~Liliana~
~Liliana!!!~
“Liliana? Liliana, are you okay?” Mrs. Anderson looked at Liliana. Her auburn brown hair was pulled up into a bun, her green eyes, that were more vibrant due to her smokey eyeshadow, stared at her with concern and her red full lips were in a frown. “Sorry yes Mrs. Anderson I am okay. No, I have got the boys. I will make sure they get to school on time. You should get to work; you’re going to be late. Their lunches are already packed and made sure the Milo’s lunch did not have anything that had added sugar. We don’t want him bouncing off the walls again.” Mrs. Anderson smiled. “Thank you, Liliana, you are the best nanny we could have asked for and please call me Cecile.”
Lilian smiled and shook her head. “I would love to, but you are my employer and… well you are my employer and as an employee it is a sign of respect. I am going to go finish getting ready have a great day at work Mrs. Anderson.” Cecile sighed and grabbed her keys and purse before leaving their teal green and white two story, four-bedroom Victorian house.
Liliana went to the bathroom next to her room on the first floor and looked in the mirror. Looking back was a five-foot four inch twenty-five-year-old woman with olive eyes pale skin and long blond hair that was in a messy bun. She had gone to college but had to drop out early when her mother became sick. She always had a smile on her face though because no matter what life threw at her she knew that someone else had it worse than her, that is why she made it her mission to help those people and creatures.
Liliana had just finished brushing her teeth and was taking her hair down when she heard shouts coming from upstairs. She quickly runs out of the bathroom and up the stairs in the hallway. There were three rooms upstairs, two on the left and two on the right. The noise was coming from the first door on the right. She opens only to see the twins Milo and Henry, age five, wrestling on the ground and Milo about to sink his teeth into his brother, Henry holding a Milo’s favorite action figure in his hand. Their older brother Charles, ten years old, was watching from the upper bunk bed. Liliana rushes over and tries to gently break the two younger boys up. “Milo hey buddy let go of your brother’s arm, it’s okay let’s talk this out. Henry let go of Milo’s action figure.” Henry gripped it tighter. “No why does Milo take this everywhere and he is the only one in school who can bring it.” Liliana sighs. “Henry buddy you know how your brother does not talk much and you think he does strange things with his toys like lines them up and he does not like change especially when we forget to bring things. Well, your brother’s brain is a little different than yours or Charles’ and he needs a little bit of extra help coping and that action figure helps him.”
Henry’s grip lessens on the action figure and Liliana gently takes it away. Milo lets go of his brother’s arm and looks like he is about to cry. Liliana gently brings him into her lap and moves the Batman figure around and begins to speak in a deep voice. “That was not nice of Henry, was it?” Milo shakes his head. “I know it’s hard but if you ever feel upset you have your music corner or hug one of your stuffed animals and….” Lilian goes back to her normal voice as she looks up at Charles. “Charles, I want you to come and get me if this happens again.” Charles just looks at Milo and Liliana and final nods. Liliana gave Milo a big hug and smiled. “Finish getting ready for school boys we will be leaving soon.”
Liliana stood up and turned around and saw Mr. Anderson standing in the doorway watching her. “Mr. Anderson, I thought you had left for work already. I am just getting the boys ready for school.” Liliana tried to leave but Mr. Anderson blocked her path. “I left something in my room. You know something Lily may I call you Lily?” He begins to trail his hand up and down her arm gently. “You have such a way with the boys maybe we can take this….” Lilian pulls away. “Mr. Anderson it is Liliana, and I don’t know what you are playing at, but I have to get the boys to school and what about your wife?” Mr. Anderson grabbed Liliana by the wrist tightly. “Please call me Mathew. The boys can catch the school bus to school and what my wife doesn’t know won’t hurt her.” Liliana tries to pull away, but the man’s hand gets tighter around her wrist, and it begins to hurt.
The boys watch on as this is happening. Milo begins to cry and charges at his father and starts to hit and kick him. Mathew just pushes him to the ground. Liliana fights harder and manages to smack Mr. Anderson on the cheek and when he finally let go of her, she kneels on the ground to check on Milo and gives him a hug. “Why are you cuddling him he attacked me. We should have given him up for adoption or put him into the system that way we would not have to deal with him.” Mathew’s face was turning red. “He did nothing wrong you upset him by hurting me and he is just a child who has Autism.” Mathew rubbed his cheek. He was so mad that he glared at her. “You are going to regret this.” He pulls out his phone and dials a number as he storms off.
Charles and Henry come over worried “Everything is going to be okay let’s get you ready for school.” Liliana gives Milo one more big hug and then hugs the other boys. She gets up and helps the boys get ready for school. They exit the house after getting everything they needed from Charles backpack to the boy’s lunches. They walked out into the warm spring breeze that makes California so nice to live in. They walked four blocks down till they got to Charles school. She gives Charles a big hug and she whispered something into his ear. “I put something extra special in your lunch today I hope you like it.” She waves as she and the twins continue to walk just one more block down to their preschool. She gives them both a hug. “I will see you after school okay. Have a great day.”
Liliana takes a deep breath and smiles. Even though Mr. Anderson probably will ruin her chance to continue working with the boys there was one thing that he could not take away from her and that was her volunteer work she did at three different locations, the warming house for the homeless, the animal shelter, and at the library reading stories to the children. She sighed as she made her way to the library, she spent an hour a day there and she loved it and the kids there loved.
The library was only two blocks away from the twins school which made it easy for her to get there and she was always early so she had time to relax in the little cafe in the back and talk to some of the employees there. The building was old but newly renovated with white stucco walls and glass front doors. Liliana smiled as she walked through the front doors. She greeted the librarian at the front desk before walking over to one of the computers. She pulled up the report on suspected child abuse form before she finally made a call. She finally got of the phone and smiled what ever happens now at least the boys would be safe she would fill out the form later. Half an hour later it was time for her to read to the children.
“And then the girl picked up the amulet and held it above her head.” Gasps came from the children. “Light began to fill the room and as soon as it appeared the light vanished. The witch was gone. The prince ran over to the girl and smiled at her taking her hand. ‘Please stay with me.’ The girl looked sad. ‘I want to, but I am not of this world and must return to my own. I will always love you.’ The girl smiled as she began to flicker and fade.” Liliana moved a felt piece of the board before saying. “That is the end of this chapter. We continue with the story next week.” There were a few grumbles from the children as they got up and left with their care takers. She smiled as she put away the books and the felt pieces she used to tell the story, of a girl who traveled to a different world to help save a kingdom. She looked at the prince and smiled. “Now if only you were not a fairy tale.” She smiled and put the felt prince away.
As Liliana left, she said her goodbyes she then headed out the door. Her phone rang and she answered it. “Lilianaaaaaaa….” She just smiled. “Hi Serena, what’s up?” There was a pause on the other end of the line. “I am at the park can you come and meet me there I want to hang and talk.” There was a small pause and the sound of a hand being put over the receiver followed by muffled talking. “Madison don’t put that in your mouth….” Liliana just smiled and shook her head. She waited for Serena to come back on the line. “I am on my way I have several hours before I have to pick up the boys. See you in a few minutes maybe we can get lunch as well.” Serena agreed and they hung up the phone.
The park was a bit further from the library, so Liliana walked to the bus stop. Only having to wait a little less than five minutes for the bus to come she quickly paid the bus fee and went and sat down towards the back of the bus. She closed her eyes. ~Liliana…. Liliana……Liliana…~
Liliana quickly opened her eyes and looked around before realizing that her stop was next. She pulled the string to signal that she wanted to get off and stood up. The bus jerked a little bit and she almost fell into another passenger’s lap. “I am so sorry.” The person behind her just smiled and in a soothing deep voice said. “Think nothing of it.” Liliana wanted to look back to see who the voice belonged to, but the bus stopped, and she had to get off.
Getting off the bus she walks to the corner and turns right and walks up two more blocks before coming to a big clearing with a play structure and a baseball field, basketball courts and a shaded area with trees and picnic tables. As she walked towards the play structure, she heard her name. “Liliana over here.” She sees Serena, holding two kids, one on each hip. The 4-year-old girl had red hair and her face was riddled with freckles. The younger looked like his sister but was only 8 months. “Hi Serena, hi Madi, hi Noah.” Madison grinned and started to squirm so that she could start playing again. “Okay Madison, I will put you down just don’t put anything in your mouth while playing again.”
Serena was a nanny like Liliana, but her’s was a full-time gig because of the 8-month-old. They sat down together on a bench while Serena watched Madison played. Liliana took Noah in her lap and sighed. “Everything okay Liliana?” There was a long pause before Liliana finally opened her mouth to speak. “I reported Mr. Anderson for child abuse today. I had to and after he tried to force me to have you know what with him….” Serena let out a gasp. “He did what…?” Noah grabbed hold of Liliana’s finger. “He pushed Milo down because Milo had tried to hit and bite him when he was hurting my wrist when I told him no, I had to right Noah, I had to report that nasty man.” Liliana said that to Serena but while talking in the baby voice to Noah, who smiled showing off his 6 teeth. “I have been with the boys for a while now and Charles alone won’t go near him the twins only want me or their mom to pick them up from school. I have also just started to see marks on all three of their bottoms, they look like belt marks.
Suddenly Liliana’s phone goes off and she places it to her ear. “Hi is this, Liliana.” Liliana was confused as to who this was. “Hi, I am Ms. Molly from Sunny-side Preschool. There has been an incident with Milo. We tried to reach his mother, but she is not picking up and you were the first name under emergency contacts.” Lillian stood up quickly still holding Noah. “I will be right there.” Liliana ended the call before looking at Serena. “Sorry I have to go there was an incident with Milo and I have to get to his school.” Serena took Noah from Liliana. “I will give you a ride. Let me get Madison.” Serena quickly gets Madison who was playing on the play structure and the four of them make their way to Serena’s car.
After strapping the kids into the car seats, Serena got into the driver seat and Liliana got into the passenger side, and they took off. Ten minutes later they arrive at that school and Liliana gets out of the car.“Thanks Serena, I owe you lunch. Bye Madi, Bye Noah.” She rushed to the entrance of the school where a policeman was standing talking to a young woman who was in her late twenties. “Sorry to interrupt my name is Liliana. I was called because of an incident with Milo the boy I nanny.” The woman sighed a breath of relief. “Hi, I am Ms. Molly. Everything was fine this morning when the twins arrived but as we were getting ready for lunch a man comes in claiming that he is their father and said that Milo had a doctor’s appointment something about him being abused by his nanny and that she had been s******g them with a belt.” Liliana was shocked that Mr. Anderson was trying to put the blame on her. “He took Milo’s arm tight and tried to drag him out of the room. Milo started to cry and scream and pull away. The man yanked him, and I thought I heard a pop and Milo started to scream louder. The man panicked and let go and then walked out. I had my director call the police and said I should file a report about the child abuse.”
Liliana nodded her head. “I filed one this morning as well. I can’t believe Mr. Anderson would accuse me of abusing the boys. I would never do that.” The teacher nodded her head. “Milo is in the principal’s office he won’t go anywhere unless you are there or his mother.” Liliana thanks Ms. Molly once more and heads inside. She pulls out her phone once more and clicks on Mrs. Anderson’s name and it begins to ring. It rang only once before there is a voice on the other line. “Liliana is everything okay my phone said that the twins school called me.” Liliana took a deep breath before she started to talk. “I am here at the school there was an incident, and you need to get here as soon as you can. Henry is fine but Milo got hurt.” Before Liliana could say anything, Cecile spoke frantically. “I am on my way, and we need to talk.” Liliana sighs, she probably knew what the conversation was about. “Okay I will see you when you get here, we will be the principal’s office.”
Liliana ends the call and walks into the office next to the entrance to the school. She sees the office manager sitting with Milo holding an ice pack on his elbow and tears were trickling down his face. Seeing Liliana, Milo wanted to get up but Liliana shook her head no. She came over to him and sat down next to him. She took the ice pack from the woman and Milo came to sit in her lap. “Milo, can I see your elbow I know it hurts but the ice will help.” Milo whimpers as he lifts his arm. Liliana gingerly touches the bruised and swollen part of his elbow. She was no doctor, but it looked like the boy’s elbow was dislocated. She tries to sooth Milo as she puts the ice back on his elbow. She starts to sing to Milo and gently strokes his head.
Thirty minutes had passed when Mrs. Anderson finally arrived. She rushed into the office and sees Liliana cuddling Milo while holding an ice pack to his elbow. “Liliana, Milo’s teacher told me what happened. I can’t believe my husband would do something like that. He always tells me he loves the boys.” Liliana just nodded as if she understood her employer’s feelings. “Mrs. Anderson Milo needs to see a doctor. I don’t think Henry will want to be left behind so I think you should go get him first.” Cecile nods before making her way to get Henry. A few minutes later she comes back carrying Henry who looked like he was about to cry too.
Liliana picks up Milo. Their mother signs them out and the four of them make their way to the car. They put the twins in the car seats and Mrs. Anderson motions for Liliana to get in. Liliana shook her head no and backs away tears about threatening to spill over. This was the hardest part she ever had to do. She was worried about what Mr. Anderson would do if he found out that she was not fired or quit. “I am sorry Mrs. Anderson but I can’t. Your husband called you this morning didn’t he?” Mrs. Anderson was shocked. She was about to ask the girl how she knew that when Liliana just shook her head again. “I had a feeling he was going to do that. It’s not the first time it’s happened. I guess he told you that I had come on to him and that he saw me push Milo to the ground or a long the lines of that.” Mrs. Anderson just nodded her head. “What do you mean it has happened before.” Liliana looked down. “The family before I came here. The husband hit on me and nearly succeeded in getting me into bed with him though I fought him the whole way. His wife found out and he told her that I was the one that was hitting on him, and though she knew I was not that kind of person she still chose to believe him and fired me.” Liliana still looked down. “I think it’s just better if you fire me. Even if you don’t believe your husband, I am worried about what he might do to you or the boys if you don’t. You are a strong woman and you and the boys will get through this.”
Tears started to well in Mrs. Anderson’s eyes as she nods her head. She hugs Liliana before getting into the car. Liliana wipes her eyes off before looking at the boys. “You boys be good, and I hope to see you around okay I am going to miss you so much.” She turns away from the car as they drive away wiping away the tears that were spilling over. She sighs and walks off.
~Two weeks Later~
It had been two weeks since the incident with her former employer and there had been no word on the whereabouts of Mr. Anderson. Liliana was walking around the warming shelter that she volunteers at every Wednesday and Friday, talking to the guests there making sure everyone was good and that they had everything they needed and listening to some of the stories they told. After her shift was over, she grabbed her belongings and walked out only to have this funny feeling that someone was following her. She looks around and sees a man wearing a hat and dirty clothes walking away from her. She shakes it off thinking that he was a homeless guy just wandering around the street.
Liliana got to the end of the street when she was forcefully turned around and found a gun pointed straight at her. Liliana raised her hands to show that she was unarmed and did not want to fight. “I have nothing to give you.” Some of the bystanders froze as they watched the scene take place, others had pulled out their phones and were calling the police. “Nothing to give me,” the man laughs. “How about the life you stole from me. My wife changed the locks on the door there is a warrant out for my arrest for child abuse which I am guessing is your doing.” Liliana was trying to stay calm as she began to recognize the man that she had thought was a homeless man.
The clean-cut man did not look clean or well-groomed anymore. His skin was dirty and so was his hair. His face also had stubble on it from it not being shaved in a long time. It also looked like he had not slept at all. “Mr. Anderson that was not my doing you did this to yourself. Liliana tries to take a step back only to hear the man c**k the gun and she flinches. Mr. Anderson opens his mouth to say something but the only words that Liliana could hear were coming form somewhere else.
“Speak to me spirits,
Call her name.
One that is pure and true.
Bring her here to save our world,
And bring these two warring kingdoms peace.”
Liliana looked around but saw no one. “Did you say something?” Mr. Anderson's eyes flared as he pointed the gun straight at Liliana’s heart. “Since I lost my life, family, and career, it’s only fitting that you lose yours as well.” Suddenly, light erupted around Liliana, though the people around seemed not to notice it. She took a step back only to hear a bang and then pain in her shoulder and she fell. She kept falling until everything went black.
