It definitely took all of her strength not to kill him where her were standing. Amelia took a deep breath And closed her eyes for a moment.
“I need to talk to you” she said, opening her to see that he was still standing very close to her. “ can you back up a little please?“
He obliged. “ oh we are talking now? I thought you said you never want to have anything to do with me again. I could’ve sworn you were going to pretend I did not exist” He teased.
Amelia choose to ignore his words. “ I’m going to need you to stop doing what you did overnight.”
He raised a brow at her. “I haven’t even done half of what I want to do to you, Amy.”
“See! This is the problem. I don’t like this. I need you to get out of my grandmother’s cottage. Out of my life. I don’t want you here neither do I want this situation we have going on. I have too much to deal with already.” He could tell she was really annoyed. It seemed like all he had been doing since he arrived was piss her off. She was too wound up.
“Amy, while I would love to grant your wish, I’m not a genie. I can’t leave, not until the new year’s. Not even if you and I want it so badly you would summon another demon to send me away. I. Can’t. Leave.”
“There has to be a way. There must be something…” Thalrik interrupted her.
“Well, there IS another way…” he said suggestively.
“No! No, Thalrik. I will NOT be giving you a human sacrifice. How cruel do you think I am?” She said to his face and be shrugged.
“You’re the one who wanted an option and I gave it!” Before Amelia could respond, a shrill sound filled the room.
Amelia raised a finger to silence Thalrik when she Saw the caller ID. She indicated for him to be silent as she picked up the call.
“ Amelia, will you be coming back anytime soon?“ Kat’s Voice came from the phone.
“Yes, mom. Do you need anything?“ Amelia asked, watching Thalrik from the corner of her eyes. He looked like he was bored from waiting for her to finish up the call.
“Oh, good. Can you run a few errands for me? I’ll send you a list of what to get. Don’t be late, I need some of them for breakfast.” The call ended and a text came in a few seconds later. It looked like she might have to go into town for some of them.
Seeing as talking to Thalrik was practically futile, Amelia turned and left the cottage. She was going to try another time.
Thalrik wanted to ask where she was going to but realized it was none of his business so he let her go and continued wandering about the house trying to see if he can see anything too hold his attention until she came by again.
Amelia decided to go by the grocery store first since it was further and she would get the rest of the stuff on her way back.
Just us she was about to step into the store, she bumped into someone. The person reached out to steady her before she fell.
“Thank you…” She started to say when she looked up and stared into Kyle’s face. She jumped and pushed herself off him.
“Sorry about that.” She muttered she ran into the store. Kyle went after her, unwilling to let her run away from him this time.
“Amelia, wait.” He said as he closed in on her. They were beginning to attract stares and that was the last thing he wanted.
She slowed down and waited until he got to her. “I don’t there’s anything for us to talk about so I don’t know why you followed me.”
“I just want to know why you’re avoiding me.” He said, trying to get her to look at him.
She shook her head, staring at a display on his left. “I’m not avoiding you. We had dinner together yesterday, remember?”
“Yes, one where you barely said a word to me throughout and ran away before it was completely finished and just now, you tried to run away again. You can’t even look at me in the face, Amelia.” His words caused her to finally look at him.
“I’m too busy to catch up with you, Kyle.” She said and started to walk away but he matched her pace.
“Well, you can be busy and talk to me at the same time. I know you’re very good at multitasking.”
Amelia groaned. It seemed there was no way to shake him off so she walked silently beside him, picking out the items on her list as he kept trying to make conversation.
Once she was done, she headed to the till where he insisted on paying for her things and helped her carry the bags.
During the walk to her car, they finally got talking or rather, she finally started responding to him.
They called about everything but their past. She told him about living in the city. She told him about Greg and how ugly her divorce proceedings was. She told him about Ethan.
Kyle was a good listener and he knew if he interrupted her, she was probably going to clam up again. He could tell she was getting comfortable with him.
By the time they got to her car, Amelia didn’t feel the need to bolt from him.
“Thank you for your help, Kyle.” She said as she put the groceries in the back seat of the car. She opened the front door but didn’t step inside.
“It’s nothing, really. I’m just glad I was able to talk to you.” He said, stepping in only a little closer.
“Me too.” They both lapsed into a comfortable silence only to be broken by Amelia. “Well, I have to get going now. I need to deliver these to mom for breakfast.”
He nodded and moved away from the door as she got in. She started to drive, waving goodbye to him.
She watched through the rearview as he continued to watch her drive off.
A ghost of a smile was on her face when she thought to herself. Maybe we can be friends again. Just friends.
