Chapter five
Dinner for two
It was a Saturday,David had planned this surpise dinner meticulously.
The polished brass knocker felt cool against his palm as he lifted it and let it fall. Three soft raps echoed through the hallway, and he held his breath.
The door creaked open, revealing Olivia framed in the soft light. Her hair was swept back with a silver bow anchoring it.She wore a simple stripeless evening gown that clung to her curves. The scent of jasmine lingered in the air, and David’s pulse quickened. How could someone be so beautiful?
“David,” she said, her voice a melody. “You’re early.”
He chuckled nervously. “I couldn’t wait any longer.” He extended the bouquet of roses toward her,. “Shall we?”
They walked hand in hand to the Italian restaurant near the Olivia's apartment.. The air was thick with the aroma of garlic and basil, and David’s stomach fluttered. He had rehearsed his lines, the way he would tell her about his dreams, about the future he envisioned, but now, with Olivia beside him, words eluded him.
The restaurant’s door chimed as they entered, and the maître d’ greeted them with a knowing smile. “Ah, Mr.Barnes,” he said. “Your usual table awaits.”
David led Olivia to a corner table lighted with candles. He pulled out her chair, and she sat, her eyes wide with curiosity. At his signal the violinist in the corner began to play a melody, while David ordered their favorite dishes.
As they sipped red wine, he stole glances at her,the curve of her lips, the way her eyes crinkled when she laughed. He had to say it now, before fear or doubt crept in.
“Olivia,” he began, his heart pounding. “I have been thinking.”
She tilted her head, waiting.
“About us,” he continued. He reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers. "My day begins with you and end with you.I want us to explore the possibility of spending our lifes together. What if we went on a holiday just to be sure?"
Olivia’s eyes widened. “Where?”
“Somewhere far away,” David replied. “Imagine just been alone together, with no distraction of family and work.”
Her breath caught. “But—”
“No buts,” David interrupted. “Life is too short for hesitation. Let’s create some memories together.”
