I head back to the fire and Lexi is sitting there alone, "The guys are getting food to grill" she says in a monotone voice, looking at the ground.
"Lexi, what's wrong?" I ask.
"I just really thought this would be my chance to get some time with Vinny and he hasn't paid attention to me at all. I don't know what else to do to get his attention."
"We haven't been here that long, why don't you help him grill?" I reply hopefully.
She hugs me and goes over to the grill where Vinny is and asks if she an help. He starts showing her how to clean it and get the burgers and hot dogs ready. Greg's mom calls me in to help with the salad so I go help and Kelly follows. By the time we're sitting down to eat the sun is beginning to set and it's a beautiful night to be watching. I go and sit on the tree swing after I eat and just watch the sun go down. It's beautiful and sometimes no matter how many people I'm around I feel a bit lonely so the quiet is what I needed to get out of my head.
I have wonderful friends and family who love me, I'm in the middle of all the fun tonight, smile, no worrying. I say to myself as I swing gently. As the sun goes down it's getting a little chilly so I rub my arms a little to stay warm.
A few minutes go by and without warning, I'm gently wrapped in a cozy blanket. He rubs my arms and hugs me from behind, not saying a word. He loosens his arms and slowly pushes me, I turn around and to my surprise, it's Vinny, "Hey pretty girl, you warming up?"
"Yes, thank you," I say hesitantly, I know how much Lexi likes him, "what are you doing over here?"
"I saw you alone and you looked cold" he replied sweetly.
"I was, thank you, let's get back to the fire" I say, getting up and walking back.
"So what's your deal Molly? Greg said you aren't dating anyone and I couldn't believe my ears."
"Well, you heard right, between work, school, sports, clubs and going to my mom's most weekends, I don't have time to date." I tell him.
"I know you play volleyball, I saw your last game and I know you're in a bunch of clubs but a job too? Where's your mom live? Do you work a lot?" he really wants to know a lot, I don't know why he's so interested.
"I work a couple days a week and go to my mom's house about 30 minutes away most weekends so I'm not around for most of the parties and fun, this weekend I went early so I could have a girls night tonight. Why are you so interested in my life?" I say kindly so as to not seem rude. I don't want to be mean but Lexi wants this attention.
"Well Molly, you're interesting...and beautiful and kind and I wanted to learn more. You're a mystery to me, I know about Kelly from Scott and Lexi talks too much so I know more than I need to about her but you're quiet, and have kind eyes but that's all I know." he sounds so sincere and kind but I want Greg's attention, not his.
"You're so sweet, Vinny but I have to be honest, I'm interested in someone else and I know someone who would really love this attention from you. I think you're so kind and surprisingly gentle but I'm not interested in being more than friends right now."
"Oh pretty girl, you've got a friend then!" he gives me a huge bear hug and carries me to the fire, "and yes, Lexi likes me but she's making it way too easy, we'll see"
He sits me down on the chair next to Greg and walks over to Lexi. They start chatting and flirting. Lexi shouts "spin the bottle" and goes running inside. Vinny grabs a big blanket and spreads it out near the fire and motions us all over. Spin the bottle is usually a middle school game but why not, they all seem excited.
Vinny explains the rules and everyone agrees, Scott stand up and says "Kelly's mine, a peck is all you get fellas!" We all laugh and Lexi comes out with a bottle.
