CHAPTER FIVE
A few hours later, Colton sat at the kitchen table looking through the paper. His laptop was open as he mapped out all the places he planned to hit up on Monday morning. Most of them had been circled by Mason so they were at least worth checking out.
Dietary Aide for The Meadows - Full time, 40+ hours a week, no experience necessary. 1st and 2nd shift available. Apply today, start on the 1st.
He needed something now. He couldn’t wait a week to be hired and then another three to four weeks for his first paycheck.
Colton turned his attention back to the paper and checked where the position was located. It was the big nursing home a few blocks down. He sighed and pulled up the website, deciding to put an application in anyways. Even if he didn't have the time to wait on a paycheck, he'd take the job if he didn't have one by then. He had to keep all of his options open.
His eyes scanned the next ad that was circled.
Street sweeper - Must have CDLs, clean driving record-
Colton laughed and stopped there. Everyone wanted a clean driving record, which he didn't have. With a sigh, he shifted his eyes to the next ad.
Window Washer - Must be available on the 1st for training. $15 per hour to start. Clean background check, drug test, and driving record-
Fuck.
Colton moved on, cursing his own stupidity for getting that speeding ticket. He read every ad out loud, trying to determine his qualifications for each position. He didn't care what he'd have to do to make money. He just needed a job as soon as possible.
Over the last week he had applied for countless waiter positions. However, in the city jobs like that went quickly, and they were usually filled before he was done with his application. You had to be in the right place at the right time to even think about getting a serving job. Especially at the fancy restaurants.
As Colton turned the page and folded the newspaper, he noticed a big red circle around a help wanted ad. It was one of Mason’s circles. When he looked more closely at it recognition hit him. He knew exactly what ad it was and could recite it without needing to read the words on the page.
Wanted – f**k-boy. Full-time hours, daily pay, 60/40 cut, you keep all tips. Must be appealing to the eye, have a body to die for, and be open minded to new adventures. Call 555-f**k to get started today!
He silently read it a few times and then shook his head, pushing the idea away before he could seriously consider it. He needed money, but he didn’t want to compromise his integrity to get it. Even as the thought crossed his mind his gaze shifted back to the words ‘daily pay.’ He needed cash right now. At this point he was so desperate that the temptation was too hard to resist.
He punched in the numbers on the ad and listened as the phone rang. When a cheery voice picked up he pushed aside his apprehension and spoke.
“Hi, my name is Colton. I’m responding to the ad in the paper about a...” Colton hesitated, biting back the words before they were uttered. He couldn't believe he was doing this, but he had no choice. He lowered his voice before uttering the word for the position he was applying for. “Fuckboy.”
“Oh, right. You have to come in and apply for that. Mr. Covington will want to look you over.”
When she rattled off an address to him he jotted it down quickly, making her repeat it to make sure he got it right the first time. “Is there a specific time to apply?” he asked.
“Not really. We’re in the office twenty-four seven. Just stop in when you have time.”
“Thank you.” Colton put his phone down after the lady hung up, looking at the address on his notepad. Punching the address into Google Maps, he brought up the area, knowing exactly where it was after seeing the location. He had been in that area on Thursday. Probably in the same building because that was where the temp agency was and he had been desperate enough to put his application in.
What did he have to lose? He only had a week until the rent was due and he had to do something. Getting kicked out of this place wasn’t an option and he refused to go home to mommy and daddy with his tail tucked between his legs. He had told them when he moved out that he wouldn’t be back to stay. He was a man, he had to take care of himself. He couldn’t rely on them all of his life. Colton couldn’t depend on anyone but himself, so what would it hurt to go check it out. If it was shady, he would just leave.
