Chapter One
Losing Everything Lora's POV. “What’s this?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. I guess Jackson was also in a bad mood. He has never shown this attitude before, and he always greets me with open arms. But now, his face was cold and distant. Looking back at the brown file, a thought struck me, and I couldn't help but scream. "Don't tell me about the business crash? Did they reject your proposal? What exactly happened? Why is your face like this?" I bombarded him with questions, trying to avoid the fear of losing the most precious thing to me. I have sacrificed a lot for his business, including my mother's medical bill, which seems to add to her worsening sickness. Right now, I can't afford to lose the business, either. "Look at how shameless you are! So you have been expecting my business to crash, huh? Isn't it?" Jack slams his fist on the table and shoots me a glare. "I'm divorcing you! You're a low-life thing!" I was stunned, rooted to the spot, trying to gather things together. At that moment, I couldn't figure out what he meant, but his expression said a lot. I opened the file, and it was written in bold font: "Divorce Agreement." "Wait, Jackie, is this a joke or what?" I asked, but his next reaction crushed all my hopes now. He throws his ring at me. I felt my world tilt on its axis. “Jack, please… I..” I reached out to him, hoping to clear the misunderstanding between us. I wanted to tell him that I'm sorry, even if I'm not aware of what I did wrong. However, he slapped me across my cheeks the moment my hand touched him and pushed me away. “Argh!” Tears rolled down my face, feeling so pained and guilty of the situation. “Get out of my life,” he spat. "Jack! Please wait!" I cried out. In this world, Jackson was the last person I expected to leave me. Someone that I've loved for years, I invested my time, efforts, money, and I even made a lot of sacrifices to make sure he becomes a better person. Just then, a lady comes in, looking elegant from head to toe. She appeared high and respected; it's obvious she is from a rich family. No one has ever come into the house before; she must be here for a reason. “Baby, what are you still doing here? Have you forgotten our date?” The lady speaks gently, shooting daggers my way. She looked at me with so much disgust, she covered her mouth to hold in the nausea she felt at the moment. Obviously, she hates me. However, the closeness between her and Jackson got me worried. “It's nothing, love, she is just a nuisance,” Jack replied. Those words almost set my body and soul apart. “Me? A nuisance?” I muttered, trying to fathom what I was hearing. “What exactly is going on?” The two exchanged kisses right in front of me and left without caring. I guess Jack brought the lady to show me the bridge that has been built between us. Is this going to be the end? Am I going to lose this marriage after everything I've done? “If you plan to leave me now, how do you want me to survive? After everything I've done for you? Remember those sacrifices!” My words got to him, he stopped for a moment, he looked at me and took a step closer. The feeling quickly grew within me, a feeling of hope, joy that he is coming back to realisation. Just then, he grabbed my chin and squeezed it hard. “What have you done that no one has ever done before? Huh? Did you buy me a lifetime?” He released my chin angrily, and I fell flat on my butt. “Don't you ever in your life use some sort of stupid reason to stop me anymore!” he spat. Then he grabbed the lady's hand and left without looking back at me I have nothing left to do in his house; he wants me out of his life, and I must leave immediately. Everything that happened proves his determination to be true. I'm just useless after all. I held the divorce papers tightly, as if my life depends on it. With tears and pains in my health, I walk out of the house and drag myself on the lonely road with my mind long gone. A sound stopped me abruptly for a few seconds before I continued walking. The sound came again and again, I screamed out of frustration, looking for the source of the sound only for me to realise that it's my phone ringing all through. Checking the caller's ID, it's from the hospital. Probably Mom's health is acting up again. “Hello Lora, sorry for reaching out late. Your mom's health act up again today and it was worse than before but we tried our best to save her” I interrupt the nurse out of curiosity , knowing they will end up asking for her bills. “So how is she feeling now? I will make I pay you this week” “You need to stop making excuse and save your mother” I couldn't respond as the right word refused to come out of my mouth. I had never known my father; my mother was my everything. Now, I'm meant to save her life but I can't show my face. I have no money, no connection but I served Jack with all my energy only to get served with a divorce papers. With my current situation, I can't show up in the hospital. Is it something bad if my mother could die? I'm a bad daughter for having such a wish but there is nothing left to offer. “I'm sorry, mom,” I muttered as I entered the bar. I can't receive news of her death in a normal state, I need to do something abnormal.
