I woke up with moon light from the morning steaming in through the window, and as i stared at the strange ceiling i was confused about where I was then I remembered everything that had happened and my heart sank. With a sigh i got up to pee then heard branches snap from somewhere outside and without thinking I walked towards the open window to see what it was and down by a tree a little distance away from the house stood a massive white animal and i leaned out of my window to get a better look and realized that it was a wolf staring in the direction of my room, as i stared and wondered what it was looking at the moonlight reflected on it's eyes and the color changed to a feral glassy yellow, a chill ran through my body as i jumped back in fright as i realized that i was what the beast was staring at.
For some reason it felt like the wolf was trying to communicate with me and i felt transfixed to the spot unable to tear myself away. Suddenly the wolf bounded away and disappeared into the shadows.
I put my hand over my thundering heart and breathed in and out while hurriedly closing the windows and backing away then i heard a howl far off, What kind of wolf was that? I knew that wolves were supposed to be bigger than dogs but this one seemed to be at least four feet, that had to be abnormal. I quickly ran back into the bed, all thoughts of peeing gone right out of my body.
I tried to comfort myself with the fact that there were forests around so it made sense that animals would be around and despite the fear coursing through my mind I fell asleep once more and I did not wake up until my alarm rang in the morning.
I got up and went into the bathroom where after a bit of trial and error I figured out how to use the shower while musing to myself how ridiculous it was that a shower would need so many complicated looking knobs.
I picked out a cute blue top and baggy jeans with a pair of slightly scruffy converse sneakers then I brushed my hair and considered putting it up in a ponytail then decided to let it be free and I finished up with some body spray and pink lipgloss.
As i eyed my image in the mirror my heart sank as I wondered how Alicia was doing, she was probably getting ready right now to go to the bus stop like we used to do but this time without me. The thought of going to a new school was daunting, i pressed my eyes tight against all the ugly memories but i could not help feeling scared, i would have to deal with it as best as i could and hope for the best.
With a sigh I picked up my bag and slung it across my shoulder before leaving the room and heading to the kitchen to see everyone was already at the dining table eating.
“Hey there, how did you enjoy sleeping in your new room?” Zachary asked.
“It was fine.” I mumbled then sat on the vacant seat before dishing waffles, eggs and bacon unto my plate and pouring some orange juice in a glass.
“Can I have the syrup please.” I asked and one of the boys picked up the bottle and handed it to me. As I looked at him I had a sudden recollection of what had happened to me in the middle of the night.
“Do you happen to have wild animals around here? Like wolves and bears, maybe bobcats?” I turned to Zachary and the boys choked while my mom and Zachary stopped eating and stared at me.
“Why do you ask? are you scared of seeing some while you live here?” Zachary asked carefully.
“Well I saw what I think was a wolf outside my window in the middle of the night, it was huge. I mean like really huge.” I said while pouring the syrup over my waffles.
“You know there is a forest all around, there is bound to be wild animals that might wander too close sometimes.” Mom said and i nodded.
“That does not happen, the guards patrol and make sure that the streets are safe for us.” Zachary seemed in a rush to assure me. I looked up and saw the boys glance at each other conspiratorially.
“That wolf did look dangerous, like it would have me for dinner.” I insisted.
Now that Zachary had said there was no danger of wild animals i felt a little ridiculous, maybe i had seen shadows and my over active imagination had played tricks on me. He was right, this was a gated residential and there was no way that rich people would build houses like the ones here and allow wild animals run around casually potentially harming people.
“I assure you there is nothing of that kind around here but just to make you feel better i will look into that and make sure you are not bothered again.” Zachary said and I wondered how he intended to accomplish that, maybe he would tell the wolf nicely not to come around anymore.
At that ridiculous thought I snorted with laugher and almost choked on the food i was eating and everyone turned to stare at me.
“When you get back from school today Zachary wants us to go shopping together.” Mom said gleefully.
“There is a mall to be found in this neck of the woods?” I asked sarcastically and mom sighed in exasperation.
While Zachary looked amused and the triplets looked anything but. They finished before I did and stood up conspicuously waiting for me, and I decided that I would take my time by eating even slower in order to piss them off even more.
“Li, the boys are waiting and it is your first day at school, you don’t want to be late, hurry and finish up.” She scolded, making me reluctantly get up and follow the boys out of the house.
'I guess it is now or never' eating slowly was not going to stop what was coming, all i could d was hope that before the bullies got to me i would find a way to make myself which was near impossible because not only was i a new student but i somehow attracted a lot of negative attention unprovoked.
