CHAPTER 2 The Wedding

“No! No! Stay away from me! Don't come near!” she shouted repeatedly. She still did not remove her both hands that covered her face. She was afraid to see the man approaching. “Yani! Yani! Wake up! Wake up.” Her mother called while shaking her body. She was stunned when she woke up to feel her mother's fist shaking. She grabbed her chest and gasped for breath. Her mother hurried to the kitchen to get some drinking water. “I'm having nightmares again. She whispered and tried to calm herself. She repeatedly dreamed like this since then. Something she did not understand. Why does she often dream of a man holding a chain and an old lock?” Her Mother returned with a glass of water. This scene is normal to her Mother when she hears her daughter screaming. “Did you dream again?" her mother asked. She immediately handed to her the glass of water. Yani's hand was still shaking when she reached for the glass. Only she could speak when she ran out a glass of water. ***** “Why do I often dream like this? What does my dream mean?” I asked clueless. Every time I ask my Mother about my dream she had only one answer. She told me it was just a nightmare. That I shouldn’t worry about it. I handed the empty glass to my Mother and threw my tired body on the bed. I glanced at the clock on the wall and it was six o'clock in the morning. “Oh! if you want to sleep again I will leave you,” my Mother said. She immediately turned around and left my room. I wanted to go back to sleep but I was afraid to close my eyes again. As I hugged the pillow, I couldn’t help but think of the recurring dream. It seems real. It seems like it will happen in my life. As I pondered I heard the sound of a car in front of our house. Aside from the chickens crowing every morning I knew if I could hear a strange noise outside. I immediately got up and peeked out the window. My eyes widened when I saw Alejandro's car parked in front of our house. “Why did he come so early? What does he need?” I saw my mother meet him and help carry the thing he brought. I lay down to my bed again. From outside I could smell what my mother was cooking. I think Alejandro will be having breakfast with us, so he came early. I got up and adjusted myself before facing Alejandro. While I'm fixing myself. I heard a soft knock on my door. I hurried to open it swiftly. My Mother frowned when she saw that I was ready. “Oh! I thought you were still asleep?" she asked with a smile. She looked at me from head to toe. She touched my face and then squeezed my soft cheek. My mother is always like that. She used to do it every morning when I woke up. I am old enough but she still treats and cares for me like a baby. “Alright Mom that's enough.” I giggle to stop her from tickling me. “Oh Dear! Why does the time go fast? You are not a baby anymore,” she said while holding my hands and I saw sadness in her eyes. Even before we started crying I immediately changed our conversation. “Wait! What did you cook and I smelled good food earlier?” I asked staring straight into her eyes. I smiled at her and I was trying to be calm so that she would not notice me. She was surprised as if she had forgotten to say something. “Oh my God! I forgot to tell you something,” she said in shock. She looked around as if someone was watching us. I pretended that I already knew Alejandro was here. “What is that?” I asked while wrapping my arms around her waist. That's how I caressed my Mother. I don't know how I would be without her? All my life I have relied on her. “Oh! Dear Alejandro is here to join us for breakfast and he has something to say,” she said. Then we slowly walked towards the kitchen. I stopped when I heard from her. And I thought again what he needed this early morning?” “Huh? What else?” I asked and I don't think his request will end. I heard my Mother sighed. I bowed because I accidentally raised the tone of my voice. As I bent down I heard her deep sighed again. She held my face and lifted it up. She stared into my eyes, reading my reaction and she wanted me to understand everything. “You know we want nothing but to give you what is right for you. And it's time for you to find yourself. Just let us do the things we want for you,” my mother said sadly. I bit my lower lip. I felt guilty about what she said. I know all these years they have no other desire for me. All about for my bright future. “I'm sorry! I whispered and hugged her tightly. I heard her soft laugh. I know she understands my feelings. After the emotional scene. They immediately went to the kitchen. They could hear the loud conversation between Alejandro and her Father. When the two noticed that Yani and her Mother were approaching, Alejandro immediately stood up smiling to greet her. But she did not expect that Alejandro would kiss her on the cheek. To her shock she stiffened in her stance. She could barely blink her eyes. It was the first time she had ever been kissed by a man on the cheek. Alejandro stared and grinned at her reaction. He knows that Yani did not used to be socialist with others which is normal for Alejandro. She snapped back to reality when her Father spoke to her. “Why your eye bags turning black? Didn't you sleep well?” my Father asked. He was staring straight into my eyes. Then my Mother and Alejandro looked at me when they heard what my Father said. I bit my lower lip because I was not used to noticing if there was something strange happening to me. “Yeah! I had a bad dream and I couldn't sleep back after,” I replied with a crooked smile. I was about to take a step to pull the chair but Alejandro preceded me. He held out his hand to let me sit. I glanced at him and gave him a quick smile. I was shy to eat in front of him. He served me like a princess. I couldn't help myself. I was feeling uncomfortable getting along with other people. I can see how my Father was happy talking to Alejandro. I glance at Alejandro from time to time. I can feel the kindness of his heart. When they finished eating breakfast, her parents left them in the living room. Yani did not restrain herself and immediately asked what they were going to talk about. Alejandro swallowed first before speaking. “Sweetie, I am here to ask you to arrange our wedding as soon as possible. If it were possible today. I wouldn't want to surprise you but I need to take you with me when I get home to the mansion,” he said scratching his head. “W-what? What did you say? I was shocked to hear that I was deaf of what he said. Anyone would be surprised in this situation. But how could I refuse after I agreed to his request. It was heavy inside me but I had to explore the mysterious agreements. This is also probably the opportunity to answer all the questions in my mind. He moved closer to my seat and held my two hands. He stared straight into my eyes. I also couldn’t help but look at him. Even if we get married, you are free and I promise that no one will intervene between the two of us,” he said and still looking at me. I breathed deeply by what he said because I could read in his reaction and the sincerity of what he said and I slowly nodded at him as if I was hypnotized. Alejandro immediately went to the municipality in the town of Quezon to arrange their wedding. They just want a simple wedding. In Yani's room she was staring at the white elegant wedding dress given by Alejandro. The clothes she will wear for their wedding. She, herself could not believe that she would marry to someone out of the plan. She was startled to hear a knock on her door. When she opened the door two of her friends came inside to visit her. Her friends wonder why she is sad. The two were also surprised to see the white dress on the bed. Her two friends were about to speak but she preceded it. She took a deep breath before she explained about the Agreement and her wedding to Alejandro. “What? Are you getting married now as in today? Rhea asked in shock. She nodded slowly to her friend and she continued to explain her agreement with Alejandro so that they could understand. “Why don't you refuse the agreement if it is against your will? Mandy asked as she approached her. Mandy put her arm around her shoulder to lighten her mood. “It's okay! I accept this as a challenge in my life as a lawyer.” I groaned after I replied to Mandy. “So, now that you are getting married, you should prepare yourself,” Rhea says that she is even more excited about the wedding. Then Mandy placed her hand on Rhea’s shoulder. “You're right,” Mandy added. The two friends helped her fix her make-up, outfit and hair. It was also easy for them to do because all the things they needed which was provided by Alejandro was complete. Two hours later Alejandro returned to pick them up. They immediately went to the municipality in town. Yani's friends join to witness their wedding. When they reached the municipality the ceremony immediately began. A Judge who was a friend of Alejandro handling their wedding. In the middle of the ceremony they were given the papers that needed to be signed. Yani stared at the papers and her mind was full of questions. “Do I have to sign it all? Why are the papers so thick?” she asked Alejandro. She wanted to read the contents of the papers but she did not have time because they were in the middle of the ceremony. Alejandro paused at Yani's question. He faced her and held her by the arm. “Trust me sweetie, you are a lawyer you can change everything at the right time,” he whispered to her. She frowned at what Alejandro had said. And she became even more curious about what he told her. She could do nothing but give in to it. She also does not want to humiliate him in front of the people around them.
