The next people to arrive were Maya and Maxine. I hugged Maya and felt her baby bump against my stomach. As I pulled back and smiled down at her belly, she asked, “Do you want to touch it?” Did I? Yeah, I kind of did. I’d wanted to when I’d seen her last night, but had chickened out of asking. Now, grateful for permission, I reached a tentative hand out and placed it over the fabric that covered the bump. “Oh, wow,” I gasped. I could feel the strong energy of the baby—so strong that I could almost taste it. The connection brought out a protective instinct that made me want to wrap Maya in bubble wrap and send her home. Somehow, I didn’t think she’d go for that, so I pulled back. “You’ve got a strong one in there,” I told her. “Tell me about it. She’s been doing backflips all morning.”
