Carl remembered back to what seemed to be a million years ago, back on a rainy day during Angie and his senior year at the University, before the war broke out, before he joined the SS. They had gone out to the lake that day, hoping it would not rain, but rented out a bungalow just in case. The rain came down as a shower, and they were forced to run from their canoe by the lake back to the cabin up the hill. They were thoroughly drenched but fell laughing into each others" arms.
