My mother was dying. He offered to save her — for a price.

"Get close to Aria Castellano. Become family. Tell me everything."

I infiltrated the Castellanos to pay for my mother's hospital bed. I was supposed to spy on them.

I didn't expect to be loved.

Aria became my sister. Her mother cooked for me. Her father protected me. For the first time, I had a real family.

So I chose them.

His revenge? He killed my mother and put a bullet in my chest, then threw me off a cliff to die like trash.

He thought Sofia was gone.

She crawled out of hell.

A ruthless Don of the city found me, saved me, and trained me. Not to heal — to kill.

*Now I'm back. Not as their spy. As their reckoning.*

He took my life and I will burn his empire.

Chapter1
Chapter 1: The Girl Who Had Everything They say money can't buy happiness. Sofia Marchetti, 19, had spent three years telling herself that was a lie rich people told to feel better. Then she met Aria Castellano. It was 7 AM on a Tuesday. Aria's penthouse kitchen smelled like vanilla and butter. Elena Castellano, in a flour-dusted apron that probably cost more than Sofia's entire wardrobe, was flipping pancakes and humming off-key. "Aria! Use a fork, you animal!" Elena laughed. Aria, 19, barefoot, hair in a messy bun, stole another pancake with her fingers and kissed her mother's cheek. "I'm quality control." Leonardo Castellano leaned against the counter in his tailored suit, tie loosened. He wasn't looking at his phone. He wasn't barking orders. He was just watching them. Smiling like a man who had already won. Sofia stood in the doorway holding two cheap street coffees going cold in her hands, and she felt it like a punch. This. Not the marble counters. Not the view of the city glittering below. This warmth. This ease. The way Elena tucked Aria's hair behind her ear without thinking. The way Leonardo slipped a small box of blueberries into Aria's backpack when he thought no one was looking. Sofia's mother had loved her too. But her love had always been tired. Worried. Don't get sick, we can't afford the doctor. Don't dream too big. Aria's parents loved her like the world was safe. "Aria pulled Sofia forward. "Sofi walked here in the cold because she's too stubborn for the bus. Make her eat." "Come here, my second daughter," Elena said, and pulled Sofia into a hug. Flour. Warmth. Vanilla. Sofia's throat closed. Second daughter. She had replayed that phrase in her head a hundred times, trying to make it sound fake. It never did. Elena meant it. And that made it worse. Why do you get this? Sofia thought, hugging back, breathing in the mother-smell she never had. Why are you so good? That was the thing Sofia hated most. Aria wasn't spoiled. She wasn't cruel. She wasn't even stupid about her privilege. Last week, Sofia had been short on rent for her tiny dorm. She'd lied, said she was fine. Aria had found out from someone else and paid it. When Sofia confronted her, furious and ashamed, Aria had just blinked. "You're my sister. Sisters don't let sisters get evicted. Why are you yelling?" No pity. No power trip. Just genuine confusion that Sofia would suffer alone. Sofia had wanted to scream. Because you're supposed to be a b***h! You're supposed to make me feel small so I can hate you properly! But Aria just smiled. That stupid, genuine smile. The one that made professors give her extensions, made baristas give her free drinks, made everyone lean in a little closer. It's not fair, Sofia thought now, sitting at their marble island, watching Aria lick pancake syrup off her thumb and laugh. I work ten times harder than you. I'm smarter than you. I had to bleed for everything you were handed. And still... you shine without trying. Aria caught her staring and grinned. "What?" "Nothing," Sofia said quickly. "You have syrup on your chin." Aria wiped the wrong spot. Sofia laughed despite herself and reached over to wipe it for her. Their eyes met. For a second, Sofia felt the old Sofia rise up like bile. The 16-year-old who wrote in her notebook: Get close. Make them trust me. Take it all. Then Aria said, "I'm glad you're here. Mornings suck without you." Simple. True. Sofia's hand trembled. Later, in Aria's bedroom, they lay on the rug between textbooks. Fairy lights glowed. Aria was talking about the future, as she always did, like it was a guaranteed thing. "When we graduate, I'm going to work for Dad, but like, actually work. And you're going to be my CFO because Dad says you have a better head than his whole board—" "Sofi?" Aria propped herself up. "You went quiet." Sofia was staring at the ceiling. She doesn't even hear how insane that sounds, she thought. Her dad offering me a future. Like it's nothing. "I'm just tired," Sofia whispered. Aria didn't push. She just rolled over, tucked her head against Sofia's shoulder like they were kids at a sleepover, and said, "Then rest. I've got you." I've got you. Sofia stared at the fairy lights until they blurred. You have no idea what it feels like to watch you be loved like this. To know you'll never have to wonder if you're enough. Your smile... it's real. That's why I can't stand it. If you were fake, I could dismiss you. But you're real, and the world rewards you for it, and I have to claw for scraps. Aria's breathing slowed. Asleep. Sofia carefully untangled herself and went to the balcony. Cold air bit her skin. She pulled out her phone. No new messages. Good. She looked back through the glass at Aria, curled under a blanket, Polaroid photos of the two of them taped to the wall above her bed. Laughing. Hugging. Sisters. Sofia whispered to the empty city: "You make it impossible not to love you. That's your fault." She didn't go back inside for a long time.
