Between Love and Pain

1101 Words
Location: Riverside Café – Afternoon Isla sat at a quiet corner of the café, her fingers gripping the edge of her cup. The air was thick with tension, her heart pounding in her chest. She had barely slept last night, replaying every moment she had shared with Ethan—both the beautiful and the heartbreaking ones. And now, she was here, waiting for him. The door opened, and her breath hitched when she saw him. Ethan. Dressed in a navy-blue coat, his eyes immediately found hers. There was hesitation in his steps, but also something else—determination. He walked over, stopping just before her. "Hey." His voice was low, careful. Isla inhaled sharply before nodding. "Sit." Ethan did, his fingers lacing together on the table. "Thank you for meeting me." She didn’t reply, instead cutting straight to the point. "Why now, Ethan? Why after all these years?" Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Because I was a coward before. Because I was selfish, and I hurt you. And… I can’t live with that regret anymore." Isla’s jaw clenched. "You think regret is enough? Do you have any idea what you did to me? How much you broke me?" Ethan flinched, his hands tightening into fists. "I loved you, Ethan. I loved you more than anything, and you left me like I meant nothing. No explanation. No closure. Just… gone." Tears stung her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Ethan swallowed hard. "I know. And if I could take it back—if I could go back and stop myself from walking away—I would. But I can’t. All I can do is tell you the truth now." Isla exhaled shakily. "Then tell me." Ethan leaned forward, his gaze never leaving hers. "Back then, I thought I was doing the right thing by leaving." His voice was raw. "I convinced myself that I was protecting you—from me, from my baggage, from my past." Isla scoffed. "And you never thought to ask me what I wanted?" Ethan shut his eyes briefly before nodding. "I was selfish. I know that now. But Isla, you were everything good in my life, and I was too broken to hold onto you." There was silence before he continued. "My marriage with Maya—it wasn’t just a failure. It destroyed me. I was someone who couldn’t trust love anymore. And when I fell for you, when I realized how much I needed you, I panicked. Because needing someone that much? It scared the hell out of me." Isla felt her breath catch. "So I ran," he admitted, voice shaking. "And I have regretted it every single day since." The sincerity in his eyes made Isla’s heart ache. But pain wasn’t something that disappeared overnight. "You don’t just get to walk back into my life and expect me to forget everything, Ethan." He nodded. "I don’t expect that. I just…" He exhaled. "I just need you to know that if I could change one thing in my life, it would be the way I left you." Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating. Then Isla whispered, "I don’t know if I can ever trust you again." Ethan’s face fell, but he nodded. "Then let me earn it." Just as Isla was about to respond, a voice interrupted them. "Isla?" Her blood ran cold. She turned around slowly, her eyes widening. Standing there, looking just as shocked as she felt, was Ryan—her ex-fiancé. Ethan’s expression darkened instantly as he stood up, his entire posture shifting into something protective. "Ryan," Isla breathed, her heart pounding. Ryan gave her a small smile. "It’s been a long time." Ethan’s jaw clenched. "What the hell are you doing here?" Ryan’s gaze flickered to Ethan before landing back on Isla. "I came back to fix things." Isla froze. Fix things? Ethan stepped forward. "She doesn’t need you to fix anything. You lost that chance a long time ago." Ryan smirked, tilting his head. "Funny, coming from the guy who did the same thing." Isla’s stomach twisted. The tension between the two men was suffocating. "I think we should talk," Ryan said, looking at Isla. "Alone." Ethan immediately shook his head. "That’s not happening." Isla’s heart pounded as she looked between them. She had never expected to see Ryan again, let alone hear him say that he wanted to fix things. "Ryan, this isn’t the time—" she started, but he cut her off. "Isla, please. Just one conversation." Ethan’s hands curled into fists. "She doesn’t owe you anything." Ryan met his glare with equal intensity. "And you do?" Isla swallowed, her mind spinning. She had just started to process Ethan’s return, and now Ryan was back too? Her past and present were colliding, and she had no idea what to do. Location: Isla’s Apartment – Night Hours later, Isla sat in her apartment, staring at her reflection in the window. Her conversation with Ryan had been… unexpected. "I made a mistake, Isla. Leaving you was the biggest regret of my life." She had heard those words before. From Ethan. Why did they both come back at the same time? Why now? A knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts. When she opened it, Ethan stood there, looking exhausted. "I don’t want to lose you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. Isla’s breath caught. "Ethan…" "I know Ryan’s return has complicated things," he admitted. "But I need you to know that I won’t make the same mistake again." His vulnerability made her chest ache. "I don’t know what to do," she admitted, her voice breaking. Ethan hesitated before stepping forward. "Then let me help you figure it out. No pressure, no expectations. Just… let me be here." For the first time in a long time, Isla felt her walls begin to crack. She didn’t know if she was ready to let him in again. But maybe, just maybe… she wasn’t ready to let him go either. --- Just as Isla was about to respond, her phone buzzed. A message. Unknown Number: "If you think Ethan is telling you the truth, you’re wrong. Meet me tomorrow. I have something you need to see." Isla’s heart dropped. Who was this? And what truth were they talking about? She looked up at Ethan, her mind spinning. "Ethan… is there something else you haven’t told me?" His expression shifted slightly, but he didn’t answer right away. And in that moment, Isla knew—something was still being kept from her. --- To be continued.......
