I walk to the kitchen and she smiles at me. “Need a hand?” I ask, and she winks at me. “If it’s from you, always.” She says as she hands me some gloves.
I walk to the sink and start washing my hands when I hear Alpha Tom come in and start barking orders. I freeze and hope to Goddess he doesn’t see me. I move to the counter next to Lana and start busying myself cutting vegetables.
“You,” He says and I know he’s talking to me. I turn around and bow my head, “Alpha.” I whisper.
“Have you finished all your chores, traitor?” He spits at me in disgust.
“Yes, I thought I would…” I feel my head twist to the side. I grab my cheek and I hear Lana gasp.
“You will mind your tongue! I did not ask but a yes or no question,” he spits at me.
I choose not to respond this time and instead just look down. I clench my hands together and wait for whatever is next.
“Alpha, if I may,” I hear Lana step in front of me.
“I asked her for some help as I was running behind. She does best in the kitchen. If anyone is to blame if something did not get done, it is my fault,” She says in a stern, no-bullshit tone.
I wait for another smack from the Alpha, he hates it when anyone defends me.
“Do not let this happen again, Lana,” he says, annoyed.
He turns around and stomps out of the kitchen, slamming the door behind me.
“Oh my. Let’s get you some ice,” She says as he takes me to the freezer. I get sympathetic looks from the kitchen workers.
“Thanks, Lana,” I say as she hands me a frozen bag of peas.
“Taylor, you are not a bad person. You are innocent in this whole situation. I am sorry you are going through this, but if I can help in any way, I will,” She smiles at me. A tear runs down her face as she places the bag on my face.
“Keep it there, it will help with the swelling,” She says as she walks away to finish cutting vegetables up.
A few minutes go by and I stand up and put the bag back in the freezer. “Let me help,” I say and she nods her head. She doesn’t ever talk about the abuse I go through, she works past it, she has taught me never to dwell on things I cannot control, but to move past them and busy myself.
It’s been a lifesaver in this hell hole of a place. “Do not dwell on things you cannot control, work past it and you will once again find your peace.” She would tell me that daily when I was younger. I help her stir fry the veggies and put them in their big pan with shrimp and steak. Alpha David wants fajitas for his dinner, and since it’s his birthday tomorrow we have to oblige. I hope when we are finished I can go back to my room and sleep, my body craves the rest.
The pack is eating outside today, since the dining hall is covered in decorations for the party. Guests have already started to arrive. Packs from all over have come to celebrate, some Alpha’s bringing their daughters in hopes that David is their mate. It would bring their packs closer and everyone wants to be closer to this pack. We hold one of the biggest packs to date.
We bring out the last tray of food and I tell Lana I will be in the kitchen finishing up dishes with the other Omegas. She nods and I walk quickly and quietly back inside.
When I enter I notice they aren’t back from dinner yet. I sigh and busy myself washing dishes. I am focused on doing what is in front of me, so I did not hear the door open to the kitchen.
“Uhm..” David says and I jump.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” He says and I am taken back by his sudden act of kindness.
I do not say anything, I just turn back and start washing the dishes again, fully aware I am being stared at. My heart thuds in my chest, I feel my forehead start to bead with sweat.
“C..Can I get you something?” I ask in a whisper.
“Uh, no. Actually, yes. Could I get a glass of water.” I put down my dish, noting this is very odd. Then fear takes hold of me, what if this is a trap? He is only being nice to me because he wants to punish me for something. Either way I have to get him the water. I step off the stool and I go to the freezer to get the ice, I feel him step up beside me. I close the freezer and jump because of how close he is standing next to me. The cup slips from my grip and flies into the air, he catches it right before it hits the ground.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry,” I rush out picking up the ice cubes. He bends down and helps me gather them. They never help me. What is up with him?
“It’s ok, I shouldn’t have been standing so close. What happened to your cheek?” he points out and I drop my gaze, I toss the ice in the sink and go and grab more.
“I should not have talked back,” I whispered as I filled his glass with water. I heard the freezer open and I turned around to hand him his glass. He is putting ice into a rag.
He takes the cup and walks to me. I back up, afraid of being hit again.
“I won't hurt you, please don’t move away from me,” He says so sincerely. This is all so weird to me, but I stand still not wanting to anger him. He places the rag on my cheek and I reach up to take it from him.
“Thanks,” I say looking at the floor.
“Uh, yeah. No problem,” He says as he backs away.
“David? What are you doing?” Ellie’s pissed-off voice comes from the other side of the room. I look at her and she is furious.
“Ellie, go wait outside,” He says in a tone that matches her fury.
“No! Why are you here helping the traitor?” he stands up, walks to her and grips her arm.
“I said out now!” he throws her out and looks back at me. I feel his intense gaze as I look at the floor, suddenly finding it very interesting. He stands there for what feels like forever until I hear the door open and close and I feel I am alone again. That’s when I let out a breath I did not realize I was holding. What was that?
