The bus was cruising along the road. For Rose, this journey felt like a dream, but a strange and cold one. Jack was sitting right next to her, yet he was behaving as if she weren't even there. He was staring out the window at the passing scenery, his eyes filled with a depth that Rose couldn't quite decipher.
Rose had her hands folded in her lap, feeling so uncomfortable that she felt her heart might jump out of her chest at any moment. After a long silence, she gathered the courage to whisper, "Jack? Thank you... for helping me in the library the other day."
Jack didn't say a word. He just gave a slight nod without taking his eyes off the window.
Rose’s heart sank. “Is this it?” she thought. “Will there always be these silent, unseen walls between us?”
From behind them, the sound of Lily and Will laughing made the silence between Rose and Jack feel even heavier. Thomas, sitting a few rows back, was glaring at them with visible annoyance.
Just then, a slow, romantic song started playing on the bus’s music system. Rose thought this might be the perfect moment to break the ice, but as she looked at Jack, she noticed a strange look of pain—or perhaps worry—on his face. He was silent, but he seemed to be in a completely different world.
Rose realized that there was a wall around Jack that was incredibly thick—and perhaps, she might never be able to break it down.
Rose kept trying to initiate a conversation, but every attempt hit the wall of Jack's silence. Eventually, the soft romantic music playing in the bus and the fatigue of the journey took over. Rose’s eyes grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep right there in her seat.
She stayed in a deep sleep for most of the trip. When the bus jolted to a sudden stop, Rose’s eyes snapped open. However, as soon as she opened them, she was stunned. Her head was resting on Jack’s shoulder!
She immediately snapped to attention, but as she looked up at Jack, her breath hitched. Jack wasn't asleep; he was silently watching her. The distance between them was so minimal that Rose could feel the warmth of his breath on her face. It was a deep, intense silence where words were entirely unnecessary.
For that one brief moment, the "unseen walls" between them seemed to vanish entirely.
Suddenly, Lily’s voice shattered the dream, "Come on, come on! Everyone, get off the bus!"
Lily and the others started getting up. Jack immediately looked away, turned his head, and stood up to leave. Rose scrambled to get up as well, her cheeks flushing a deep, embarrassed red. They both stepped off the bus without a word to each other, but that moment lingered between them like a profound, unspoken secret.
After getting off the bus, they reached a dense, forest-like area where they were supposed to camp for the night. Rose, Lily, and Will were walking ahead, Jack was a bit behind, and Thomas was at the very back, his eyes fixed on Rose.
The work of setting up camp began. As soon as Rose started setting up her tent, Thomas arrived immediately. "Rose, let me help you with that." Rose didn't like it at all; she just wanted to be alone or near Jack. Jack was a short distance away, setting up his camp with his friends, but his attention seemed to be elsewhere.
The evening deepened. Everyone gathered around a bonfire they had lit, sitting in a circle. Rose had hoped to sit next to Jack, but as soon as she sat down, Thomas took the spot beside her.
Jack was sitting directly across from the fire. Rose noticed that a classmate named Nancy had come and sat down in the empty spot next to him. Nancy looked quite confident and was repeatedly trying to engage Jack in conversation. Jack maintained his usual demeanor—silent and serious—but he wasn't pushing Nancy away either.
Rose was staring at the flames of the fire, but her real focus was on Jack and Nancy. Her efforts and her feelings... were they just going to stay buried behind a silent wall? Thomas’s chatter was buzzing in Rose’s ears, but she wasn't really listening. All she could feel was that the "unseen wall" around Jack was becoming deeper and stronger than ever.
Beef was frying on the fire, but a different kind of fire was burning inside Rose. She kept watching Jack and Nancy, and then it happened—Jack actually smiled at something Nancy said. That faint smile, which felt like a treasure to Rose, was now directed at someone else.
Rose couldn't take it anymore. She got up without a word and walked away into the darkness behind the tents. Tears welled up in her eyes. Suddenly, she heard footsteps; Thomas had followed her.
"What's wrong with you?" Thomas asked, his voice laced with an unsettling intent.
"Nothing, what could be wrong?" Rose said, keeping her eyes down.
"You just walked away from there. Something is definitely up," Thomas moved closer.
"Yeah, so what? Why are you here?" Rose snapped back.
Thomas changed his tone, "You look so beautiful today. And this outfit... uff, it's so hot."
Rose was stunned, "What are you saying?"
But Thomas didn't stop. He reached out and stroked her cheek. His other hand went to her waist, and he leaned in, bringing his lips close to hers.
Rose panicked and tried to pull back, "What are you doing? Let me go!"
Suddenly, a shadow emerged rapidly from the darkness. Before Thomas could even react, Jack was there. His face was twisted in a rage Rose had never seen before. Without a word of warning, Jack landed a powerful punch right on Thomas’s jaw.
Thomas crashed to the ground. Jack didn't give him a chance to get up; his eyes were blazing with fury. Rose stood there trembling, unable to believe that Jack, the "silent puzzle," could be this protective and intense over her.
