Four Hours to save her
Harlan Vor spat a bloody molar onto the canvas between Aven's bare feet. He wiped his mouth with the back of his taped forearm, grinning through the split skin of his lip. Two rounds of her kicks had cracked his ribs, but the heavyweight still had fifty pounds on her. "You should have stayed down in the second, girl," Harlan rasped, his deep voice carrying over the roaring crowd. "You're not walking out of round three." Aven Cross did not answer him. She kept her chin down, her hands raised in a tight guard, and breathed slowly through the black neoprene fight mask covering the lower half of her face. Above the steel cage, the red digits on the arena wall read 1:18 AM. That left her four hours and forty-two minutes to deliver fifty thousand dollars in cash to the front desk at Mercer Pediatric Critical Care. If she did not hand over the full payment before the six o'clock morning shift change, the clinic would shut down the oxygen matrix keeping four-year-old Rhea alive. Outside the cage, the referee pulled the heavy chain tight through the iron latch and snapped an industrial padlock shut, sealing them in for the final round. "Updated terms from the private box!" the announcer yelled into his microphone from the floor below, pointing up at the dark glass suite hanging over the rafters. "An extra twenty thousand to Harlan if she leaves this pit on a stretcher!" The crowd cheered, slamming their hands against the chain-link fence until the whole cage shook. Aven tightened the muscles in her legs and centered her balance on the balls of her feet. Harlan charged forward with a heavy overhand right that aimed directly for her jaw. Aven lowered her stance, ducked under the punch, and drove her shoulder straight into his lead hip to disrupt his forward momentum. The big man grunted, driving a downward elbow into her shoulder blade, but she had already wrapped her arms around his waist. She threw her right leg over his thigh, locked her left calf behind his knee, and fell backward to pull his two-hundred-and-thirty-pound frame to the floor. Before he could turn his hips to posture up, she trapped his heel securely beneath her armpit and twisted her torso to invert the joint. "Tap, Harlan," Aven said through her mask, tightening her grip around his Achilles tendon. "Tap now." Harlan cursed and threw a blind fist toward her head, catching the side of her temple with his knuckles. Aven did not hesitate. She arched her back, drove her hips upward, and cranked his trapped heel hard to the left until his knee ligaments snapped with an audible pop. Harlan let out a loud scream, slapped the bloodstained canvas twice with an open hand, and went completely limp as the pain knocked him unconscious. The roar in the arena died instantly. Aven released the broken leg, stood up, and backed against the chain-link fence while she pulled air into her lungs. Up in the shadows of the mezzanine, the black one-way glass of the luxury box cleared as the interior lights came on. A tall man stood with both palms pressed flat against the glass, staring directly down into the ring. Aven stopped breathing. Kallan Vex stood fifty feet above her in a tailored dark suit, his jaw tight and his dark eyes locked straight onto her. He had not come to this illegal basement to watch an underground bout; he was here to buy out the venue and absorb the circuit into Vex Combat Global. Her stomach dropped as she realized why he was staring. Kallan had recognized the inverted heel hook setup she had just used on Harlan. It was the exact grappling chain Kallan had developed and drilled into her five years ago when he was her head coach, right before she packed her bag and fled into the night. Down by the cage door, the referee did not raise her hand to declare the win. Four private security guards in black tactical gear stepped in front of the locked gate, keeping their hands resting on their sidearms. The promoter stood behind them, holding the black duffle bag containing her prize money against his chest. "Unlock the door," Aven called out, wiping the sweat from her eyes. "Give me the purse. The fight is over." The promoter looked up toward the glass suite, shook his head, and backed away from the gate. "Mr. Vex wants a word before anyone leaves," the promoter said. "Nobody touches the cash until he clears the result." Aven looked up at the wall clock again. It was 1:25 AM. Rhea was lying in a cold ICU bed across town, breathing through a plastic tube while the monitors tracked every weak beat of her heart. Every minute she lost inside this basement brought her daughter closer to a total shutdown. Aven stepped to the edge of the canvas, reached between the steel bars, and yanked the live microphone out of the announcer's hand. She pulled the neoprene mask down to her neck, letting her face show under the arena lights for the first time in five years. "You want to talk about my submission, Kallan?" Aven's voice boomed through the loudspeakers, silencing the entire room. "Bring my money down here yourself, or come take it out of the cage." The crowd went dead quiet. In the suite above, Kallan did not blink. He pushed away from the glass, turned toward the private exit, and walked out of the room. Ten seconds later, the iron padlock on the cage gate rattled. The security guards stepped aside, lowering their heads as the heavy chain hit the concrete floor with a loud clang. The steel door swung open. Kallan Vex stepped into the cage, his leather shoes stepping through the chalk and blood on the canvas without slowing down. He stopped five feet in front of her, his broad shoulders blocking the open door and cutting off her only path out of the arena. "Five years, Aven," Kallan said, his voice deep, calm, and dangerous. "And you are still breaking bones in basements for scraps." "Give me the duffle," Aven said, raising her hands to keep him from stepping closer. "I need the cash right now." Kallan took a slow step forward, his eyes traveling down from her face to the white athletic wrap on her left wrist. The tape had torn away during the grapple on the floor, fully exposing the bright pink plastic hospital band fastened around her skin. Kallan's eyes fixed on the black letters printed across the plastic tag: PATIENT: RHEA CROSS — AGE 4 — MERCER PEDIATRIC ICU.
