Chapter eight
Return to reality
David and Olivia had just returned to Willow Creek from their one-week vacation in Paris. The trip had been everything they had hoped for.The sights they saw at Eiffel tower, night cruise at the Seine, dinners in expensive bistros were memories that will linger on in their mind. It was a refreshing break from their busy lives back home.
David had found it particularly hard to switch off from work. His phone buzzed with constant updates and emails, even in Paris. But he did anyways so they could enjoy themselves without distractions.
For Olivia, the trip had been a welcome escape from her studio and pleasure of luxury she rarely gets to enjoy..
Their return to Willow Creek marked a stark contrast to the dreamy streets of Paris. David was immediately thrust back into the demands of his company. There were meetings to attend, strategies to plan, and a mountain of emails that needed his attention. Olivia, too, found herself overwhelmed with her own commitments. She had several commissions waiting.
Adding to their stress was David's mother, Barbara. Barbara had never been fond of Olivia. She believed that Olivia, with her social class and uncertain income, was not a suitable match for her son. Barbara had made it clear that she disapproved of David taking Olivia to Paris. She thought it was a frivolous trip that only distracted David from his responsibilities.
Despite this , David and Olivia's love for each other remained strong. They were not able to see each other that week, but they made it a point to connect every day. David made sure he called Olivia every night They would whisper sweet words to each other, recounting memories from their trip and sharing the little details of their day.
Their calls were filled with laughter and comfort, even if they couldn't meet because of the work they had to catch up with. David found solace in Olivia's voice, a reminder of the peace they had shared in Paris. Olivia, too, felt reassured by David's steady presence, even if it was just over the phone.
The second week after their return, Barbara dropped by David's office.Without waiting for the secretary to announce her,she burst into her son's office. "David, you need to focus on the family business," she said, her tone stern."This relationship with Olivia is a distraction."
David loved his mother and respected her opinions, but he also knew his heart. Olivia was not a distraction; she was his inspiration. He has tried explaining this to Barbara, but she wouldn't listen .
This particularly day however, David decided to confront the issue head on.,He took a deep breath and began."Mom, I know you don't approve of Olivia, but I need you to understand how important she is to me," David said, trying to keep his voice steady."She is the woman I love and will ever love"
Barbara sighed, "David, it's not that I don't like Olivia. I'm not sure she's the right person to support you though. You need someone from our social class to help you build your business and not a painter.
"She is the right person, Mom," David insisted. "She's my partner in every sense. She understands me, she supports me, and she makes me happy. Isn't that what matters?"
Barbara looked at her son, seeing the determination in his eyes. She realized how serious he was about Olivia. It was a difficult moment for her, but she knew she had to re strategize.
"I just want what's best for you, David. "If Olivia makes you happy, then I'll try to accept that."Barbara said pretentiously.
David felt a wave of relief.. It was a small step, but it was progress. He knew that building a bridge between his mother and Olivia would take time, but he was willing to put in the effort. What he didn't know was that his mother had other plans.
As the week drew to a close, David and Olivia finally got to see. They decided to have dinner at their favorite restaurant, a small Italian place in downtown Willow Creek. It was a much needed break from their hectic schedules.
When they saw each other, it was as if no time had passed. They embraced tightly,
"I spoke to my mom," David said, taking Olivia's hand. "She’s trying to be more understanding. It's a start."
Olivia smiled, squeezing his hand. "That's good to hear. I know it hasn't been easy for you."
"It hasn't," David admitted. "But being with you makes it all worth it."
They spent the evening lost in conversation, savoring each other's company. It was clear that their love had only grown stronger through the challenges they faced.
David and Olivia drove back home with renewed hope. They knew that the road ahead wouldn't always be easy, but they were committed to walking it together.
In the weeks that followed, they continued with their busy lives, but finding moments to be together.whenever they could. They would meet during lunch breaks,, or simply sit together in Olivia's studio in the evening after work while she painted.
Barbara obviously, made an effort to be more accepting of Olivia. She invited her over for family dinners and even attended one of Olivia's art exhibitions.Meanwhile she has been scheming on ways to disassociate them.
David and Olivia were more than ever in love with each other. They learned to balance their demanding careers with their personal lives, always making time for what mattered most.
Their vacation in Paris had been a turning point, a beautiful one that had strengthened their bond. As they looked to the future, they knew that their love story was just beginning.
