TheSovereign’sChoice

The Sovereign’s Choice The silence didn’t last. A deafening crack split the chamber. One of the ancient pillars finally gave way, crashing into the marble floor with enough force to shake the underground hall. “Move!” Damien lunged toward Seraphine just as a shower of stone exploded where she had been standing. Dust swallowed the chamber. The Council scattered for the first time in centuries. “Sovereign!” one elder shouted. “The chamber is collapsing!” Caelan didn’t answer. His silver eyes searched only one person. Seraphine. She stood frozen, unable to process what she had just witnessed. The billionaire who had hired her… The man whose office overlooked the entire city… The man whose cold voice could silence a boardroom… Had transformed into a creature that shouldn’t exist. A werewolf. Not just any werewolf. The Sovereign. Their eyes met through the settling dust. For a brief second, the ruined chamber disappeared. There was only the two of them. Caelan took one careful step toward her. “Seraphine.” His voice was low. Gentle. She flinched. The movement was instinctive. It cut deeper than any wound Lucien had inflicted. “I’m not going to hurt you.” Another step. “Please.” She stared at him. At the blood running down his arm. At the torn remains of his suit. At those impossible silver eyes. “So…” Her voice shook violently. “It was all real.” Caelan didn’t look away. “Yes.” “The meetings…” “Yes.” “The Council…” “Yes.” “The wolves…” “Yes.” Tears filled her eyes. “And you lied to me.” Silence. He could have justified it. He could have explained the First Law. The Council. The danger. Instead… “I did.” The honesty only made it worse. Seraphine crossed the distance between them before she realized she was moving. Her hand flew. Crack! The slap echoed through the chamber. Time stopped. Every elder froze. The guards stared in disbelief. Damien actually forgot to breathe. No one… No one had ever struck the Sovereign. Caelan’s head turned slightly from the force. He didn’t react. He didn’t grow angry. He slowly looked back at her. Seraphine’s hand trembled. “I trusted you.” Her voice broke. “I defended you when everyone called you cold.” “I thought…” A tear rolled down her cheek. “I thought I knew who you were.” “You let me work beside you.” “You looked me in the eyes every day.” “And all this time…” She looked around the ruined chamber. “…this was your life?” Caelan’s jaw tightened. “I wanted to tell you.” “When?” She laughed bitterly. “After they killed me?” The question struck like a blade. He had no answer. She shook her head. “I don’t even know your real name anymore.” “It is.” She frowned. “My name.” “Caelan Draven.” “It has always been my name.” She searched his face desperately. “For once…” “Tell me something that isn’t a lie.” Before he could answer… The chamber doors exploded inward. Three guards staggered inside. One collapsed immediately. Another was supporting a man whose chest had been ripped open by claws. Blood covered the stone floor. “Sovereign…” The surviving guard dropped to one knee. His breathing came in desperate gasps. “We’ve…” “We’ve been attacked.” Damien rushed forward. “By who?” The guard looked up. His eyes were filled with horror. “Rogue packs.” “They struck the northern sanctuary.” Another guard interrupted. “And the eastern border.” A third whispered, “They’re burning every outpost loyal to the throne.” The Council erupted. “Impossible!” “How many?” The guard swallowed. “Hundreds.” “No…” He corrected himself. “Thousands.” The room fell silent. Thousands. Lucien hadn’t built a rebellion. He had built an army. Damien looked toward Caelan. “Sovereign…” Another guard stumbled through the doorway before anyone could speak. He wasn’t wearing armor. He wore the black tactical uniform of Draven Global Security. Blood soaked his sleeve. “Sir…” He looked directly at Caelan. “The attacks weren’t limited to the sanctuaries.” Everyone stared. The guard continued. “Our corporate headquarters in Zurich…” “…Tokyo…” “…São Paulo…” “They’ve all been infiltrated.” Seraphine blinked. Corporate headquarters? Her mind raced. Draven Global wasn’t just a company. It was… A cover. Every office. Every branch. Every skyscraper. Part of something much bigger. Lucien hadn’t declared war on one man. He had declared war on an entire hidden civilization. Damien slowly turned toward Caelan. “It was coordinated.” Caelan nodded once. “Yes.” “He planned this for years.” The white-haired elder’s face darkened. “And he succeeded because every Alpha was gathered here tonight.” Realization swept through the Council. This had never been an assassination. It had never been about killing the Sovereign. Lucien had lured every major leader into one place… While his army attacked everywhere else. A perfect strategy. Then… A cold voice cut through the chaos. “The human.” Every conversation stopped. The elder pointed directly at Seraphine. “As long as she remains alive…” “…the First Law remains broken.” Several elders nodded. “The sentence must still be carried out.” Damien stepped in front of her instantly. His hand rested on the hilt of his blade. “You’ll have to go through me.” “So be it.” Steel whispered as several Council guards drew their silver weapons. Caelan’s silver eyes hardened. The temperature in the chamber seemed to drop. No one moved. No one dared. His voice came out quiet. “Enough.” Even the guards froze. He looked at the Council. “No one…” “…touches her.” The elder’s expression became grim. “Then you leave us no choice, Sovereign…” He slowly raised his own silver staff. “The Council will convene…” “…to judge the king himself.” Nobody breathed. Seraphine stared at the white-haired elder. Judge… The king? She looked toward Caelan. He didn’t argue. He didn’t protest. He simply stood there, blood dripping from the cuts along his forearm, his silver eyes as unreadable as ever. For the first time since she’d met him… He looked tired. Not physically. Burdened. As though he’d known this moment would come one day. The elder took another step forward. “You violated the First Law.” “You endangered every pack.” “You allowed a human to witness our true forms.” “And now that same human has become the greatest weakness our enemies have ever possessed.” Damien’s jaw clenched. “Watch your words.” “I choose them carefully.” The elder’s gaze shifted to Seraphine. “You.” She instinctively stiffened. “Do you understand what you’ve become?” Her lips parted. “No.” “You are now the most valuable human on Earth.” Silence. She frowned. “…What?” The elder spoke without emotion. “Lucien will hunt you because you matter to the Sovereign.” “Our enemies will hunt you because they believe you can control him.” “Our allies may hunt you because they fear what your existence represents.” His voice remained calm. “You are no longer simply human.” “You are a catalyst.” Seraphine felt her stomach twist. “I never asked for this.” “No.” The elder nodded. “But history rarely asks permission.” Before anyone could respond… A loud alarm echoed through the underground halls. Not the shrill alarm of a fire. A deep, resonant bell. Once. Twice. Three times. Every wolf in the chamber looked up. Damien’s expression darkened. “No…” Another bell rang. The white-haired elder whispered, “The Crimson Bell…” One of the guards stumbled backward. “That’s impossible.” Seraphine looked between them. “What is that?” No one answered immediately. Caelan finally spoke. “It only rings…” “…when one of our sanctuaries falls.” Another bell echoed. Then another. And another. The sound didn’t stop. The chamber grew colder with every strike. Damien slowly counted under his breath. “Five…” “Six…” “Seven…” He stopped. His face drained of color. “They’re all ringing.” The realization hit the Council at once. Lucien wasn’t attacking one sanctuary. He was attacking all of them. Simultaneously. A guard burst into the chamber, barely able to stand. “Sovereign!” He dropped to one knee. “The western sanctuary has fallen.” Another guard rushed in behind him. “The southern sanctuary has been overrun.” A third followed almost immediately. “The coastal packs are retreating.” Messages came one after another. Like dominoes collapsing. Each worse than the last. Seraphine watched in stunned silence. This wasn’t a hidden conflict anymore. It was a war. A real one. Damien looked toward Caelan. “They’re forcing us to divide our forces.” Caelan nodded once. “Exactly.” “He wants us scattered.” The elder frowned. “So where will the main attack be?” Caelan answered without hesitation. “Here.” Every head turned. “Draven Tower.” As if summoned by his words… The lights flickered. Then… The entire chamber shook. Not from beneath. From above. Boom. Another violent impact. Dust drifted from the ceiling. Employees screamed somewhere far above them. Boom. The lights went out completely. Emergency lights blinked on in deep crimson. The room was suddenly bathed in blood-red light. Damien reached for the communicator clipped to his jacket. “This is Damien.” Nothing. Only static. He tried another channel. Still nothing. “They’ve jammed every frequency.” Caelan’s silver eyes narrowed. “They’re already inside.” The Council erupted. “What?” “Impossible!” “The tower’s security—” “Has been compromised,” Caelan finished. Seraphine’s heart began pounding. “They’re here?” Another explosion answered her. This one much closer. The massive Council doors trembled in their frame. A long scratch echoed across the steel. Like claws dragging slowly across metal. Everyone fell silent. Another scrape. Longer this time.I’m The guards instinctively raised their weapons. Damien stepped in front of Caelan and Seraphine. The scratching stopped. For one heartbeat… Everything was quiet. Then… BOOM! The doors exploded inward. Steel twisted like paper. A body flew through the opening. One of the tower’s elite guards. He crashed across the marble floor without moving. Behind him… Dozens of glowing eyes appeared in the darkness. Gray. Amber. Blue. Different packs. One army. One purpose. A deep voice echoed from the smoke. Calm. Mocking. “You always did make me wait, Caelan.” Lucien stepped through the ruined doorway. Back in human form. His charcoal suit had been replaced by a long black military coat marked with a silver wolf insignia. Behind him stood an army of rogue werewolves. Each one battle-scarred. Each one utterly loyal. Lucien smiled as he surveyed the chamber. His gaze landed on Seraphine. Then on the ring still clutched tightly in her hand. His smile widened. “So…” “It seems I interrupted a touching moment.” His eyes returned to Caelan. “I told you before.” “I didn’t come for your throne.” “I came for your future.” He slowly pointed toward Seraphine. “And there she is.”
