I ENDED up getting dusted with cake flour more than Toni did as we took it upon ourselves to focus on baking a chocolate cake and cookies while we waited for news. It took most of the remaining of the morning before Lanz called that he would be leaving the men in the coffee shop and I shouldn’t worry, and that he was needed somewhere else and that he would probably be with me by the end of the day.
His voice sounded tight and of course, I worried some more.
“What is it? What’s wrong?”
