Chapter 9: The Price of Silence The morning sun filtered through the heavy silk drapes of Aria's bedroom, casting long, pale ribbons of amber across the polished mahogany floor. It was the kind of light that belonged in a home where mornings were soft, predictable, and gentle. Beside Sofia, Aria was still fast asleep, one arm thrown lazily over the duvets, her fingers loosely curled around her silver smartphone. Even in sleep, a small, faint curve remained at the corner of her lips. Sofia lay completely rigid beside her, staring up at the ceiling. She hadn't slept. Not for a single second. Her neck was stiff, her eyes burned, and her left hand was tightly balled into a fist underneath the sheet. Resting against her hip, hidden beneath the folds of her nightgown, was her own phone. Powered off, dark, heavy as lead. Don't lie to me, Sofia. The five words repeated in her head with the precision of a ticking bomb. Aria stirred beside her, letting out a soft sigh. Sofia held her breath, waiting until the girl's breathing evened out. Slowly, she slid out from beneath the heavy duvet. Her feet hit the cold hardwood floor without a sound. She pulled on a soft ivory cardigan and slipped her dark phone into her pocket, casting one last glance at Aria - so warm, so untouched by the poison creeping through her world - and slipped out into the hallway. As she reached the ground floor, a warm aroma drifted toward her. Leonardo Castellano was sitting alone at the head of the long oak table, dressed in a crisp white shirt, his silk tie unknotted. Spread before him were three tablets, a steaming cup of espresso, and a stack of financial dossiers. "Sofia," Leonardo said, his voice deep and warm. "You're up early, little bird. I thought you girls would be sleeping until noon." "I'm a light sleeper, Mr. Castellano," she said softly. "Sit down. Please," he said, pouring a second cup of coffee and sliding it toward her. "How is your mother doing?" Leonardo asked. "I spoke with my chief of staff yesterday. He assured me that if you need her moved to a private suite at the university hospital, we can arrange transport by end of week. No expense spared, Sofia. I mean that." The words hit Sofia like a physical blow. Here was the man Victor wanted her to ruin. A man the tabloids called a cold, ruthless titan. Yet he sat here offering to move her dying mother to the best facility, expecting nothing in return except friendship for his daughter. "She's... stable, Mr. Castellano," Sofia choked out, keeping her gaze locked onto her cup. "Thank you. Truly." "It's not generosity, Sofia," Leonardo interrupted softly. "It's family. You've been in this house for barely a month, but look what you've done for my daughter. Aria hasn't smiled the way she smiled last night in years. In our world, safety and genuine trust are rarer than gold. Whatever you need for your mother, you have it." Tell him, a desperate voice screamed in her mind. Tell him about Victor. But Victor held the medical power of attorney over her mother's hospice. One call, and her mother's pumps would be turned off before Leonardo's security could start their engines. Sofia stood up, taking a small sip of bitter coffee before excusing herself. She needed air. Slipping through the glass doors into the cold mist of the private gardens, Sofia pulled her cardigan tight and walked rapidly toward the outer perimeter gate. As she neared the service gate, a figure stepped out from behind the tall boxwood hedge. Sofia flinched. "Easy," a voice whispered. Liam stood in the shadow of the stone archway. He didn't look like the charming photographer from the park. He wore a dark navy hoodie, exhaustion-heavy circles under his eyes. "What are you doing here?" she hissed, looking frantically over her shoulder. "If the security cameras spot you -" "The cameras on this side have a thirty-second blind spot during shift change at seven AM," Liam said quickly. "I know because Victor's team gave me the security layout." Sofia's eyes narrowed. "Get away from here, Liam." "I'm not here for Aria," Liam cut in, his voice cracking. He pulled out a small encrypted memory drive and held it out with a trembling hand. "I'm here because of the text you got last night." "How do you know about that?" Sofia whispered. "Did you tell Victor I was holding back?" "No! I didn't say a word about Singapore. I swear on my life!" "Then how does he know?" Sofia demanded. "Because he's not just using us, Sofia," Liam whispered. "Victor has a tap on the Castellano server lines. He knew Leonardo booked a private charter to Asia three days ago. He was testing you. He wanted to see if you would give up the destination voluntarily." Sofia felt as though the ground had given way beneath her. It was a trap. And she had walked right into it. "He knows you're changing, Sofia," Liam continued. "He sees the way you look at Aria. He sees the way I look at her." "I do see her!" Liam yelled in a choked whisper, tears welling. "I was supposed to plant tracking software on her cloud account and leave! But I couldn't do it." "What is that?" Sofia asked, nodding toward the drive. "It's the raw photo files from yesterday. Clean of any tracking malware. Give them to Aria. Tell her I had to leave town." "You're running?" "Victor's men checked my apartment an hour ago. I barely slipped out the fire escape. You need to fix this before he decides you're compromised too." Without another word, Liam pressed the cold metal drive into Sofia's hand and melted back into the fog, disappearing down the street. Sofia stood alone in the damp garden, the drive burning against her palm. With shaking fingers, she pulled the dark, turned-off phone from her pocket. She held the power button down. The screen lit up with a harsh white glare. The moment it connected to the tower, notifications flooded the screen. Three missed calls from an unlisted number. One alert from the municipal clinic. And a single, dark audio file sent from Victor's personal line at three in the morning. --- .
