8 Hayley I stared at my mother, at how she kneeled on the floor just a foot from me, at how the weapon stuck from her chest, at how blood seeped from the wound, soaking her pajamas and creating a pool around her. “No, no, no,” I whispered, kneeling beside her. I held on to her shoulders, trying to touch her, to hold her, but not mess with that freaking spear in her chest. Her body convulsed, and I helped her lie down on the floor. “Mom, please, hang on.” I brushed her hair from her face as tears brimmed in my eyes.
