Friend

Forrest’s POV “No, Forrest.” She choked out, sounding like a wilted flower . “I won’t reject you. Not now and maybe not ever.” Those words probably should have been reassuring for me, but they honestly made it worse. Maybe? God I hope not, I’m not sure how I would bear this sort of pain. I feel as though in my short time on this earth I had been through plenty. This was my best friend, we should be over joyed right now. I was rigid just imagining what that clown must have done to my sweet Lilith. Rather than upset her any further and prodding her, I simply walked out of her room. I wouldn’t push her or force her, she too must have been through more than enough. Midnight, my wolf, was howling in my head loudly enough to induce a headache. He desperately wanted to go and hold our mate, I knew he could communicate with Astrid regardless of our closeness now. Then I felt it hit me like a train, as my lungs suddenly felt heavier. Like I could feel them as it became harder for me to properly inhale. The panic I always feel in this moment always causes me to start breathing faster, desperately trying to breathe. My chest starts to ache and my head starts to spin from the hyper ventilation. “You’ve got to relax Forrest, mate can feel this.” Midnight whined in my head. I didn’t respond to him, rather began to focus on my breathing. In and out, slow down. Slowly I began to collect myself, no wishing for Lilith to feel any of this. When I felt collected enough I took off towards the woods by the pack house for a run. Midnight was feeling pent up and when I made him promise not to go back toward Lilith I stripped my clothes off and released him. Without missing a beat, he darted off towards the lake we had been to as kids. We had spent countless summers splashing and swimming in it when we got the time. It was a very warm and welcome memory. Suddenly midnight slowed down, to barley a jog, I wasn’t sure why until I smelled it. I could smell our little mate catching up long before I saw her. When I did see her, she pounced on top of me. We rolled a bit from her pounce and I ended up on my back with her over my body. Midnight lifted our head, showing her our neck in an act of submission. To say I was as shocked as she seemed to be was an understatement. “Why did you do that?” I asked my wolf. “Mate won’t be afraid if we don’t seem to be a threat.” He explained briefly, still just staring at the top of her head. She wouldn’t look at us this whole time, I was suspicious that this was Lilith’s wolf behaving rashly rather than her own will. I felt the sudden sensation of her bones popping and watched as she shifted back human. She was stark naked laying on top of me. I too shifted back to my human form, wrapping my arms around her smaller frame protectively. I doubted anyone would be out here watching, but I would kill anyone I caught looking at her. “Look at me.” I whispered to her, she stayed very still for a few seconds. When she did look up at me, I was met with deep black eyes rather than Lilith’s beautiful blue ones. I had been right, she must have been unable to convince Lilith to come to me. This all has to be just as hard in Astrid as it was for my wolf and I. We had a pull that was hard to deny, but I had to respect my best friend over my animalistic tendencies. “It’s not Lilith, midnight.” I whispered aloud, hoping he would come to his senses a bit. As a person I respected Lilith and her wolf equally, I would want both of them to be in agreement on our relationship. However I also understand that midnight doesn’t think in such a way, he is primal and instinctive. We balanced each other out in certain ways and this would likely be what kept Lilith safe from us. “I want you though, even if she doesn’t.” What she said stung at my chest a bit. Did Lilith really not like me? I sighed softly. “I know you do Astrid, but she deserves time to process all the things happening right now. She would never forgive either of us if we are hasty.” I explained to her gently. Forcing any sort of thing she didn’t want would only make this all worse. I’m sure that’s why she’s so scared in the first place, goddess only knows what Jackson subjected her to. “I know..I just want to be near you.” She pleaded, sounding so desperate. Her voice was starting to drive me a bit crazy, but I contained myself. If I had nothing else, I did have self control. I wanted to ask Astrid in this moment what had happened to them all these years. The last 4 years I had pondered what became of my dear friend. Now I obviously was concluding that it had been absolutely nothing positive. My chest throbbed at the idea of Lilith in any sort of turmoil. One day I swear I will make all of it up to her. This was in no way my fault, but she deserved nothing but peace and comfort for the remainder of her days. “Let her out, Astrid.” I finally pleaded softly, running my fingers through her soft, silky hair. Astrid whined but didn’t disobey. I could tell when they had switched fully. Astrid had been very relaxed and still in my embrace, but Lilith seemed more rigid and fidgety. Like she was uncomfortable with my touch. Lilith slowly started to cover herself with her arms and legs, hiding from me. Obviously I had snuck a few glances, but I truly was trying to remain respectful to her modesty. I sighed softly and averted my eyes from her general direction. Midnight was seeking control again, im sure she could see our eyes mixing colors as he tried. I kept him as contained as I could though, hoping she felt safe here. Regardless she peeled her body off of mine, making me instantly feel cold at the loss of her touch. I held in my whine or protest, letting her go. Instead I tried to focus on keeping midnight at bay. “My clothes are back by the wood line, I can give them to you.” I offered, midnight kept shifting our eyes to her hardly covered body and I would shift them back away. He was no better than a dog for a steak. That’s when I caught her staring me down. Her eyes were taking me in and I still had made no effort to cover myself from her. “If she wants to look at our devilishly handsome body let her” Midnight snickered. I found myself chuckling at his comment which seemed to jar her from whatever she was thinking about. That’s when I smelled it, her sweet arousal. I thought for a moment my head would explode. There was little left I could do to contain my wolf, he was going absolutely feral trying to get out. For a moment I could see her fear flashing in her soft blue eyes. “Lilith..you need to go.” I choked out, praying she would run as midnight took control from me. “Please leave her alone, she’s scared man.” I begged him, doing my best to restrain our limbs from moving to follow her. She darted off into the woods and we only made one step after her. I was able to hold him away long enough for her to flee. I knew there wasn’t much control over such an animalistic instinct, but it kind of freaked me out to behave in such a beastly way. After she was gone I plopped back down on the ground and stared off across the lake, watching the water lap and splash along the shore. I wanted all of this to have gone differently. When we found our mate I thought everything would be perfect and we would clock just like everyone else. Like fireworks exploding as we kissed, marked, and mated each other. I could already feel what a wild ride this would be. A snapping stick behind me caught my attention and I snapped my head around. Behind me was Lilith’s mother, looking a bit distressed. “Luna? What’re you doing out here?” I stood and went to her side, grabbing her arm gently. “I used to come here when I missed her too.” She’s started, seeming to steady herself a bit. “I could see you out here too, Forrest.” “I did miss her, that was my best friend.” I nodded, unable to fathom what losing a child must feel like for her. “And she was my daughter. Her father never stopped trying to find and protect her. In some ways I guess he was successful.” She whispered, looking out across the water looking rather forlorn. “Why did you hide who her real father was for all this time? Surely you knew.” I grew the courage to question her, I needed answers. “To protect her. There are things she doesn’t know or understand about her real father. People have been after that bloodline for generations trying to extinguish it. Ezra agreed with me that concealing his childrens existences was in everyone’s best interest.” She explained, wrapping her arms around herself. “Why didn’t you do more to find her? Surely you suspected the alpha had something to do with it?” I continued. “She was safer there than here. He was catching on that they weren’t his, and I think he was trying to bate Ezra to use his powers.” She fumbled a bit on her words, whispering the end. “Powers? What do you mean?” I was really lost now. “Her father is a hybrid…with a witch” she finally admitted, staring down at her hands. I gasped. This would all make tons of sense in retrospect. Her ability to communicate her emotions and vision so well would be easy with magical gifts. However, now I was even more worried for her safety. If or when word got out, goddess only knows what people would do to have her as a weapon. A wolf and witch hybrid would be exceptionally powerful both hand to hand and in distant situations. I suddenly felt to urge to go to my mate, wanting to have my eyes on her to ensure she was safe. As I went to walk away, her mother grabbed my arm, stopping me. “Lilith doesn’t know this yet, and neither does anyone other than us, her real dad, and now Luke. It is best if you behave normally.” She cautioned, finally meeting my eyes. “Why aren’t you watching her closer? Anyone could discover her!” I protested, starting to fidget and pace a bit. “You’re telling me the Lilith who challenged an alpha two days ago needs our protection?” She raised a brow, knowing she made her point. “I mean…I get it Luna Lily. But she’s my mate, you surely worry for Ezra too.” I whined, hoping she would understand. “I do, but he’s tough too. And he is also looking out for your dear Lilith. He’s the reason she has yet to birth a pup.” Those words felt like both a slap and a relief. “Is she infertile? Or what happened?” I was curious, and a bit confused. “If she so chooses to carry your pup she is able. He simply blocked anyone besides her true mate from reproducing with her. So she didn’t end up with a child like Liam, that isn’t her mates.” She sighed and patted my arm. I didn’t really know how to respond to this, but it did make perfect sense. That’s why Alpha Luke was so interested and involved in Liam while the other two were cast aside. It also made the fact she hadn’t been impregnated by a ridiculously fertile alpha a bit more plausible. “I’m glad he was able to. Seeing your mate marked by another is a pain hard to describe. I can only imagine a child.” I sighed, trying to count my lucky stars on this one. “Imagine how her father feels. At least two of mine were his. After Liam was when he perfected his little trick.” She explained, but nodded to tell me I could leave her presence. With that I walked away, headed back to the pack house. It was now that I realized I was still in fact, nude. A dark blush crept over my face as I walked away, though Lily seemed very unbothered by my state. That must be why I hadn’t noticed before. I shifted to my wolf so I could get back to my room for clothes. I couldn’t believe I just had such an intimate conversation with my mates mother while nude. She would probably be so mad if she ever found out about it. Perhaps that’s why the luna was so willing to share such information with me so causally. Upon returning to my room, I threw on a random T-shirt and work out shorts. Once clothed, I began to walk to Lilith’s room. I wouldn’t disturb her sleep, I simply wished to ensure she made it back. Cautiously I opened her door and peaked in at her. She laid passes out in her bed, curled around a pillow. Her arms were clinging around the boy pillow and she had one leg draped over it. Never in my life had I envied An inanimate object, but seeing her holding it in such a way had me very jealous. She looked so peaceful in her sleep, I hoped her dreams were calm tonight, she needed the rest. A gently cough behind me made me jump, suddenly standing at attention. Behind me stood a very perplexed looking Ezra. He stood with his arms crossed and eyebrow raised, staring me up and down. As softly as I could I closed Lilith’s door and stared back at him. “And what’re you doing creeping into my daughters room at this hour?” He demanded very sternly but something about his voice was so gentle. “I wanted to ensure she made it to bed, she uh..” I stumbled, debating how to explain our situation to him. “I heard there’s been a lot of nudity today. First my daughter and then my mate? Not cool man.” He teased, pushing my shoulder a bit aggressively. I broke out in a bit of a cold sweat at his comment. He already knew about everything that had happened tonight and seemed rightfully irritated by my promiscuous behavior. I looked away from him and nodded, accepting my fate to be ridiculed for this. “I’m sorry I didn’t really mean to-“ he cut me off. “It’s alright Forrest, im simply giving you a hard time. Your brains a little fried right now by everything happening.” He raised his hand toward me as if to tell me to calm down. I sighed, a bit relieved. “But If you are ever undressed in front of Lily again I’ll kill you.” He warned me, now very serious again. “Yes sir, I swear it won’t. It was a mistake!” I rambled, grateful he wasn’t more angry with me. I went to take my leave, I myself was rather tired from todays events. There was a lot of topics I needed to take the time and think over to come to terms with. I found my mate, and things were far more complicated than they were before. She would need my support, but I needed hers too. I simply hoped she would come to me and accept it. “Oh and Forrest?” He called. “Yes sir?” I turned back to face him again. “Don’t forget that before she was your mate, she was your friend.”
