LOUI'S POV
"Daddy, can you please help me text Sophie?" As she pulled at the bottom of my shirt, her large eyes begged me to pay attention to what she was doing.
It was the first time she had asked me to do this, and I had just returned home from work. Amazing. That woman had been able to secure the position of most importance in her heart. Now, I was nothing more than the envious uncle.
I took her into my arms and held her there. One of her arms was wrapped around my shoulder, and her little fingers were curled into the blouse I was wearing.
"Give me my kiss first." With my cheek extended, I leaned in closer.
After putting a gentle kiss on my lips, she looked at me with a triumphant smile and giggled. "Now, let’s text my friend."
While I was still holding her in my arms, I let out a sigh and sat down on the bed. "I do not understand how she won you over so fast."
I took my phone out of my pocket and carefully placed it on the bed before putting it away. "What do you want to say?"
"I miss you." As she waited for me to type, she smiled broadly.
An eyebrow was raised by me. "Andrea told me she misses you." I read while I was typing.
"But no, Daddy. You need only write, "I miss you." She appeared to be huffing as she crossed her arms across her chest. The little drama queen that I am.
A chuckle was repressed by me. "If I just write those three words, it will sound like I am the one who misses her."
In a sign of exasperation, she scrunched up her face. "Lying to a kid is a no-no!" It was as if she were the only adult in the room, as she gestured with her little finger at me.
It made me laugh. The phone in your hand is mine, sweetie. If I email her those words, she might infer that I am missing her. It is not you. Additionally, she can get the wrong impression.
"That is a good thing, Daddy!" Laughing, she covered her mouth with her hand.
I did a frown. "What?"
"I want to call her Mommy." While her voice was soft, it was resolute.
Every muscle in my body became rigid. "Absolutely not."
"You will love her one day." She shrugged, exuding an air of self-assurance.
I did a sigh. "Are you aware of the fact that you are truly remarkable? It's fine." In accordance with her instructions, I typed the message, "I miss you." It was sent.
After a brief pause, my phone began to buzz.
I took a quick look at the screen. My fingers hesitated before opening the message.
I miss you too.
Something in my chest became more constricted. Only for a fraction of a second did I wish that those words had been directed toward me.
Andrea gave the phone a quick glance. "Daddy, she certainly did not write down my name. It is clear that she intended it for both of us.
I made my eyes more narrow. "What are you up to, sweet pie?"
While I was reaching out to tickle her, she burst out laughing and avoided my touch.
Yes, Daddy, I do like her! This woman is extremely lovely and charming! "I would like for her to remain here with us."
Her laughter subsided, and she continued to look at me with a melancholy that struck me like a punch to the gut.
Dear Daddy, are you able to make that happen? For real?"
SOPHIE’S POV
'I miss you.'
I stared at the message on my screen, my brows drawing together. It came from the phone number that I had saved under the name "Princess Andrea." I knew better than to believe that a particular irritable man was the one who had sent it.
The concept, however, caused me to snort. Should he ever say those words to me, I would feel like the sky is falling.
Quickly, without giving it too much thought, I typed back, "I missed you too."
I added a smiley face and hit send.
There. Simple.
Also, it was not intended for him in any way.
Do you agree?
