CHAPTER FOUR
Even though he had intended on fulfilling his promise by finding a job the next day, he had come up empty once again. Since then, a week and a half had gone by. He had started the cleaning job at the gym and continued combing the city for new places to apply to during his free time. He was beyond frustrated. This situation had even forced him to miss a date with Jen, one of the girls who frequented the gym. He had been trying to get some action with her for about six months now, but ironically now that she had given him the go ahead he was too broke to take her out. He doubted taking her to Taco Bell would impress her enough to get a piece of ass.
Colton pushed his mood back and headed into the gym to pick up his paycheck. He turned the corner and walked toward Dave’s office, standing just outside with everyone else who was awaiting their cut.
“Haven’t found a full time job yet?” Rod asked. Rod was one of the older trainers who had worked with Dave for over twenty-five years.
“Nah, not yet. This is ridiculous. I figured I’d have a job by now.” He rubbed a hand over the three-day growth on his face. “Maybe if I wait, you’ll retire and I can have your job.” Colton laughed as he teased the older guy.
“I’ll never retire. I can’t afford it. I’d go broke in less than three months.” Rod made a face of disgust. “This world is going to s**t, my boy.” He clapped Colton on the shoulder before walking into the office to get his check.
“You don’t have to tell me that shit.” Colton looked down at his phone and checked his email for any job opportunities. Honestly, he’d filled out so many applications he wasn’t sure where he had applied at anymore. Whoever contacted him first would get an employee. He wouldn’t be picky when it came to his income.
When Rod walked out of the office, Colton walked in and waited.
“Find a job yet?” Dave asked as he pulled the cash out of the drawer and counted out what he owed him.
“f**k no.”
“Sorry to hear that,” he said as he handed him two-hundred and fifty dollars. “Hope this helps.”
Colton nodded and pocketed the money. “It does. Thanks again, Dave. I’ll see you on Monday. If you need me before then for anything, even to fill a shift for one of the trainers, let me know. Call me anytime.”
“All right. Will do.” He watched Colton leave, feeling a bit sorry for him. He knew how stressed out the boy had been over not finding a job. If he would have had more cash flow this month he would have loaned him a few hundred dollars to help him out. He didn’t have anything extra because he was struggling right along with the rest of the world to keep his business afloat.
Colton pushed the door open and walked outside. He noticed Jen standing against the wall, looking at her phone, and took a deep breath. She hadn’t taken the cancellation of their date very well. But he didn’t give a s**t. He wasn’t going to waste money that he desperately needed on her.
When the door opened she glanced up from her phone, her eyes locking on him as she took a long drag from her cigarette. “Get paid?” She shifted against the building as she flicked her ashes into the wind.
“Yeah.” He curled his nose up when the wind whipped around him, throwing the stench of smoke into his face.
Jen snorted and tossed her cigarette down, then stepped on it to put it out. “But you can’t take me out?” She shook her head and crossed her arms over her chest, c*****g her hip out as she threw some attitude in his direction.
“No, I told you I was broke. Just because I have money doesn’t mean I can spend a couple hundred on a date,” he snapped at her.
She made a face at him and said something but Colton had already walked off, heading toward his place. He ignoring the fact that she was talking to him because he really didn’t want to hear anything else she had to say.
He wasn’t sure why he had ever wanted to go out with Jen in the first place. She smoked, which was nasty, and she sounded like a money grubber. f**k her! She didn’t get the struggle because she had a p***y. Women who had a nice rack and a wet slit could get anything they needed in life. If they played their cards right they could have an all-expenses-paid ride and if they were lucky, it would be with someone who gave a f**k about them.
When he got home Mason was just settling in for his nightly geeks-r-us gaming extravaganza. He would be there all night and into the next morning. Because it was Friday he would have the entire weekend to nerd out in front of the TV screen.
Colton plopped down on the sofa beside Mason and handed him the cash he had just received from Dave. “Here.”
“What’s this?” Mason asked as he took it, thumbing through it quickly while counting the bills.
“It’s as much as I have for now. I know I owe you more, but I’m still trying to get the full amount. Put that toward my part of the rent.” He sighed heavily and scrubbed his chin. “No lectures, please. I don’t think I can take it right now. I’m getting depressed, dude. I don’t know what the f**k to do.” He ran his hands through his hair and laced his fingers behind his head as he leaned back, trying to relax.
Mason reached over and rubbed his thigh. “Don’t worry about it, Colt. Just keep looking on Monday. We’ll figure it out.” He offered him a warm smile and rubbed his hand back and forth again, offering him as much comfort as Colton would allow him to.
“Thanks.” Colton put his hand on Mason’s and gave it a squeeze. “All right, enough of that gay shit.” He laughed and stretched out, throwing his legs over Mason’s lap as he put his head on the pillow at the end of the sofa.
Mason reached over and picked up the folded newspaper, tossing it on his chest. “I circled a few things you’re qualified for. You can apply for them on Monday.”
Colton tossed the paper off of his chest as he turned and watched Mason go back to playing his game. “Thanks. I’ll check them out later.”
