First Time on TV
Derek's POV
December 2022 Heading-To Napa Valley
The highway stretched out endlessly before me, the passing scenery outside the car window slowly fading into the distance. The cool air from the air conditioning kissed my skin, while the soft strains of country music filled the interior of the car. A large bottle of Red Bull sat next to me as I made my way towards the final destination of Napa Valley in California, the renowned wine region. My heart was set on meeting the woman who held my admiration and love more than anyone else - Jessica Pegula.
Jessica Pegula, the talented American professional tennis player, ranked third in the world and number one in domestic tennis in the United States. Her journey was nothing short of inspiring, beginning her tennis career at a young age and persevering through the challenges of the ITF Challenger Circuit. With relentless dedication and numerous victories, she slowly climbed the ranks to break into the top 100 in the world. Despite hailing from a wealthy family that owned the Pegula Sports and Entertainment company, which boasted the NFL Buffalo Bills football team and NHL team Sabres, Jessica seldom mentioned her background. Her focus remained steadfast on honing her tennis skills, overcoming early injuries, and achieving the remarkable position she held today.
August 2022, US Open Flushing Meadows NY
Recollection
As the summer of 2022 drew to a close in August, the thrilling US Tennis Open took place in Flushing Meadows, New York, spanning two eventful weeks.
The competition was fierce, yet as I watched match after match according to the schedule, it all seemed routine, almost mechanical.
Perhaps it was due to my absence from the country for the past two and a half years, leading to a waning interest in tennis. Or perhaps it was the absence of someone like Maria Sharapova, who once captured my heart.
One sunny morning remains vivid in my memory. The matches had not yet commenced, and the TV broadcast showcased pre-match news and behind-the-scenes clips.
A scene unfolded of a man and woman walking into a cozy breakfast shop together, sharing smiles, coffee, and donuts as they engaged in lively conversation. The woman, holding a cup of coffee and a donut, narrated how she balanced her morning meal to ensure optimal nutrition without excess calories, speaking in a captivating contralto voice with a touch of icy elegance.
In that moment, I was captivated by her presence.
The screen identified her as American tennis player - Jessica Pegula.
Though it was my first time hearing her name, she left an indelible impression on me.
During that US Open, she advanced to the quarterfinals, a feat she repeated in all four major tournaments that year, achieving a historic world ranking of third and earning the title of Top Ranked American.
What struck me deeply was her post-match interview following her loss to Iga in the US Open quarterfinals. Gracefully sitting at the press conference with a Heineken bottle in hand, she sipped casually while answering reporters' inquiries with a smile. She quipped, "Well, I have a drug test later, might as well have a drink now," as the classic geometric ring on her finger caught my eye, reminiscent of elegant designs akin to Buccellati. Despite expressing some regrets, she emphasized giving her all in the match. Tennis, a sport of victories and defeats, demanded perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges.
December 2022 Arriving at Napa Valley
As Jamie Miller's haunting melody "Maybe Next Time" filled my car, its poignant lyrics and the soulful resonance of Jamie's voice resonated deeply within me.
Perhaps next time...
The scenic highway boasted a breathtaking view, a harmonious blend of mountains and coastline. Its beauty rivaled the solitude of Route 66.
The fact that Jess had agreed to meet me, confirmed through our exchange on Messenger the previous night, filled me with a mix of excitement and nervousness. It would be our first meeting. That evening, I sat on my apartment couch, engrossed in a Messenger conversation with Jess, our dialogues flowing back and forth. She mentioned attending to some business emails and apologized for the delayed responses, to which I assured her it was not an issue.
I inquired about her plans to spend the entire month in Napa Valley during her well-deserved break with her husband. Jess confirmed their reservation at a hotel for the month. "Sounds wonderful," I replied. She shared her excitement about the upcoming month of relaxation after a rigorous eleven months of tennis tournaments. "Yes," I concurred.
After a brief pause, I mustered the courage to type on the screen, "While you're in Napa Valley, could we meet up?" The message was sent, indicating that Jess had read it, yet there was a prolonged moment of silence before her response appeared. I waited with bated breath, fearing rejection. Her message finally arrived, stating, "Alright, I'll be arriving in two days, and I'll have some free time in the afternoon on the first day as my husband, Taylor, has other engagements. Can we make that work?" Without a moment's hesitation, I enthusiastically confirmed my availability.
With our meeting scheduled, I began preparing for the journey ahead. Opting to drive from Las Vegas to Napa, I aimed to make the most of the scenic route and cherish the moments of solitude while avoiding any complications that flying might entail, particularly given Jess's prominent status. Driving there would not only resolve logistical concerns but also afford us the opportunity to bond during the journey. And I found solace in the anticipation of enjoying the picturesque drive and the treasured moments awaiting me.
I set out at 8 in the morning, stopping here and there along the way. After a total of 9 hours on the road, the sky had darkened by the time I reached Napa.
Arriving at the pre-booked hotel, I checked in and immediately messaged Jess on Messenger to let her know of my arrival.
Her response came swiftly: "Great, let's meet at the entrance of XX Winery tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, okay?"
I replied promptly: "No problem, see you tomorrow."
"Goodnight," Jess bid.
"Goodnight."
