I followed them begrudgingly out of the house and into a waiting jeep where I sat at the back with one of them who was noticeably sitting as far away from me as he could.
I rolled my eyes at his childishness then put on my headphones and let myself hide in the music while the car drove further into the estate then came to an abrupt stop by the side of the road. I looked out the window, wondering why we had stopped out of nowhere as i could not see any buildings when suddenly I felt my headphones being pulled off my head from the front.
“Hey stop that.” I protested angrily and tried to grab for it but he held it out of my reach and stared at me deadpan, I turned to see all of them were staring at me but instead of feeling fear I felt a frisson of delight crawl up my spine.
“We don’t want you here.” The one driving growled and I chuckled and he looked surprised at my reaction.
“You hillbillies are going to have to do better than that, I have seen scarier people than you, you don’t even begin to scratch the surface. You should work on your threatening voice, it broke a little.” I sneered
“Hill.. hillbil.. did she just..” sputtered the driver.
“I have absolutely no interest in intruding on your perfect little family life but I have no choice. If it bothers you so much then maybe you should complain to Zach and get him to divorce my mother if you can. I understand that you wittle boys hate to share daddy’s affection and need him all to yourselves.”
I smiled with saccharine sweetness while my eyes dared them and we engaged in a battle of wills that I was determined not to lose then I grabbed my headphones out of the grabber’s slack hands and put it on, effectively blocking them all out.
I felt the car get back on the road with some aggressiveness and I smiled secretly, they must be used to oppressing everyone they wanted to and thought that I would be easy pickings. Well I would not let anyone cower me no matter how gorgeous they looked even when they were trying to be menacing, they would have to do much more than that.
In a short while we stopped in the parking lot in front of a school building. I climbed down and was looking at the building which honestly looked better than my former school when three athletic looking cheerleader type girls with their little skirts and little crop tops walked out of a little convertible and came towards where I stood.
I watched a little enviously at their carefree demeanor, their bouncy hair and shiny skin seemed to glimmer in the morning sun and i once again wondered how it would feel to be able to live without needing a bra. They ignored my existence and went to the triplets and jumped on one each, devouring their faces in kisses that made me feel sick. How predictable, the cute boys dating the perfect looking cheerleaders.
“Who is that?” Only when one of the girls stopped shoving her tongue down one of the triplet’s throat did she stop long enough to eye me dismissively.
“She’s no one babe.” He said and went back to kissing her.
I shrugged and left them there and headed into the building, I knew better than to think that they would bother showing me around the school.
As I walked by everyone I passed stopped and turned to stare at me then whisper. I expected some glances as the new girl but this reaction was exaggerated. I noticed that everyone in this school looked athletic and I briefly wondered if they had special attention for sports activities because they all looked extremely fit.
“Excuse me..” I tried to stop a girl walking past me in the hallway to ask for directions to the principal’s office but she simply ignored me like I was not there.
“How rude.” I muttered and continued walking.
After I tried stopping two more people and they reacted in the same way as the first person I started to realize something was amiss, I would think that maybe I had been sent to a school for non verbal people but I could see people laughing and having conversations with each other but definitely not trying to catch my eye.
As I stood in exasperation just about ready to burst into tears and wondering how I was going to deal with classes when I could not find the principal’s office and register when someone tapped my shoulder.
I whirled around to see a tall boy with a friendly smile and intense brown eyes standing before me.
“Are you new here?” He asked and I nodded.
“I’m Zeke, I’m new too.” He said and extended his hand towards me and I shook him.
“I’m Lia.” I said, grateful that someone was talking to me, I noticed the looks we were getting.
“Do you want me to show you the principal’s office?” He asked and I nodded gratefully.
“What is up with the students in this school? They are so impolite. I don’t know what I would have done if you did not come along.”
“I guess they are just wary about new students, they don’t seem to get a lot of those around here.”
“I’ll say, this far out from everyone I am really surprised that there is a school this big here.”
“What grade are you in?”
“Eleventh grade.”
“Super, so am I, I will just wait for you to be done so that I can show you our homeroom.”
“Oh thank you so much, you have been such great help.”
I went into the office with the “Principal” plague on the door and came back and saw the triplets outside and smothered the urge to groan at their smoldering eyes.
“I’m done Zeke, we can go now.” I said and ignored them as I walked past.
“Do you know those guys?” Zeke asked, turning to look back. I did not need to ask to know they were staring at me, I could almost feel six holes in my back.
“Unnecessary baggage.” I answered and when Zeke saw that I was not going to give any additional explanation he thankfully kept quiet.
By the end of the school day Zeke asked me how I was getting home and I assured him that I was fine on my own and bade him goodbye. As I walked to the car park I pondered on my classmates behavior, by now I was sure that I was not imagining it, they were being standoffish towards me, all of them except Zeke who shared a couple of classes with me and was friendly.
The hope I had tried to cling onto that it was just another couple of years and I would be able to survive was quickly dwindling, I doubted very much that I would survive even just an entire month in this place and I was determined more than ever to get out of here, anything had to be better than this torture.
As I drew closer to where the car had been parked I heard chatter and I hesitated before putting a blank face on and turning round the corner.
The triplets were there alright along with a horde of teenagers who turned to look at me as I came into view. I watched as a girl who had her arms around one whispered into his ear and they both chuckled before turning to look at me. I wordlessly opened the door and climbed in and sat ignoring them
