Children's stories told of a time when the rain fell from the sky on its own. According to the stories, the planet somehow knew it needed water and sent rain to make the trees and plants grow. Adults laugh at the stories now and pay rainmakers like you to water their crops. However, more frequently of late, headlines tell of wildfires plaguing the west, just like they had before the rainmakers stepped forward to save the people they once thought of as invaders. As the largest fire in history advances on your ancestral native lands, you step forward. Yet you immediately realize that this is no ordinary fire. It breathes with the heart of the blackest souls, the ancient enemy of your people, and is looking for the strongest warrior. The rain dancers have not done battle since before the gold rush, but this land belongs to you, and you won't let the fires consume what's left of your heritage. You just might need a little help.

Chapter 1: The Sky That Forgot How to Cry
To the children sitting by the glowing embers of the village fire, the legends sounded like fairy tales from a distant star. Elders spoke of an ancient age when grey clouds gathered over the mountains without human bidding, weeping cool water onto the thirsty earth below. In those forgotten times, the planet was said to possess its own living rhythm, breathing life into meadows and giant redwoods without needing a singer or a drum. To modern adults, however, such stories were nothing more than childish folklore, sweet myths to comfort the young before bedtime. Everyone knew that water did not fall freely from a silent sky; it had to be bought, summoned, and bargained for. Rainmakers like me spent their lives honing the intricate dance steps, memorizing the chant cadences, and burning sacred herbs just to coax a meager shower over a desperate farmer’s drying cornfield. It was grueling, exhausting work, but in a world where the atmosphere had gone completely numb, we were the only barrier between life and total starvation. Yet over the past few months, the delicate balance we maintained was fracturing. Headlines in the city newspapers screamed of unnatural heatwaves and relentless wildfires creeping across the western territories. These were not the gentle, regenerating burns of old, but voracious monsters that swallowed entire towns in hours, leaving behind nothing but scorched stone and grey ash. It felt as if the land itself was feverish, and no matter how many rainmakers gathered at the edges of the blazes, our dances could no longer put out the flames.
