CHAPTER 1.
Vianca reigned supreme, a celestial being disguised as a mortal. Her beauty, like a supernova exploding across the night sky, left the boys perpetually swooning and stumbling over their own feet. As she silently sat on her desk, her mere presence evoked a collective sigh, as if the very air itself couldn't help but be enchanted by her ethereal allure. But it wasn't just Vianca's outward charm that bewitched me; it was her extraordinary talent that truly set her apart. With a voice that could make the heavens weep tears of joy, she effortlessly wove a melodic spell, leaving all who had the privilege of hearing her sing utterly spellbound. It was as if the angels themselves paused their celestial duties to listen, their harps momentarily forgotten in the face of such celestial harmony. As I sat there, my eyes involuntarily darted back and forth between Vianca and Gloria, like a spectator at a comedic tennis match. On one side, there was Vianca, a vision of beauty that could make even the most hardened hearts skip a beat. Her confidence oozed from every pore, as if she had a personal fan club of laughter following her every move. Sure, Gloria may not have possessed the same level of physical beauty as Vianca, but her intelligence was a force to be reckoned with. It was as if she had a secret reservoir of knowledge tucked away in her brain, ready to be unleashed at any given moment. While Vianca commanded attention due to her physical beauty, Gloria had a different approach. She was a peaceful and polite lady, always opting to remain silent unless absolutely necessary. It was as if she had mastered the art of selective conversation, only speaking when she had something truly valuable to say. This quiet demeanor was one of the reasons why I found myself placed next to her. The final bell rang, signaling the end of yet another adventurous day at school,I turned to face Gloria, trying my best to hide my amusement at her sudden appearance. "Well, well, well, if it isn't the master of surprise entrances! What brings you to my left side today?" Gloria smirked, twirling a strand of her hair. "Oh, you know, just felt like switching things up a bit. Gotta keep you on your toes, right?" I chuckled, shaking my head. "You certainly have a knack for that, Gloria. So, what's the plan now? Are we forming a human blockade or something?" Gloria playfully nudged me with her elbow. "Oh, come on, don't act like you don't enjoy my spontaneous antics. But seriously, I wanted to talk to you before we part ways. I have something important to say." I raised an eyebrow, feigning surprise. "Oh, do tell, Gloria. Is it a secret mission or a groundbreaking discovery?" Gloria rolled her eyes, pretending to be offended. "No, it's not that dramatic. But I wanted to let you know that you're my only friend here. I don't really click with anyone else. So, promise me you won't leave me hanging!" I couldn't help but smile at her sincerity. "Well, Gloria, I must say I'm honored to be your one and only friend. But what about the other students? Aren't they your pals too?" Gloria shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Oh, they're great , but you're my number one. The others are like side dishes, but you're the main course." As I engaged in the lively conversation with Gloria, my attention was abruptly stolen by a sight that could only be described as a comedic masterpiece in motion. There, walking towards me with an ethereal grace, was none other than Vianca herself. Her beauty seemed to radiate like a spotlight, illuminating the world around her with a captivating aura of humor. The air crackled with an invisible energy, as if even the universe couldn't help but chuckle at the sheer brilliance of Vianca's presence. It was as if she carried a secret stash of laughter, releasing it into the atmosphere with every step she took. "Bytheway, did you manage to summarize the previous topic?" Gloria's voice broke through the captivating allure, instantly pulling me back to reality. With a smile on her face, she was the true embodiment of a loyal friend. In fact, she was my only friend at Rollins College. Despite her quiet nature, I had grown accustomed to Gloria's presence. We had become inseparable, sharing meals, exchanging ideas, walking home together sometimes, and even studying side by side. She was the one person I could always rely on, even if my heart longed for someone else entirely - Vianca. Oh, Vianca, the object of my affection since the very first day I laid my eyes on her. There was an undeniable allure to her beauty that left me mesmerized. I yearned to be by her side, to have her as my one and only. But, alas, love is a tricky thing, and it seemed that fate had other plans for me. "Yes, I did," I said, my voice cracking slightly as I emotionally stared at Vianca. She walked towards me with a grace that could rival a ballerina, leaving a trail of sweet perfume in her wake. Gloria who always seemed to have an eye on me, noticed my infatuation with Vianca, and it clearly annoyed her. I hadn't actually confessed my love for Vianca, but it seemed like Gloria could read my mind. My longing gazes were so obvious, they practically had their own zip code. As Vianca finally approached, she slyly slipped a letter into my left pocket, brushing past my shoulders like a mischievous pixie. It was only then that I realized Gloria was nowhere to be seen – she had already made a swift exit towards the door. I couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and excitement. What did that letter say? Was it a love confession from Vianca? Or perhaps it was a secret mission to save the world? My mind raced with possibilities, and I couldn't wait to uncover the truth. But first, I had to deal with Gloria's obvious annoyance. I approached Gloria, her eyebrows furrowed in irritation. "Seriously? You're practically drooling over Vianca right in front of me. Can't you at least pretend to be subtle?" I flashed her a sheepish grin, trying to diffuse the tension. "Subtlety has never been my strong suit, Gloria. Besides, who wouldn't be mesmerized by Vianca's enchanting aura? It's like being under a love spell!" Gloria rolled her eyes, but I could see a hint of amusement in them. "Well, you better snap out of it soon. We have work to do, and I can't have you daydreaming about Vianca's sweet scent all day,Promise me you won't abandon me. I don't have any other friends, you know. It's just you and me against the world!" I couldn't help but chuckle at her over-the-top declaration. "Oh, Gloria, you're really milking this 'no friends' thing, huh? Are you auditioning for a one-woman show?" Gloria gasped dramatically, placing a hand on her chest. "How did you know? I've always dreamt of becoming a Broadway star! But until then, you'll have to be my co-star, my sidekick, my partner in crime." I raised an eyebrow, pretending to be deep in thought. "Hmm, let's see. Should I leave you all alone and break your heart, or should I stay and become your personal stand-up comedian? Tough choice." Gloria playfully nudged me, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes. "Oh, come on! You know you can't resist my sparkling personality and witty banter. Plus, who else will laugh at your lame jokes?" I gasped dramatically, clutching my heart in mock distress. "Are you saying my jokes are lame? I thought they were comedy gold! I demand a recount!" Gloria burst into laughter, unable to contain herself. "Okay, okay, maybe your jokes are slightly above average. But seriously, don't leave me hanging. Be my partner in crime, my confidant, and my forever friend." I pretended to ponder the situation, stroking an imaginary beard. "Well, Gloria, you're putting me in quite the pickle. It's like choosing between Netflix and sleep – both are essential, but can I have both at the same time?" Gloria gave me a playful glare, crossing her arms. "Are you comparing me to Netflix or sleep? I'm not sure if I should be flattered or offended!" I burst into laughter, unable to contain myself. "Oh, Gloria, you're a gem! How can I resist your charm and comedic timing? I'll be your forever friend, but just know that my jokes will always be funnier." Later that evening as I lay on my bed, the weight of the letter from Vianca burning a hole in my pocket, my mind swirled with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. With trembling hands, I carefully extracted the crumpled paper,as I unfolded the letter, my heart skipped a beat. Could it be possible that she had finally realized my feelings for her? Was this the confession of love I had secretly yearned for all these years? But then, a pang of guilt washed over me as I remembered Gloria, my best friend. Her warning echoed in my mind, reminding me not to choose Vianca over her. The weight of her friendship weighed heavily on my conscience, threatening to drown out the voice of my own desires. Confusion clouded my thoughts, and I found myself at a crossroads, torn between the longing for Vianca's love and the fear of losing Gloria's friendship. It was a battle between my heart and my loyalty, a decision that could shape the course of my relationships forever. To my surprise, the letter held a different message than what I had anticipated. It was not a confession of love from Vianca, but rather a heartfelt plea for help in her studies. Confusion washed over me, as I had expected words of romance and longing, not a request for academic assistance. As I read through the lines that Vianca had penned, a mixture of relief and disappointment coursed through my veins. She explained how her parents had advised her to seek out someone who could genuinely support her academic endeavors, someone who could help her focus on her studies rather than getting caught up in fleeting romances. In the letter, Vianca poured her heart out, expressing her struggles and her desire for a true friend who could guide her towards success. She acknowledged my intelligence, kindness, and dedication, and humbly asked if I would be willing to lend a helping hand in her educational journey. An extract from Vianca's letter read: "Dear Linz, I hope this letter finds you well. I want to start by expressing my deepest gratitude for your friendship throughout the years. Unlike the other boys who saw me as a love tool, you have always been there for me, offering support and kindness when I needed it most. Recently, my parents had a serious talk with me about my academic future. They urged me to find someone who could help me focus on my studies, to surround myself with individuals who genuinely care about my success. And in that moment, my thoughts turned to you. Linz, you possess a brilliance and dedication that I have always admired. You have a way of understanding complex concepts effortlessly, and your passion for learning is infectious. I can't help but wonder if you would be willing to guide me, to help me navigate the challenges of my educational journey. Please take your time to consider my request, I'm looking forward for your reply."
