madison would be overly fake and annoying, and perhaps she had been right in thinking so since the two friends had initially seemed like the perfect college bitches, they fit the role perfectly, effortlessly even; from their beautiful blonde hair to their perfectly manicured nails, to the way they drawled almost seductively as they spoke, it was all too….apt.
Alvise nodded simply.
“They were all telling me about how they spent their last break”. She told him. “It was...amazing”.
True that she could only ever look back at her past with pain and regret, but it didn’t stop her from looking ahead with optimism; there was no reason why she couldn’t be just as free and happy as the others, she was young just like them, and like them, she needed breaks too.
Alvise understood that too, and it was for that reason he made a suggestion.
“We could go on a vacation during the next break”. He said.
Her eyes widened at once as excitement begun building up within her.
“We could?”. She asked him.
He nodded. A smile curved his lips as he glanced at her , her excitement was contagious.
“Where would you like to go?”. He asked her.
She didn’t miss a breath before replying.
“Italy”. She told him.
He arched a brow even more.
“Italy?”. He asked her.
She nodded. If they went to Italy she would have fun with the others while also spending quality time with him, it was the perfect vacation.
“Yeah. The others are also going to Italy”. She told him.
He nodded considerably.
“I see. And they I invited you to join them?”. He asked her.
“They did”. She replied grinning.
Something about the new friends of hers didn’t sit well with him, he knew she was naïve and inexperienced in most ways of the worlds, and he didn’t want to think that she was desperate fpr any kind of connection with people her age. He wasn’t worried about that they’d bring any harm upon her or something, he was just worried that they were materialistic people who were only hanging with her because she was rich and all.
“Do your friends know where you live?”. He asked her.
She nodded.
“I told them I live at Bascaville street”. She replied.
“Where exactly at Bascaville street?”. He asked her.
She chuckled somewhat guiltily while shrugging.
“I left out the De Luca Estate part”. She told him.
“Why?”. He asked.
She cleared her throat quietly on noticing that he wasn’t smiling anymore, he wasn’t exactly frowning or something, he just wasn’t smiling, she couldn’t quite tell whether he was irritated or not.
“You’re kind of a bid deal around here”. She said quietly. “I just…want to be normal”.
There was that, and there was also an irrational fear that nobody would want to hang with her if they knew she lived with the most powerful mafia boss in the country. And that was the exact reason why Alvise wanted her to tell her friends where she lived, if they knew that she lived with the most powerful Mafia boss in the country then they definitely would be more inclined towards being extremely careful where she was concerned.
“I told you before, there’s no such thing as normal”. He told her.
She shook her head subtly.
“For me there is”. She said quietly. She had been through too much, there had to be a ‘normal’, the life she had right now it seemed normal, seemed perfect, and she was happy with it. “You understand, don’t you?”.
He let out a resigned sigh before nodding once.
“I do”. He said.
And nothing else was said throughout the drive.
