Chapter 1 :Chasing Shadows
The university campus was buzzing with the usual morning energy, but for Rose, the world only moved when Jack was in sight. She didn't just like him; she was drawn to his orbit. Her phone gallery was a secret archive of his i********: stories, and her browser history was a testament to her silent stalking. Rose was obsessed with everything about him. Whenever Jack’s football team had a match, Rose would be the first one in the stands. She would happily skip her most important lectures, braving the scorching sun or pouring rain, just to watch him run across the field. Yet, the moment Jack would glance toward the crowd, Rose would instantly turn away, adopting an air of cold indifference, as if he were a complete stranger. Her friends, Will and Lily, were tired of her charade. "Rose, seriously? You’re staring again," Lily whispered, nudging her. "Why do you act like you hate him when he looks at you? It’s exhausting to watch!" Rose kept her eyes glued to the field, her heart racing. "I don't know what you're talking about, Lily. And besides, liking someone isn't a crime, is it?" "It is when you act like a secret agent," Will added, rolling his eyes. "Just say hello!" But Rose never did. Later that day, the trio was settled in their lecture hall. The atmosphere was calm until the door creaked open. It was Jack. Rose’s breath hitched. He scanned the room and, to her utter shock, walked straight toward their row. He placed his bag on the desk right in front of Rose and sat down, his broad shoulders blocking her view of the professor. Rose froze. She couldn't help but stare at the back of his hoodie, tracing the way his hair fell against his collar. Lily noticed the intensity of Rose's gaze and leaned in, her voice a teasing whisper near Rose’s ear. "Look, Rose, the man you’ve been waiting for is finally right here." Before Rose could stop her, Lily gave her a playful, firm push from behind. Rose lurched forward unexpectedly, her hands and face slamming directly into the center of Jack’s back. The classroom seemed to fall silent. Jack stiffened, and slowly, he turned around. It was the first time in months of stalking that their eyes actually met in such proximity. Rose felt the air vanish from her lungs. Her face turned a deep shade of crimson, and she felt like she might faint. "So... sorry!" she stammered, her voice barely a whisper, her hands trembling as she pulled back as if burned. Jack didn’t smile, nor did he look annoyed. He just kept looking at her with a curious, intense gaze that made Rose’s heart hammer against her ribs like a trapped bird. The lecture hall felt suffocatingly silent after Rose’s accidental collision with Jack. The impact had sent a jolt of electricity through her, but Jack’s reaction was devastatingly calm. He hadn't erupted in anger, nor had he offered a polite smile. He simply adjusted his position, looked straight ahead at the professor, and acted as if Rose was nothing more than a ghost drifting in the wind. Rose’s heart was hammering against her ribs, her face burning with humiliation. She leaned closer to Lily, her voice a frantic, low-pitched tremor. "Lily, tell me you didn't just do that," Rose hissed, her eyes wide with panic. "Look at him! He didn't even blink. What must he be thinking of me? He probably thinks I’m some clumsy, obsessed freak who can't walk straight! I am so embarrassed, I could just disappear." Lily couldn't hold back a smirk, leaning into Rose's ear to whisper back. "Oh, please, drama queen. You’re overthinking this. Though, let's be honest—you are completely out of your mind when it comes to him. You’ve been living in his shadow for months, and now you’re finally close enough to touch him. Maybe this was the wake-up call you needed!" "Girls, seriously?" Will interrupted from the other side, not taking his eyes off his notebook. "Can you two keep it down? Some of us are actually trying to pay attention to the lecture, not your endless romantic saga. Just be quiet!" Lily and Rose exchanged a look, and despite the tension, they both stifled a giggle, their shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter. As soon as the lecture ended, the trio stood up, their eyes fixed on Jack’s back as he gathered his things and strode out of the hall. It became an unconscious game; Jack walked with a casual, confident pace, and Rose followed him like a satellite caught in his gravitational pull. Lily and Will trailed behind, watching the spectacle unfold. Rose was so deeply lost in her thoughts—dreaming of what it would be like if he just stopped and talked to her—that she didn't notice the path they were taking. Suddenly, Lily reached out and firmly grabbed Will’s hand, pulling him to a complete halt. "Wait," Lily whispered, clutching Will’s arm as they watched Rose continue walking in a daze. "Just look at her. She’s following him like she’s under a spell. This is too funny to watch.". Will laughed, shaking his head. "She’s completely gone. Let’s stay back and see how far she goes." Jack continued walking, turning into the hallway that led toward the men's restroom. Rose, eyes fixed on his broad shoulders, followed him right through the door without even looking at the sign. Jack stopped near the sinks and turned around to splash some water on his face, only to find the door swinging open again. His eyes locked with Rose’s. Rose froze. Her brain finally caught up with her surroundings. She realized she was in the boys' restroom, surrounded by other students who were now staring at her in confusion. Panic surged through her, and she immediately threw her hands over her eyes, shielding her sight in absolute terror. "Oh my God! I am so, so sorry! I didn't see... I didn't know!" she stammered, her voice cracking as she pivoted on her heels to flee. Jack stood there, droplets of water still on his forehead. He wasn't just indifferent anymore; he looked genuinely stunned, his brow furrowed in disbelief. He watched the girl—the one who was always watching him from afar—run away in utter shame. Why was she here? Why was she following him? Rose burst out of the room, her heart racing so fast she felt like she might collapse. She kept her hands over her face until she reached the safety of the corridor, where she found Lily and Will doubled over in laughter. "Stop it!" Rose groaned, her face flaming. "It wasn't funny! I literally just walked into the boys' restroom!" Lily wiped a tear of laughter from her eye, grabbing Rose’s arm. "Okay, fine, it was a disaster. But admit it, Rose! You’re so obsessed with him that you’d follow him into a fire—or a bathroom—without a second thought. You are absolutely, head-over-heels in love with him." Rose shook her head vigorously, though she couldn't hide the shy smile creeping onto her lips. "I am not! It was an accident, nothing more. Don't make a big deal out of it." But deep down, as she walked away, she knew Lily was right. She wasn't just following Jack; she was following her heart, and it was leading her into places she never expected to be.
