Broken Promises

chapter five

Rivers POV

"Dude, you okay? You look like hell." Kyle says, looking up from his phone.

"Honestly, no I'm not okay. I don't like seeing her in this place." I told him with tears in my eyes.

I'm usually not one to try but I don't know anytjing as no one is telling us anytjing because we are not her familly and her mom hasnt came back out either. That's when my phone goes off and it's our boss.

"Hello." I say with a shaky voice.

"I got a job for you. Be at the warehouse in twenty minutes." My boss says as he hangs up the phone.

"Kyle call Tanner and tell him boss wants a meeting in twenty." I say, putting my phone into my pocket and walking out the door.

"Hello?." Says Tanner over the phone, talking with Kyle.

"Tanner be at the warehouse in twenty." Is all Kyle says as he hangs up the phone and starts the car.

We all pull up to the warehouse and walk inside.

"Okay we're here. What the hell do you want?" Kyle says.

"Watch your tone with me." Says our boss, Jason, turning his chair around so he could face all three of us. "There's some business that needs to be taken care of."

"Look, I don't have time for this. My girl is in the hospital and I need to get back to her." I say, getting very frustrated because dealing with work is the last thing I wanna be doing right now.

"Calm down dude." Says Tanner.

"I can't calm down. Not while Rose is in that damn place!" I say as I punch the wall.

"Now boys, no need to get all pissy." Says Jason.

I shoot Jason a death glare, not really caring to listen to this conversation anymore.

"So boys, I need you to deliver a package and a message for me." Jason says as he stands up from his desk.

"Where and when does this need to take place?" Kyle asks, shrugging his shoulders.

"Half an hour from now." Jason says.

With that, we all walk out of the building and load the package into the back of Tanners truck.

"Take a deep breath man, it's nothing we haven't done before." Says Kyle.

"I don't know, this time just feels different." I say, running my hand through my hair.

"Different how?" Tanner asks, pulling out his keys as we call climb into the truck.

"I can't say exactly. I just have this weird feeling that something's gonna go wrong." I reply back, shutting the passenger door.

We get to the place where we are supposed to deliver the package along with a message from the boss, but as I suspected things didn't seem right.

"Where's the guy we are supposed to meet?" Asks Kyle.

"I'm not sure, but this doesn't look good." Tanner replies.

That's when a guy came up and I feel a gun being pointed at the back of my head. "Well River, we meet again."

"Put the gun down." Kyle says, as he and Tanner both pull out their guns.

Next thing I know, a shot is fired and the guy who was standing behind me is now laying on the ground with a bullet hole in his head.

"Lets get out of here." I say, running back to the truck.

We drop the package and place the note on the guys body. Then leave without hesitation and go back to the warehouse.

"Is the job done?" Asks Jason.

"Yes. Now if we're done here, I got other things to do and other places to be." I say as I walk out the door, not even caring if Jason has anything more to say.

I'm standing by Kyles car when my phone goes off.

"River." A little voice says over the phone.

"Yes sunsine." I answer back.

"I had a nightmare and I didn't want to wake mommy, so I called you." Says the little voice.

"It's okay sweetie. You can call your big bro anytime." I say.

"Yay. River when are you going to come home? I miss you."

"I'll be home soon and I miss you too princess. Now it's time for you to go back to bed." I say, as Kyle and Tanner are walking out of the wearhouse.

"Okay. Goodnight." The little voice says.

"Goodnight." I answer as I hang up the phone and put it in my pocket.

"Who was that on the phone?" Kyle asks.

"My little sister, Lisa." I say. "She had a nightmare and wanted to talk to me."

With that we drive off and go to my house so I can see my sister and make sure she's okay before heading back to the hospital to see Rose.

"I'll be right back." I tell Kyle as I get out of the car and jog up to my house.

I unlock the front door and walk through the house and up the stairs to my little sisters room.

I open her door to see her fast asleep and notice that she stole one of my shirts to sleep in.

"Hey sleepy head." I say, as I sit down on the edge of her bed.

"River, is that you?" She asks, her voice heavy with sleep and she sits up and rubs her eyes.

"Yes Lisa, it's me, River. Your big brother." I say, placing a kiss on her little forehead.

She pulls me into a hug and lays her head on my chest. "I miss you."

"I miss you too, but I can't stay long." I tell her in a soft voice.

"Awwwww, but you just got here." She says with a pout.

"I know." I say, as I stroke her back. "Be good okay? I'll see you soon princess."

"Okay." She says laying back down on her bed. "I love you Riv."

"I love you too." I say as I tuck her back in bed and give her another kiss on the forehead.

I walk out of her room, closing the door behind me. I go down the hall to my room while my phone is blowing up with messages from the guys asking what is taking so long. but before going back to the car I quickly take a shower and change clothes. After I've changed into a sweatshirt and sweatpants, I pack a bag with some clothes for tomorrow. Then I make my way back downstairs, where Kyle is currently eating a sandwich.

"I got hungry." He says.

"Let's get going." I say, taking the rest of his sandwich and I walk out of the house and to his car.

"Dude, that was mine." Kyle complains.

"And it was delicious." I say, smiling, taking the last bite of the sandwich.

Kyle just turns and looks at me with a sad face as we leave my house.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital.

Roses POV

I've been laying in this hospital bed for what seems like forever. I say to myself.

"Hey honey." My mom says as she walks into my room. "How are you feeling?"

"I feel fine." I say, turning down the volume on the TV that's in my room.

I wish River was here. I keep thinking to myself over and over again. Without him and Kailey, I don't know what would've happened.

"Something wrong?" My mom asks, concern written all over her face.

"Yeah. I'm just ready to get out of here and go home." I tell her.

That's when Kailey comes walking in with a cute little stuffed teddy bear.

"Hey stranger." I say to her as I sit up in my bed.

"Hey. I got this teddy bear for you." She says handing me the bear.

"Thanks. Its really cute." I say with a smile and pull the bear into my chest hugging it.

"I can't stay long though." Kailey said with a sad face "But I just had to come see you before work to make sure you're okay."

I motion for her to come closer and pull her into a hug.

"I'll see you later." I say, letting her go after the long hug.

"See you later." She says while turning and walking out the door to the elevator.

As the elevator doors open, River steps out in his black sweatpants and grey sweatshirt, carrying a backpack over his shoulder.

Damn he looks good. I say to myself.
