The summer of 1939 was an idyllic time in France. Despite the rumors of war, everyone was certain that the politicians would prevail in the midnight hour. Hitler was bluffing, it was said, and he had achieved all his goals in restoring Germany as a major power in post-war Europe. The British had been pushed to their limit and agreed that they would join France in crushing any acts of aggression by the Nazis.
