The house had long fallen silent. Lucy had gone to bed after unsuccessfully trying to make sense of the whole situation and then unsuccessfully convince Bernard to get some rest too. Bernard eventually gave in, though not without reminding them one last time to lock every door and window before sleeping. Now, the living room sat in complete silence. Everyone had gone to bed. Everyone except Gwen. She sat curled up on the couch with her knees drawn against her chest, absentmindedly staring at the cold cup of tea Lucy had made for her earlier. It had long gone cold, yet she still held it between her hands, more for something to hold onto than because she intended to drink it. She couldn’t sleep. Every time she shut her eyes, she saw Miranda. The brilliant flash of light. The barrier.
