Thomas fled the scene, but after he was gone, a silence fell over the area that was heavier than any storm. Rose was trembling with fear, and Jack began walking toward her. Rose stepped back, but she hit the wall of a tent and a tree. She was trapped.
Jack didn't stop. He kept moving forward until he was right in front of Rose. Her heartbeats were pounding so loudly in her ears that she felt they might burst. Jack placed one hand on the wall, trapping Rose between him and the tent.
Jack brought his face so close that their lips were just a breath apart. The heat of Jack’s breath brushed against Rose’s lips. He locked his intense, blazing eyes onto hers and whispered in a low, firm voice, "If anyone tries to force themselves on you... you should punch them like that."
Jack leaned in even closer and added, "Not be afraid of them. I think... you understand that now."
Rose’s breath hitched. Her eyes were fixed solely on Jack’s face. She nodded slowly, as she had no words to say. Jack’s proximity and the intensity burning in his eyes pulled Rose into a world of her own.
The moment between Jack and Rose was so heavy with breath and silence that it felt as if time had frozen. But then, Jack pulled himself back with a sudden jerk. The familiar, detached expression returned to his face, as if nothing had happened at all.
"Come on," Jack said in a low, distant voice, "everyone must be waiting for us."
Rose remained standing there, her heart still pounding in her ears. She just nodded slightly. The two of them slowly walked back toward the bonfire circle.
When they arrived, the scene was entirely different. Thomas was sitting there, his cheek swollen with a visible bruise. He was spinning a false story to the rest of the group.
"You know guys," Thomas said, lying shamelessly, "my foot slipped in the dark and I fell; that's how I got this injury. I wish I had been more careful!"
Rose looked at Jack, who stood there completely indifferent, not even glancing at Thomas. Thomas’s eyes met Rose’s, and for a split second, there was anger and fear mixed in his gaze. He knew that if he told the truth—that Jack had punched him—he would only humiliate himself further.
Rose realized that the "silent wall" around Jack had become even thicker. He had saved her, stood so close to her, and now he was acting as if she were a total stranger. Rose found it impossible to process—did Jack save her because he felt something for her, or was it just another act of his "humanity"?
Back at the bonfire circle, the tension in the air was palpable. Everyone was settled in their spots, with Thomas still clutching his swollen cheek. Jack fixed a cold, intense stare on Thomas and said firmly, "Get up from there. Go sit next to Nancy."
Thomas was visibly shaken. The anger was still simmering in Jack's eyes, so he didn't dare argue. He got up immediately and moved to sit beside Nancy. Jack, without saying another word, took the spot Thomas had just vacated.
Everyone present, especially Lily and Will, was in shock. Rose’s heart was racing. She couldn't figure out why Jack was doing this. Was it just his sense of "humanity"? Was he sitting here simply to ensure she stayed away from Thomas so she wouldn't get hurt? Or was it... something more?
Jack didn't even look at Rose; he just stared into the flames. Rose was so close to him that she could smell his cologne, but her mind was a whirlwind of questions.
Soon, the food was served, and everyone enjoyed the beef fry. As the mood lightened, someone placed an empty bottle in the middle of the circle and suggested a game of "Truth or Dare." Rose felt a sliver of relief, hoping that maybe, just maybe, this game would finally reveal what was hidden behind Jack’s silence.
The bottle spun, and all eyes were glued to it, waiting to see who the first target would be.
The bottle spun and landed on Rose. Everyone started chanting her name. "Truth or Dare?" they asked.
"Truth," Rose replied softly.
Will saw the perfect opportunity and fired the shot, "Rose, is there someone you love?"
Rose hesitated, "What kind of question is that?"
Everyone chanted in unison, "Tell us, tell us!"
Rose took a deep breath. She looked at Jack, who was sitting there as still as a statue. Her voice trembled, "Maybe..."
"Tell the truth! The whole truth!" they urged.
Rose gathered her courage, looked straight into Jack’s eyes, and said, "Yes... I do love someone."
"Oooooooo!" the group erupted. Rose’s face turned bright red with shyness, and she immediately looked down.
The game continued. The bottle spun and landed on Will. Someone jokingly asked, "Will, have you ever slept with anyone?"
Will denied it immediately, "No, no!"
Everyone laughed and teased him, "Oh, so Will is still a virgin!"
But then, the bottle spun and landed on the person everyone had been waiting for—Jack.
Everyone started shouting, "Jack! Jack! Jack! Truth or Dare?"
Jack took a cold breath and said, "Dare."
"Oooooooo!" Everyone’s eyes lit up. One of the guys said with a mischievous grin, "The dare is... kiss someone!"
"Kiss her! Kiss her!" The chant echoed through the silent forest.
Jack stood up, his movements filled with an unspoken tension. He looked around the circle and said in a calm, magnetic voice, "Ok. Is there anyone who would like to kiss me?"
His voice carried such gravity that everyone held their breath. Rose’s heart felt like it was stuck in her throat. For a split second, she felt a surge of panic—would another girl volunteer? Would Jack choose someone else? Overwhelmed by jealousy and fear, she stood up before anyone else could react.
Several other girls had raised their hands, but Jack didn't look at any of them. His eyes were locked solely on Rose. He turned to face her, his gaze holding an intense passion that seemed to reach deep into her soul.
"Rose," Jack whispered.
The chanting of the crowd grew louder, echoing through the forest: "Kiss her! Kiss her!"
Jack slowly reached out, his hand sliding behind Rose’s neck, the coolness of his fingers brushing against her warm skin. With his other hand, he pulled her waist firmly, drawing her against his chest. Rose’s breath hitched; she was so close that she could feel the steady, rhythmic beating of Jack's heart against her own.
Rose closed her eyes, her heart pounding like a drum. Jack leaned down, and their lips met.
It was a long, deep, and emotional kiss. The bonfire flickered around them, but for Rose, time and the world had come to a standstill. The warmth of Jack’s lips melted away every fear she had ever felt. She stood there, captured in his arms, finding a sense of peace she had never known. In that moment, the "unseen walls" had crumbled away forever.
When Jack finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily. The old silence in Jack’s eyes was gone, replaced by a profound sense of confession. Rose’s face was flushed with shyness and love, but her heart was finally at peace.
The journey, the secrets, and the silence—everything had finally culminated in that one perfect moment.
