CHAPTER 6
“Oh, hell no. This isn’t going to happen” Amelia yelled as she bolted up from sleep.
Her night was plagued with nightmares of Thalrik and she was certain that he was doing it on purpose. He was a demon, after all, sneaking into her dreams would be basic level type of whatever magic he had.
She needed to speak with him. If he was going to keep freeloading off her in her grandmother’s cottage, he should at least allow her have a good night’s rest. Those were far and in between and VERY much needed.
As soon as it was bright enough to see, she had her bath and got dressed. Before she could leave, she met her mother by the door.
“You’re up early, Mom. Good morning.” Kat looked at her daughter for a while and then shook her head.
“You’re up early too. I would assume you’d still be in bed for a while seeing as you left the dinner table as though you were sick.” Amelia groaned. She should have known her mother would not let her live it down.
“I’m sorry.” She apologied but Kat shook her head.
“You shouldn’t apologize to me. You should tell Kyle you’re sorry. Poor lad felt like he was the problem. That was rude, Amelia.” Kat admonished.
“I’ll tell him I’m sorry when I see him again. I didn’t mean to be rude, it was just…” She trailed off. She knew she didn’t have any excuses to give her mother and she definitely was not going to apologize to Kyle because she would make sure she DID NOT see him. Anywhere.
Kat waved her off. “Where are you off to? It’s pretty early”
Amelia debated telling her mother the whole truth but advised against it. “Going to the cottage. I just want to go through her things to see if I wanted to keep anything before clearing the entire place out.”
“And you’re leaving this early? Why don’t you wait for a bit and I’ll go with you after breakfast.” Amelia shook her head at her mother’s words.
“Thank you, but I’d rather I do it alone. Also I want to go early so I can be back in time. I don’t want Ethan wondering where I was for too long. He can be a handful.” She responded.
“Oh, please. That boy is a darling. He’s never a handful. Anyway, go ahead and come back early, I’ll save you breakfast.”
With a kiss to the cheek and murmurs of thanks, Amelia left the house and got into her car.
The anger from earlier crept its way forward. How dare he try to invade her dreams? He had not only forced his way into her life, thanks grandmother, but was encroaching into her personal space.
Her sleep was the only time she had peace and now he was disrupting that. She was going to have to have a strong word with him.
As she approached the door, she realized it was once again unlocked even though she had locked up before she left the day before. She groaned. While she might not have anything of value in it coupled with the fact that there was a literal demon in the cottage, she hated how much it felt like disrespect to her grandmother when the door was left unlocked.
“Thalrik!!” She yelled as soon as she walked into the house. She didn’t know if he was bound to the room she had awaken him in but the cottage was small and she would find him soon enough.
“Yes, dear” was the answer that caused her to halt. It wasn’t the answer itself that shocked her but the voice with which it was said.
She forced her legs to move in the direction the answer had come from. Lounging on the chair in the living area of the cottage was Thalrik. Or more accurately, her grandmother. Her VERY dead grandmother who looked really alive in the moment.
“What…? How…?” Amelia didn’t know how to frame her questions. The shock of seeing her grandmother resonating in her bones. She knew deep down that that wasn’t her but the demon using her image and voice but it still did a lot to her system.
“Cat’s got your tongue, darling?” Those words, said in her grandmother’s voice, was enough to snap her out of whatever was happening to her.
“You f*****g bastard!!” She yelled and Thalrik tutted.
“That’s some serious language on you, young lady. You’re going to give your old grandmother a heart attack.” It was too much for Amelia. She couldn’t stand watching the demon use her grandmother’s image to mess with her senses.
She picked up a vase on the table beside her and chucked it in his direction. Before it could hit him, he was by her side.
She stared at him, his actual self, and tired to hit him with her fists.
“Woah, what the hell, Amy? You just tried to hurt me. What the f**k?!” He moved away from her until she stopped coming towards him. “I was just playing with you. It was only an harmless joke.”
“Don’t you dare f*****g play with me like that again or I swear it, I’ll do things to you that aren’t listed in that f*****g handbook that summoned you!” She pointed and shook her finger at him and he raised his hand in mock surrender.
“Kinky, I like that” He said, earning him a glare from her and he shrugged.
Thalrik knew he had pissed her off. He could tell she wasn’t easily annoyed but he had hoped seeing her grandmother once more, even the fake version of her would have cheered her up a little. A lot of people would have liked that but apparently not her.
The silence stretched for a bit and he decided to try to lift the mood once more.
“So…why are you back so soon?” He asked as he stalked towards her, stopping in front of her and lifting her chin with two of his fingers. “Missing me already?”
This time, Amelia was sure she was going to kill him.
