Chapter 5
“Amazing Emory!” Wreath applauded the flame that I was able to conjure in just a matter of seconds. It's been a month and a half since I first started school here. I’ve grown a lot in just that time, although I was still struggling with my powers.
I wiped the sweat from my face and grabbed a water bottle from my backpack.
“So… any tips.”
“Well you could start with trying to form your power into an object,” Wreath pondered for a moment. “You know, try to form it in a sword or something.” I nodded along to Wreaths tid-bits.
So forming my power into an object. Elowen was able to create a bow and arrows with wind. It looked easy enough. Let’s put that on my To-Do list.
“Emory!”
I turned to see Elowen and Vellity walking into the training hall. They came to a stop in front of me.
“Do you want to come and spar with me?” Elowen asked. I agreed and headed to the other side of the training hall. Luckily Wreath was ok with hosting our little match. Every match that I’ve had with Elowen, she had won. But, it was still fun going up against her.
“Alright! Ready yourselves! Annnnnnnd GO!!”
I dashed forward with the sword in my hand and sliced down Elowen’s front. She dodged to the side by a thin air and conjured her bow and arrows. She jumped six feet away and pulled back on the string. The arrow sliced through the air and skinned my upper shoulder, ripping at my shirt.
I ignored the slight stinging from the cut and brought the hilt of my sword into her stomach. She let out a sharp exhale and retreated away from me. She analyzed me with deep breaths. Then she grinned and her lips moved up and down. Before I knew it a vortex of air was sent my way. I was blown back into the wall, my sword clanged a few feet away from me. Elowen was already dashing towards me by the time I had caught my breath. She formed a sword from the wind and brought back to swing at me.
“NO!”
I yelled out and brought my hands up to block the blade. There was ringing my ears and Elowen was suddenly blasted across the field. I gasped and studied the sabre which formed from electricity and fire. Gaping at the sword in my palms, my gaze slowly lifted to look across the field at Elowen. She was staggering over with the help of Vellity. They both looked surprised. I was just as surprised though. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
“What...was that?” Elowen asked. She was breathing heavily from the fight. I just shrugged my shoulders and looked the fiery sabre in my hands once again. This was amazing.
“Well whatever it was, it was amazing!” Wreath exclaimed. He clamped his hand around my neck and pulled me into a noogie. We all laughed.
“Sorry, Elowen, for knocking you off your feet.”
“Don’t sweat it!”

“So what about this soap,” Vellity sniffed an opened bottle of soap. “It smells like cherries!”
I shrugged and opened another bottle. “This one smells like cotton candy.”
Vellity snagged the bottle from my hand and inhaled its scent. “Yeah we’re getting this one.”
Vellity walked and started walking down the aisle. We were at the school’s built in store looking for more bath necessities. Elowen had used the rest of our body wash last night during a little prank was her and Orson had decided to have. Vellity was livid after seeing the state of the living room. There was soap and feathers everywhere. She forced Elowen and Orson to clean it up.
“Em, hurry up,” Vellity ushered me into the checkout line. The cashier slowly scanned our stuff and then rang us up. We walked in silence all the way back to the dorm room.
When we reached the room Orson and Elowen was passed out on the couch. The living room was clean though. I could hear the sizzling of bacon coming from the kitchen. They must have invited another friend here.
“Oh! Em, would you like some bacon?”
Rowan was standing behind the stove with a spatula in his hand. I nodded my head and stood beside him. He tapped his finger against his hips and flipped the bacon over before putting it on a plate.
“How was the grocery shopping?” He added more bacon to pan. I pondered on how shopping went. Pretty much it was boring, I don’t really like shopping.
“Eh, it was pretty boring,” I replied.
“I’ve heard you formed a weapon from your electric powers or something,” he mentioned.
“Yeah! I didn’t think I could do such a thing!” I exclaimed.
“Do you think you’ll be able to do it again?” Rowan handed me a plate of bacon and sat down at the counter.
“I really don’t know… that was the first time it has ever happened.”
“Well I’m sure you will be able to do it,” Rowan said. “Afterall, you’re Fluggood.”
That’s right I should contact my parents soon. The last time I called them was last month. Mom must be worried about me, she usually hogs the phone from everyone. I excused myself from the counter and headed to my room.
I took out my phone and tapped my moms name. The phone dialed two rings before my mom answered.
“Emmy! Honey, how are you? Are eating well? What about your school work?”
“Mom, I’m doing fine and I miss you guys,” I paced around my room.
Mom started going through all the things she has been doing lately. How she has joined Orlagh’s nitting club, and that she knitted the whole family on a quilt. She also started baking my cakes. I send a prayer to my siblings as they are the taste testers for those catastrophes.
“Mom is alright if I talk to dad right now,” I asked. “I have something important to tell him.”
“Oh of course honey. Hold on.”
There was muffling on the other side of the phone before my dad’s deep voice cut into the line.
“What did you need to tell me Emory, make it quick.”
“Yessir, well I’m able to form a sabre from electricity and fire now.”
“So the school was actually a good idea,” Dad murmured. “I still expect you to get even better, you are a very important asset to our plans.”
My dad hung up shortly after that, it wasn’t anything new. He always mentioned something about me being a big factor in whatever plans he had. My elder brother, Theoden, talked about it one day. He told me it probably has to do with me succeeding the family name. Which is strange because usually the eldest of the children succeed the family. And, I’m the middle child of seven children. But, it’s my dad, he can be confusing.
“Hey ...Emory, are you busy right now?” Vellity popped her head out from the crack of my door.
I exhaled through my nose and turned towards her. “Yeah, why?”
“Well the guys wanted to play a game, if you’re up for it come join us.”
I smiled. “Yeah I’ll come.!
