Chapter 1: The day it all began
The car pulled up outside my house just as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold and pink. I stood at the gate, my small bag slung over my shoulder, watching as Aaron stepped out of the passenger seat. “Ready?” he asked, flashing me that familiar smile that never failed to make my heart flutter. I nodded, trying to keep my emotions in check. Aaron had always had that effect on me. He was more than just my boyfriend of two years—he was my best friend, my safe space. “Let’s go,” I said softly. Aaron’s dad greeted me warmly as I climbed into the back seat. My mom was already in the front, chatting with him about the drive to Carmenaita, Delfin Albano. The energy in the car was light, almost cheerful, but something about Mom’s demeanor felt…off. She was trying too hard to be casual, her laughter a little forced. I brushed it off. After all, this was supposed to be a fun trip—a chance to spend time with Aaron’s family and explore their so-called “family house.” The drive was long, but Aaron kept me entertained with his usual charm, pointing out random landmarks and making me laugh with silly jokes. I leaned against his shoulder as the car wound through narrow roads and quiet villages. When we finally arrived, the house took my breath away. It stood like a relic of the past, its wooden walls and high ceilings steeped in history. The sprawling garden surrounding it was lush and vibrant, and the air was filled with the scent of flowers. “This is it,” Aaron said, his voice filled with pride. We stepped inside, where I was introduced to the rest of the family. Four brothers and one sister—all of them friendly and welcoming, quick to make me feel at home. “It’s like you’re already part of the family,” Aaron teased, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. I laughed, but his words sent a strange pang through me. The first few days at the family house were a blur of laughter, meals shared around the long dining table, and late-night conversations. Aaron and I stole moments alone, exploring the garden and whispering about the future. Everything felt perfect—almost too perfect. But then, on the fourth day, Aaron and his dad went out for errands, leaving me alone with Mom. That’s when everything changed. As soon as Aaron and his dad left, the air in the house shifted. Mom’s cheery demeanor faded, replaced by an anxious tension I couldn’t ignore. She paced the kitchen, her hands wringing together as though trying to summon the courage to say something. “Mom?” I called, leaning against the doorframe. “Is everything okay?” She stopped, her back to me, and let out a shaky breath. “We need to talk,” she said, her voice trembling. I frowned. “What’s wrong?” She turned to face me, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. “I’ve been meaning to tell you something for a while now, but…I didn’t know how.” A knot formed in my stomach. “You’re scaring me. What is it?” Mom motioned for me to sit at the kitchen table. I followed, my heart pounding as she took the chair across from me. “It’s about Aaron’s dad,” she began hesitantly. “And me.” I froze. Something about the way she said it made my chest tighten. “What about you and Aaron’s dad?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Her hands trembled as she clasped them together. “We’ve been in a relationship for over three years now.” The words hung in the air like a thunderclap. I stared at her, trying to process what she’d just said. “No,” I said, shaking my head. “That doesn’t make sense. You’re saying…you’ve been with him? Aaron’s dad?” She nodded, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I didn’t know how to tell you. I didn’t think it would matter, but…” Her voice cracked. “But now I realize I should have told you sooner.” My world tilted. Aaron’s dad—her boyfriend? My boyfriend’s father? It was too much to take in. “You knew,” I said, my voice breaking. “You knew Aaron and I were together, and you didn’t say anything?” “I thought it was just a phase,” she said desperately. “I didn’t think it would get serious.” “It’s been two years!” I yelled, my emotions spiraling out of control. “How could you keep something like this from me?” Before she could respond, Aaron’s dad walked in, his face pale. He must have overheard. He approached cautiously, his hands raised as if to calm me down. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I should have told you. This is my fault.” I glared at him, my chest heaving with anger. “You think?” “Please,” he said, his voice steady but pleading. “Don’t tell Aaron. Don’t tell the others. Let me handle this. I’ll tell them myself when the time is right.” “When?” I demanded. “You’ve already had three years!” He looked away, guilt written all over his face. “I need more time.” I wanted to scream. To cry. To do anything to release the storm of emotions inside me. But instead, I stood up, my legs shaking beneath me. “You have three months,” I said coldly. “And if you don’t tell them by then, I will.” I stormed out of the kitchen and locked myself in the guest room, tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t face Aaron—not yet. Not after what I’d just learned. The following days were a blur. I avoided Aaron as much as I could, giving vague excuses for my distance. He noticed, of course, and kept asking what was wrong, but I couldn’t tell him. Three months passed in agony, and still, his father said nothing. I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to end things with Aaron, but I didn’t want to tell him the truth. His father begged me not to, and as much as I hated him for putting me in this position, I agreed. Aaron didn’t deserve this. That’s when the plan came to me. If I pretended to cheat, Aaron would have a reason to leave me—one that didn’t involve the truth. He’d hate me, but at least he wouldn’t have to deal with the mess his father had created. I reached out to Chris, the school’s rank one, who I’d admired from afar years ago. I thought he’d understand if I explained the situation, but I didn’t explain. I told him I liked him, and that was it. Aaron found out almost immediately, thanks to his access to my account. The fallout was worse than I’d imagined. He was heartbroken, confused, and angry. He begged me for answers, but I stuck to my lie, even though it tore me apart. Chris, on the other hand, believed me completely. When I saw him at school a week later, he pulled me aside, his expression serious. “I need to tell you something,” he said. I frowned. “What is it?” “I wasn’t joking when I said I liked you,” he admitted, his voice trembling. “I’ve liked you for a long time.” I stared at him, my heart sinking. He didn’t know it was all fake. “You…you’re serious?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He nodded, his eyes earnest. “I thought this was finally my chance to be with you.” I didn’t know what to say. I’d chosen Chris because I thought it was safe, but now I realized how much I’d hurt him. As the days passed, I couldn’t stop thinking about Chris. His sincerity, his quiet strength, and the way he looked at me brought back old feelings I thought I’d buried. One evening, as I scrolled through our old conversations, it hit me. He hadn’t been pretending. He had been real with me from the start. And maybe, just maybe, it was time for me to be real with him too.
